Haley to Chiefs as HC?

The Kansas City Chiefs' long road to finding a head coach has just about come to a close.

FOXSports.com has learned that the Chiefs offered the position to Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley and he has accepted. They are now trying to work out terms of a contract agreement.

Haley interviewed for the position earlier this week and a Cardinals player at the Pro Bowl told FOXSports.com Haley was scheduled to arrive in Honolulu for the Pro Bowl Thursday as a guest of Cardinals wideout Larry Fitzgerald, but canceled at the last moment because of the Kansas City job.

"He's going to be a big loss for us," another Cards player told FOXSports.com.

A different Cardinals player said, "He was really liked in the locker room, because we felt like he was always trying to figure something out for us for Sundays. He never stopped."

Haley called the plays for the high-flying Cardinals offense that shocked the world by not only getting to the Super Bowl, but nearly winning it last Sunday.

Haley accepts offer to be Chiefs coach

By ADAM TEICHER

The Kansas City Star

The Chiefs have hired Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley as their new head coach, a source close to the situation told The Kansas City Star.

Details of Haley’s contract were unavailable. It was also unclear when the Chiefs would make the announcement. The Chiefs would not confirm Haley’s hiring.

While The Star learned this week that the Chiefs planned to speak with Haley, the other candidates they interviewed have not been publicly identified. A representative with the Fritz Pollard Alliance, an organization that promotes NFL teams providing equal opportunities to minority candidates, said the Chiefs complied with the league’s Rooney Rule, which requires a team to interview at least one minority candidate for its head coaching vacancy.

Haley began his coaching career in 1996 as an offensive assistant coach with the Jets. Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli and Haley worked together in New York from 1997 through 1999, Pioli as the director of pro personnel and Haley as the wide-receivers coach.

The two then went their separate ways. Pioli followed Bill Belichick to New England, where the Patriots won three Super Bowl championships.

Haley moved on to coach wide receivers for the Bears and the Cowboys before joining the Cardinals last year.

Arizona advanced to the first Super Bowl in franchise history this season mainly on the strength of Haley’s offense. Arizona finished third in the NFL in scoring, fourth in total offense and second in passing yardage. The Cardinals set a franchise record by scoring 427 points.

The Cardinals then advanced to the Super Bowl, where they lost to Pittsburgh, by scoring at least 30 points in all three of their NFC playoff games.

This is the first time that KC has hired a coach this young and with this little experience since the hired John Mackovic back in 1983, when they took him from Dallas.

I believe Tony G said he was waiting to see who the coach was to decide how much to push the issue on a trade.

How do those in the know think this will effect the situation?

Additionally, what effect will this have on LJ's future with the team?

Nice, the sooner Haley gets out of AZ, the better.
I admittedly haven't followed the Cardinals as closely as you, but set aside the fact that no coordinator will make perfect calls every game, is Haley so bad that you are that excited to see him leave? I mean the Cardinals did some serious damage on offense since he's been coordinator and set some records offensively in the playoffs. Is this just a bitter Superbowl hangover or do you think the next incarnation of Bill Walsh is waiting in the wings?I honestly would like to understand the hate here.

Aggressive offensive mind - greatNot going to the TE on the first, second and third read and actually liking the WRs - terribleNot that it really matters. If Pioli wants him gone, he's gone. If Pioli wants him around for the young QB, that's that.

Tony can certainly split out as the #3.Im positive that if Thigpen is still throwing the rock - he wont just discard Tony. Regardless of any coach.
Thiggy won't BE the QB if he doesn't read the defense instead of reading where Tony Gonzalez is.

What about Warner to the Chiefs along with Haley?
Doubt KC wants one or two-year rental at QB with a team whose average age is about 25. They need to sign some OL, and draft a franchise QB this season. It may not be Stafford or Sanchez, but whoever it is, Pioli @ Co. need to find him.

I'm happy for Chiefs fans. This was a team that was at the top of my mental list for needing change as it had steadily grown stagnant over the last 10-15 years. That's a crime given the faithful following they have from their fan base. They've cleaned house and seem to have put some able people in charge. I'm going to be interested to see how things develop from here.

I will say that it has been stagnant since 1999. Hiring Gunther Cunningham went Marty left was what sent the ship in the wrong direction. Then Carl just made it the "Friends of Carl" Chiefs hiring old friends Vermeil and Edwards.Up through 1999 I had no problem with Peterson. What is really bad is that Carl knew how to do just enough to keep a rabid fan base fired up each season....until everyone wised up in 2007-2008.

Tell me why you want the guy who gave the Cards the best offense since Coryell out? Because of a bad playcall in the Super Bowl? Really? :lmao:
The guy almost cost us the Philly game and did cost us the SuperBowl...I can't wait for him to leave....the players hate him and openly yell at him on the sidelines...guy has his head up his ###.

He is not the reason for AZ's offensive success...Fitz, Boldin and Warner are the reason...kind of like how Moss made Culpepper and Denny Green. He's overly conservative and makes bad decisions at critical times.

:goodposting: Any smart coach will adapt his style to play to his players strengths. Its ridiculous to think Gonzo will be ignored in that offense.

The players hate him so much that Boldin, Fitz and Warner were paying his and his family's way to Hawaiii with them? Interesting. I'm guessing you are new to following the Cards, and do so by only watching ESPN highlights.

LHUCKS, please  Denny Green made the playoffs 5 times in 6 years before Moss arrived.

Anybody else think Pendergast could follow Haley to Kansas City as the Defensive Coordinater?

I do think he pulled a rabbit out of his hat with the help of Romeo and Weis and kudos to him for doing that.

I won't be penciling them in as locks to return to the playoffs next year and think there is still some building and developing to be done, but that staff did an awesome job this year.

I was definitely thrown by the success of KC and Tampa this year.

Their schedule was also a reason ...
Chiefs had about the same schedule as SD. If the schedule is the reason the Chiefs are in the playoffs why isn't SD. The only games that were different were the Chiefs played Cleveland while SD played Cincy (advantage SD) and the Chiefs played Buffalo while SD played NE (huge advantage KC). Same with the Raiders. The Raiders got the Steelers and Dolphins instead of Cleve and Buffalo. Obviously, the Pitt game is tougher than Buffalo and Miami is tougher than Cleveland but why are the Raiders 3 games back of KC?I agree the Chiefs probably don't win as many games if they played the AFC East instead of the NFC WEst but everyone in the division played a similar schedule. KC still won the division and outplayed Oakland and SD who played about the same schedule.
