Tony Hunt (1 Viewer)

In the Eagles game last night, I found it interesting that Tony Hunt was getting all the goalline carries throughout the game (even when the first string was on the field). This may portend into something during the season. Could Westbrook see a drop in his TD totals this season? Hunt may be a sneaky pick at the end of drafts if this continues.

I think he'll end up with this role as well, although I don't expect a ton of TDs. In my opinion, a good goal line RB needs at least 2 of 3 traits:1) Explosive North-South running (gets through hole quickly)2) Run well in tight spaces3) Bowl defenders overI really like Hunt and am rooting for him as a PSU alum, but I think the only trait he has of those three is #2. He is a tough runner, but he isn't a high contact runner and he is pretty slow to the hole. He could change and improve on those other two traits, but I'm not sure if he'll be that successful as a goal line runner this season.

I'm not yelling at you for not searching, so don't take it that way.

But, I made a thread about this exact same subject a month or so back.

I believe it was Jason Wood that told me Westbrook had a very small number of tds from the goal line last year, and that even if Hunt toook goal l ine dutiest, it shouldn't affect Westbrook's TD's.

I agree with you and think that Westbrook's TD estimates should be lowered. I was at the game last night and it looked as if Andy Reid did not hold anything back from the playbook (maybe to make McNabb comfortable?). The fact that Hunt got the goalline carry with the first team speaks volumes in my opinion. He also got another one later in the game.

I did search and found nothing. I always do that before I post. Sorry if this is a Honda.

Westbrook didn't have a single rushing TD of 4 yards or less last year...my projections for Westbrook will remain the same. :)

3 carries from inside the 5:

1-3-CAR 3 (7:36) 29-T.Hunt right tackle for 3 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

2-1-CAR 1 (2:00) 14-A.Feeley pass incomplete short right to 29-T.Hunt (96-D.Ball). 3-1-CAR 1 (1:55) 29-T.Hunt right tackle for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN.

1 in the first QTR, the last 2 in the 2nd quarter. Those were the only 2 drives they were near the GL.

It appears like he is already stealing the GL carries.

The big one was the first one he got since it was with the first team.

As a Westbrook owner in a TD league, I try not let this possibility bother me. The first year I had Westbrook, he was splitting carries 3 ways with Buckhalter and (possibly) Dorsey Levens (can't remember.)

He still scored 9-10 TD's, and it's not like he was goal line material back then either.

Westbrook is one of the strangest plays in TD heavy leagues. On paper he should be a poor play, but he has a real knack for scoring. They could sign a healthy young Jerome Bettis and I'd still put him down for his usual 8-10 TD's.

Including the playoffs he had 10 rushing TDs last year.rushed for 12 yards TOUCHDOWN

rushed for 71 yards TOUCHDOWN

rushed for 8 yards TOUCHDOWN

rushed for 5 yards TOUCHDOWN

rushed for 6 yards TOUCHDOWN

rushed for 1 yards TOUCHDOWN

rushed for 28 yards TOUCHDOWN

rushed for 49 yards TOUCHDOWN

rushed for 1 yards TOUCHDOWN

rushed for 62 yards TOUCHDOWN

Also, 2 of his 4 receiving TDs were less than 10 yards. I'd say it's very possible that he'll lose some TDs this year.

Hunt is pretty much OK at everything but not great at any one thing. I likened him to Keith Byars before the draft, which is kind of ironic since the Eagles drafted him. I still think the Byars analogy holds, although Byars excelled at quite a few things (blocking, receiving, etc.).

He was a pretty good GL back at PSU, but that kind of got cancelled out by his fumbling problems. If he corrects the fumbling, he could be a good GL back, probably more likely to steal a few of McNabb's short passing TDs than Westbrooks rushing TDs.

Y'know what's funny? This time last year, everyone said "Westbrook will never play a whole season, he can't handle the banging of 20 carries a game." This year, he gets help with short yardage and has somebody to absorb some of the pounding and people are suddenly want to downgrade him like he's Warrick Dunn.

