Polley signed with the Saints. To me this made alot of sense and was suprised it didn't happen sooner. Polley seemed to fill in adequately for Lewis, at least it seemed. (KFFL) ESPN.com's John Clayton reports the New Orleans Saints have signed free agent LB Tommy Polley (Ravens) to an undisclosed contract.

Does he start on the Saints? Seems he would, their LB core is incredibly weak.

He could start, but he'll have to beat out Simmons/Bockwoldt/Fujita. More likely, Polley will be veteran depth. The signing of Polley (and Jay Foreman) is almost certainly in response to the loss of James Allen. Even after the failed trade of Courtney Watson last month, the Saints seemed willing to go into training camp with Fincher, Watson and Allen as their backups. One thing is for certain - Courtney Watson will be getting another visit from the Turk before long.

When someone types that bolded sentence, I believe that you can call the LBing group a disaster area. It is definately not out of the question that Polley could beat any or all three of those guys. Anyway, still watching the situation because a starting LB on a mediocore to bad defense is often a good thing for IDP.

Jimmy Smith, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports it seems the only linebacker entrenched in his position is LB Scott Fujita on the right side as the coaching staff searches for continuity at one of the Saints' most unsettled positions. He lined up there at practice Friday, June 2.

The Saints LB corps has been a mess for years.Polley earning a starting gig is not out of the question at all, but he has been out there since March and the Saints didn't move on him until Allen was injured. They chose Simmons and Fujita and tried to acquire Eddie Moore. Not exactly a ringing endorsement there.Agreed, though, Simmons hasn't played in over 18 months and Fujita is nothing special. Also, that note on Fincher is very interesting. Suggests Simmons may be done.
