Titans expected to release Henry (1 Viewer)

Colin,

White didn't look like he was in game shape all year, and his conduct/behavior didn't show me a guy with the lightbulb on. He also seemed like he had much less of an initial burst than he did @ USC, don't you think?

He _could_ put it all together, but unless he dedicates himself (which is in question), I just don't see it happening.

But I'm rooting for the guy.

The Titans cut running back Travis Henry today, steering clear of an $8.3 million roster bonus that was due on Monday. The team hopes that once Henry and his agent, Hadley Engelhard, size up the free agent market they’ll return to negotiate and they’ll find what the Titans are offering is more reasonable than they thought.
This seems to be the key point of the article, but people are ignoring it. I'd love to say that White will be the starter, but the Titans aren't saying that yet. They're saying that they're willing to play chicken with Henry and let him test the free agent waters instead of paying him $8.3 million + his salary this year. I agree with that. If Henry does sign somewhere else, I'd expect the Titans to bring in another back - and it almost certainly won't be Brown. If he doesn't get an offer he likes, he'll probably be back and starting/splitting duties with LenDale in 2007. Now would be a terrible time to try to acquire either player, because both are going to be at an all time high of trade value. Henry owners will want to wait to see if he signs in Denver, and White owners are hoping they have a new starter on an improving offense. So for now, we're just watching the NFL soap opera unfold. It's an interesting situation to keep an eye on, but nothing more.
 The $8.3 was the main reason Tenn let Henry walk, not confidence in White. Look for Tenn to sign a FA RB to start with White still learning the ropes. His rookie season was a waste, so this will be, in effect, his first year. Understudy-time.
Who could they sign that would start over him? The only available backs who are arguably better are Thomas Jones, Michael Turner, and Jamal Lewis. Lewis would seem like a suspect signing given his age and the fact that White is a comparable player. Turner and Jones would likely be too expensive. My guess is that they'll draft someone like Brandon Jackson or Darius Walker in the 4th round, but that White will be the opening day starter. As I've said before, I think he's better than all of the backs in this draft except Lynch and Peterson.
I wouldn't mind seeing A. Green bought in. We need a change of pace veteran guy. I could see a two headed monster until White"gets it". The other thing is that Henry is a two time drug offender and the next time he is gone for a year. I still do see a true 3rd down back being drafted in the 3rd or 4th rounds

Another guy who would be a very sneaky pick for Tennessee is Lorenzo Booker. I don't think he'll ever be a featured RB, but he should be a poor man's Reggie Bush and would offer a nice complement to White.

I went to one Titans' party at a Nightclubs this year and guess who was there...PacMan, Lendale and Travis Henry. They came together. Lendale is looking for respect and is still young. PacMan and Henry are not exactly the guys to hang out with

Alot of these words seem to be spoken from people how didn't see him play last year. When I saw him he did everything he was supposed to do. Ran hard, ran tough and was very nibble. I'd like to hear and these behavior issues thats everyone is talking about. Last I checked he wasn't in any night clubs. Only thing i heard was that he had a legitimate hamstring injury that prevented him from staying in shape. And I heard he wasn't the one at USC getting cars and houses. Kinda puzzling if you ask me. guess some people were meant to be disliked.

I was thinking the same thing or they could pick a guy like R. Taylor from Texas off the street since I doubt he gets drafted now to compliment him.

WOWOWOOWOW pacman is a horrible guy and LenDale must be just as horrible for being with him. Gotcha. They are Co- workers. sometimes people hang out with co-workers in order to make working a little easier.

Sure. He's never been too good at caring for his body - read this pre-draft scouting report where he discusses his fluctuating weight and eating habits:

http://usc.scout.com/2/503058.html

Now, a lot of guys can eat horribly and be fine, but White's body has shown to be a little more prone to picking up fat. But that didn't stop him from pigging out or even realizing that _maybe_ that wasn't such a good idea.

Then it turned out he had a torn hamstring, which he didn't reveal until after he skipped his pro day workouts:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft06/news/story?id=2407977

Again, not a big deal in a vacuum, but either White or his people really dropped the ball and let his rep take a huge hit before finally explaining why he wouldn't run. Again, White seemed utterly naive about why this would be a problem.

Then he spit on a teammate in practice:

http://www.titansradio.com/cgi-bin/blurb_v...lurb=news656370

That's generally considered one of the worst things you can do to another player, and doing it to a teammate is a particularly large red flag to me.

He never seemed like the same player during the season, either. I felt he was at least a half-step slower than his college performances, and it _really_ made me start to doubt him.

Now, we're hearing the same stuff you always hear about a high pick who underperformed -- that he's going to kick butt in the offseason conditioning program and now he totally understands what he needs to do to be successful in the league. This comes via stories like this:

http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ar.../701150346/1027

I hope he kicks major butt. I really do. But when a young guy shows signs of a lack of dedication, it's usually 50/50 at best as to whether he turns it around. White strikes me as a guy who is figuring out how to say the right things, but it'll be his actions that'll tell the real story.

Pacman's thuggery is pretty well publicized, but I don't recall Henry being a character problem. Maybe I missed something?

Hey, if Henry goes to DEN, I'll be just fine. If it's GB or OAK, then I'll be praying Thomas Jones also finds a better home...

Was he a 1/2 step slower, or everyone else around him faster???The quote from Jeff Fisher still resonates with me...."I'm going to give him the ####### rock."

LenDale is a competitor, always has been. He did everything that was asked of him last year once he was healthy. By the time he was ready Henry had already secured the job. He came in with some fire and ran well between the tackles. It's not the first time/nor the last that a highly touted rookie takes time to get going.

The biggest improvement White needs is with his pass protection and receiving.

Involvement with a 15 year old girl in Buffalo. And a failed drug test in Tennessee. http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/TEN/8895587

Could someone confirm whether it was the 4-game suspension variety, and whether that means a next violation is a year suspension?

I'd rather he not sign with Denver.

If memory serves, Henry is one hot test away from a year long suspension. Last time he failed a drug test he got 4 games.

how long does a player need to be clean before his record is wiped?IIRC, Jamal Lewis wasn't given a year suspension for his 3rd violation because he had been clean for a number of years since his 2nd one.

I more thing about a "co-worker"Jets | Jets probably won't be interested in Henry

Published Sun Mar 4 5:01:00 p.m. ET 2007

(KFFL) Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports the New York Jets will probably not pursue unrestricted free-agent RB Travis Henry (Titans) in free agency. Henry has some personal baggage, and head coach Eric Mangini and the Jets usually try to stay away from those players.

I would understand this and any team should keep his history in mind for the simple fact that he could be gone for a year if he fails another drug test. Henry will be a buyer beware.

John Clayton on ESPN radio just said Henry is set to visit GB ...
Not surprised here. It was either last year or the year before the Titans played Green Bay in the last pre-season game in GB. There was chatter then about the Packers being interested in Henry.
