Tony Washington - 2nd Round Prospect goes undrafted (1 Viewer)

I heard this story earlier in April and felt the young man deserved to have the past be the past. I was surprised that he wasnt even drafted but even more surprised that he is being blackballed entirely from the NFL. What say you Shark Pool?

NFL Doesn't Give Washington A Chance

Throughout the NFL Draft, you undoubtedly heard the stories of those players that slipped due to falling under the broad scope of "character issues."

This year, the stories have become more magnified, thanks in part to the recent suspension of Ben Roethlisberger and a more stern disciplinarian in league commissioner Roger Goodell.

Dez Bryant's handling of his contact with Deion Sanders and his subsequent lax attitude around workouts resulted in him slipping from a potential top 10 pick to No. 24. Aaron Hernandez slipped a couple rounds due to reports of his marijuana use, though exactly how many tests he failed has been up for debate.

Offensive lineman Tony Washington runs during practice drills during the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine.

But, out of all those who were draft eligible this past weekend, no one has been labeled by NFL teams more "off limits" than Tony Washington, an offensive tackle from Abilene Christian, who some people had going as early as the late portion of the second round.

Washington wasn't picked in the second round. Or the third, fourth or fifth, for that matter. Not in the sixth or seventh rounds either.

And in the hours after the draft, when teams sign free agent contracts, or in some cases, just give guys a chance to try out, Washington's agent Vann McElroy didn't get a single call.

McElroy confirmed to CNBC.com when Washington was 16, he was convicted of having sex with his biological sister. He served two weeks of jail time and received five years of probation and was subsequently registered in Texas as a sex offender.

But that was seven years ago. And Washington's agent told CNBC.com that he had no indication that not a single team wouldn't call.

"I'm in complete shock," McElroy said. "I feel so bad for this kid. This is something that happened seven years ago and, probably because of the Roethlisberger situation, he hasn't been called."

"We spent hours of our time, providing letters, testimonials from people to tell this kid's story," McElroy said. "It isn't like he's some pervert hanging around in the bushes. He's a good kid who screwed up, who since then was accepted by the board and admitted to one of the most conservative colleges out there."

McElroy said that "maybe four teams" said they wouldn't draft Washington.

"Other than that, all I heard was, 'Maybe we can't take him early because of the publicity, but we'd consider him in the later rounds,'" he said.

McElroy, who played in the league for 11 years and has been an agent for 18 more, says that he's wondering if the league instructed teams that Washington was not to be called. When contacted by CNBC.com, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said that the league did not tell teams that Washington could not be contacted.

Said McElroy, "Someone should give this kid a chance."

This thread has nowhere to go but down.
Probably, I just thought it was ridiculous that this guy is being blackballed when we all know what kind of characters are in the NFL. Truly disappointing. Would the PR hit even be that bad?
Well, maybe the better question is:What's worse? Having consensual sex with your sister or non-consensual sex with a stranger?

I definitely wouldn't hire him to be a teacher or any sort of work where he is around young kids, but I don't think he is danger in the locker room. My guess is some team will signed him as an undrafted FA in a few weeks when there is less attention being paid to the NFL draft.

Please let this thread die.

It was bad enough when people would ask if their mother was a hoe. Doing your sister is just not acceptable. He needs to just go back to his sister and then go on the Springer show. Not in the NFL. There is no backstory that is remotely comfotable to air if he ever made a superbowl.

cringeworthy

next time I hear somebody say ties are like kissing your sister I'll have to look at that in a whole new light, I guess.

they really nail you as a sex offender for doing your sister at 16?

Really?

n May 2003, Washington was convicted of having sex with a relative that multiple NFL and college sources say was his 15-year old biological sister. The act was consensual, according to his college coaches and two NFL scouts, who spoke to him about the incident. The sister does not wish to speak publicly on the case, according to Washington's agent, who added that the siblings are now on good terms and talk often. Washington received five years probation and did not serve jail time.

He's an interesting case, for sure. The sex offender thing probably has a lot to do with it, but he's also a Division 2 prospect that couldn't make it into LSU after high school because of poor grades and testing. There's quite a few flaws with him. He seems to be very athletic and has prototypical size for a tackle, but the combination of questionable intelligence, no tape versus NFL quality players, and possible bad publicity makes him a tough sell for teams.

First time I'd heard about this. It's paranoid to think of it in terms of him being 'blackballed' at an NFL-level. I'm unsurprised no independent NFL team would want anything to do with the PR. You'd have to be a superstar to outrun sex with a younger sister. I'm not really following his agent's comments that "It isn't like he's some pervert hanging around in the bushes." Is hanging out in bushes significantly worse than having sex with a younger, underage sibling?

I'm just curious if it was consensual how did anyone find out and does the sister who 15 to his 16 also become a sex offender.

this part made me pause ... it is not as though they were not on good terms and talk often back then

sex w/your sister is fairly creepy, but 16 yo's are gettin' it on with 15 yo's all over the world.he's not a pedophile, just a southerner.

"Fairly creepy"? How would you compare it vs. a 16 Y.O. exposing himself in parks, or having sex with farm animals? Maybe incest is more accepted than I thought. Regardless, an NFL GM/Head Coach doesn't want to answer a single question anywhere in the neighborhood of incest. In some ways its almost worse than answering questions about other illegal conduct. He should feel lucky he could play college football, and come to terms that he's probably out of the running for high-publicity jobs.

I don't think I would --- I don't think about that stuff all that much.

Right. Why isn't she in jail too?
well, for one thing he's not in jail.secondly, do you know she didn't have to reg as a sex offender, or are you just assuming that?
I meant "wasn't". But yes, I am assuming she didn't have to.
so, just assume it happened the other way and you won't be outraged.problem solved.

Are there any other registered sex offenders in the NFL?

I don't think there are. No team wants to deal with that kind of publicity.

When you bone your underage sister you have to face the consequences.

i wouldn't have been too embarrassed to have nailed a few of my friends' sisters, even if they were mine.

The sex offender list is a joke. It's been twisted to mean things it was never inteded to mean. I know a guy who swears his buddy got put on it for soliciting an under-age prostitute...and she was a prostitute. The list is mis-used and abused.

This kid shouldn't be on it. As gross as it may be, an incident like that by a 16 y.o. kid shouldn't have to scar him for life.

 I really wonder if there isn't more to the story. One incident of misguided hormones by a couple of teenagers (kids!) isn't enough IMO.

A juvenile who has paid his debt to society. Still, very taboo.

How would this compare to Roman Polanski isolating a child, plying her with drugs, and then forcing the issue? I ask because to many he is an Icon.

I'm glad my favorite team has not taken on this burden.

I must say i am curious about the facts.

Can't really muster up any sympathy for this weirdo. Hope he got the most of his college education.