No doubt he might lose a couple touchdowns. But he'll probably also lose a couple 3rd and 2's from the 40 with 8 men in the box and a ninth lurking. And with a true short-yardage back, maybe the Eagles can actually sustain more drives and generate more offense ... for everyone.

Should'nt this take away goal line looks to the TE-WR's

I'd bump down LJ Smith if anything.

When Buckhalter was the goal line back Westbrook still got 9 td's-and that was when he was a part time player.

I think I remember that thread. IIRC people were saying that if Hunt eats into anyone's carries it will be Buckhalter's. I tend to agree with that. I don't think Westbrook's stats or opportunities are going to change much, and Hunt will primarily be competing with Buckhalter.

But it should up your projections for Hunt, no?
Tiki-Jacobs type split would probably be ideal here. With a pro bowl QB in McNabb, there's a point where people project too many TDs for the Eagles.I'd be much more comfy expecting Hunt to get alot of 4th and 1s +3rd and 1s than say 10 TDs.

Where does the arbitrary 4 yards come from? Didn't someone post that 4-5 of Westrbook's TDs came from within the 10? If that's the case and they are using Hunt in that situation, it's quite likely half of those could go to Hunt instead of Westbrook. Just having McNabb back should make Westbrook less impactful than last season.

Oops, just posted a new thread about Hunt as I missed this one.

Anyway,

John Clayton of PhiladelphiaEagles.com reports RB Tony Hunt is the team's top short-yardage and goal-line back.

Hunt's yardage has been unimpressive at best this preseason, but he did score two touchdowns last night. He could continue to steal goal-line carries all season.

I would be interested to know how many carries Westie had from inside the 5 last year.
Looks like 14 carries inside the 10, that's as far down as ESPN breaks it... 4 of those 14 were TDs. As LHucks pointed out, none of those 4 came from within the 4.However, Buckhalter really wasn't used as a GL back last season, having only 9 carries within the 10. The majority of his carries were toward the middle of the field between the 40s. And Buck's short yardage carries were really unsuccessful for the most part. With Hunt showing so far a propensity to score in short yardage situations, I have no doubts he will have a greater role than Buckhalter did last season. And that WILL cut into Westbrook's TDs.Westbrook only rushed for 7 TDs as it was, so it's not like he's a TD machine.

I have yet to even confirm that he dressed last week.... he was not on the inactive list, and I don't think he even saw the team on special teams if he was dressed.

Same boat I'm in. I drafted this guy and I don't even know if he is playing. I read this e-mail update and haven't heard another thing about him.
Did the Eagles have any goal line plays last week?

Hunt, Kolb and Justice dressed but did not play.Eagles inactives were: AJ Feeley (emergency QB), N. Graham, P. Togafau, v. Abiamiri, S. Young, P. McCoy, M. Jean-Gilles, L. Ramsey

The closest they had was at the 5, which isn't Hunt territory. They probably will give Hunt a shot on the goal line since neither Westbrook nor Buckhalter was very effective last year (4/13).1-6-GB 6 (15:00) 36-B.Westbrook up the middle to GB 5 for 1 yard (51-B.Poppinga, 50-A.Hawk).

2-5-GB 5 (14:22) 5-D.McNabb pass incomplete short left to 36-B.Westbrook.

3-5-GB 5 (14:18) 5-D.McNabb pass short right to 36-B.Westbrook pushed ob at GB 5 for no gain (56-N.Barnett).

ThanksI would think that 5< would be his territory though. I hope.

I drafted Hunt in the 16th round, hoping for a possible TD vulture who'd maybe a start when Westbrook inevitably mises a game. I noticed Buckhalter had a handful of carries & Hunt didn't see the field. He may get TDs later in the year, but it looks like he's stuck at #3 in Philly for a while.

I'm cutting Hunt for Sammy Morris this week.
