Todd Haley refuses to shake hands w/McDaniels (1 Viewer)

I wish he would have "LeGarrette Blounted" him instead of shaking his finger at him. Other than that I don't have a problem with it. I also think everyone's off base thinking it has to do with running up the score. Rumors have it that McDaniels was disrespecting the players throughout the game from the sidelines like he did in San Diego. Haley is just sticking up for his guys.
Why do I have feeling that these rumors were probably started on a Chiefs message board somewhere? :coffee:

This isn't pee wee football folks, it's the NFL.
Exactly. Both teams have 53 professionals on it. And coaches should act like adults after the game. Haley didn't stop trying to score and, in fact, outscored Denver in teh second half. Why should Denver stop trying?Haley comes across as a little girlie man here.
:coffee:Haley did act like a man. He didn't avoid McDaniels and go running to the locker room. That would of been the girlie man move. There's 2 basic ways Haley, like every coach, could of gone about the "post game handshake." He could of gone up to McD and shook his hand or he could of done what he did yesterday (or something similar). The former is more classy obviously, but both are acceptable in the world of pro sports. As long as the losing head coach runs out to the middle of the field to greet, point at, shout down, etc. he's being a man. Don't confuse manly with classy.

I am surprised that there has been no mention of Haley’s dementia riddled explanation after the game. He floated from one impulsive thought to the next and never connected any parts of his thoughts. Reading his quote, (assuming it is in full context) is like studying a man that has lost his mind, and is searching to find it. It was like he was thinking while he was talking, never pausing for air....and he was thinking to himself, “what would Belicheck say?”

Here's what Haley said, and good luck to you if you can decipher it:"That's a private time between head coaches that has become not so private, but the key I would say, probably the thing that you're asking about, is that I've been in this enough as an assistant coach, as a head coach now, to be in some of these games. And the important thing for me as a head coach is that our team continue to just play hard and play our hearts out and keep fighting until the end. "Sometimes, you see indicators on the other side of where that team thinks the game is. We've been on the other side of this and we've been on this side of it and we've been ... again, let's just keep it at that."Huh?
Huh? Exactly.

It was on local sports radio, but yeah, I see where you're going and it's the same difference. I do like that the AFC West divisional games are starting to have some of the old rivalry again though. Can't wait for December 5th in Arrowhead! Not to mention Jan 2 at Arrowhead against the Raiders for what could be a playoff spot for the winner!

He's been taking lessons on answering questions from the media from Sarah Palin.

Translation: I know I acted like a little spoiled baby so actually explaining why I had my wittle feelings hurt would make me sound even more lame.

So, if I get this correct, with Denver up 28-0, would Haley have skipped two extra points to preserve a 28-27 Denver win, for the sake of sportsmanship?

which is more embarrassing?1. getting your butt kicked2. the other team having pity on you and taking it easy?
Think of this in purely madden terms. What aggravates you more? A guy continuing to throw bombs or a guy taking a knee to run it out?

How about going out and stopping somebody? This isn't junior high, these guys are professionals and their crowd paid to see them play football, not take a knee for a half. KC should be embarrassed for putting on such a poor display. I would go out there and execute my offense every time, teams don't get much live fire practice these days. Damned if I'm going to lose that time and disappoint my fans because the other team didn't show up and can't pull it together enough to stop being humiliated.

Kansas City Star: Haley apologizes.

And Rotoworld's take on his apology:

"I do believe in doing what's right and that was not," Haley said. "I probably let the emotions of the situation get me too much. I apologize to the fans and to Denver and to Josh." Haley snubbed McDaniels because the Broncos were using max protection and still passing after jumping ahead 35-0 in the second quarter. In reality, the Broncos had clearly taken the pedal off the gas. McDaniels' team played soft coverage in the secondary, benched several starters, and was outscored 29-14 the rest of the way. McDaniels did nothing wrong.

Both from the BB tree of coaching. Fine additions.
How tf is Haley from the BB tree of coaching?
You're right. Got confused in my head with the Pioli connection to NE thinking Haley was from NE. My mistake.
Although I think Haley worked with BB under Parcells in NY, right?
Late 90's with the Jets but still not directly related to the BB tree. More the Parcells tree then.

I know it's an unpopular position on the forum, but I don't believe running up the score is good sportsmanship. Contrary to popular opinion, the offense's job is not to score as many points as possible. Their job is to help the team win the game. Sometimes that means scoring and sometimes it means running out the clock. I think running up the score serves no purpose and is a poor way to play the game.

That being said, Denver did NOT run up the score. They were running the ball when they can't run. They were trying to work the clock and keep the chains moving. Haley was wrong and it's good that he apologized today.

Was it the running up the score that got Haley fired up? I thought he was unhappy with something happening on the Broncos sidelines. Either way, if KC had shown up for the game the Broncos sideline would have had less time for the pinata.

Haley also worked under Parcells as a WR coach in Dallas.

Aside from being upset about the worst loss the Chiefs (5-4) have absorbed all year, Haley could have been upset at the brutal hit Denver linebacker Joe Mays(notes) put on tight end Tony Moeaki(notes) during an onside kick in the final minutes. Moeaki had to be helped off the field. There was speculation that Haley was upset at the way the Broncos were laughing on their sideline, and that he felt Denver was trying to drive up the score.

When the Chiefs routed the Broncos 44-24 on the same field in last year’s regular-season finale, Haley pulled most of his starters in the final minutes and declined to give running back Jamaal Charles(notes) an opportunity to break Adrian Peterson’s NFL rushing record. Charles was removed from the game needing just 37 yards to do it.

IMO Haley was upset from the instant-replay malfunction and the odd penalty on the on-side kick. That has to to with the refs, but he seemed to transfer that anger towards McD.

Dude seems unstable to me.

Just one week ago we saw the Bengals, down by 20 to the Steelers, ALMOST pull that game out. The best defense in the league almost lost a huge lead and the game.

Anyone who doesn't like getting a score run up should try playing better defense and ####.

most of you here have played sports at some point in your life . . .

I remembered some serious beatdowns as a player and a coach - I still shook hands. Why? it was our team's fault that WE stunk!!!

agreed, people like Haley focus more on the OTHER team's behavior rather than their own . . .

On a professional level, it was a completely classless move - but purely from the perspective of a sports fan, I'm glad it happened. They're both young teams and it will be good for them to have a division rivalry they feel a personal connection to. Should be the lead in story on game day for their next meeting.
