Top 100 Heavy Metal and glam rock acts from the MTV era - it's still real to me (1 Viewer)

Wow!   It takes balls to put Dio at number 5 on this list.  Is that correct?   Hell if I know but it sure makes me happy.
Dio could have been #1 on this overall list, and I wouldn't have complained much.  Deserved?  Likely not, given the overall catalogues when you compare, but IMHO Dio was a better outfit than at least two of the bands that I assume are going to be top 3.  Their "hits" may have been bigger, but that doesn't always mean "better." <descends from soapbox>

Dio did have a top 3 metal voice and deserves to be highly regarded.   It is simply awesome.
He is #1 for this with me.  There is a very close #2 whose band has yet to be included on the list, but I'm certain they are in the offing, and then there is a pretty big gulf between them and the rest.  That #2 guy is the only other dude I think had the vocal chops/range to unseat The Gothic Elf for "best metal voice" overall.

:goodposting:

Dio was #1 when I started but I figured the voice of reason would prevail

All that early confusion and I missed Zebra :sadbanana:

#1 and 2 are very tight for me

#3 is a good spot for #3

#4 & #5 would be my personal 2 & 1, unless we're talking LA Guns

Hmmm....this is making me think your #4 is who I would have been agonizing between as my #1/#2 with Dio.

I was holding out hope they'd actually be your #1 over that OTHER band that I've already preemptively invited to ingest a bag of phalli.  If I'm right, then that makes me a sad panda 😿 (closest we've got to a panda).

I thought about Zebra but left them in the Triumph camp .. some sort of no-mans land .. double shout-out though ✊✊

I should have had Triumph in and maybe even Zebra, looking back I got hung up in more of a Manowar/Anvil side of those times as I was tossing a list together, but these are worthy Camaro rocking acts over some of the late era whatever-doodoo I posted early on.. I humbly confess!

Motion to add Zebra & Triumph into the Top 100 somewhere.

Manowar? Wasn’t their thing to wear furry loin cloths? Fighting, fighting the world is really the only song I remember from them.

Loudness ?!? This doesn’t even need additional comments.

Manowar I figured must have swords, somehow I picture them with swords.  Whoever does the next thread can fix this ####!

Punky Brewster’s real life brother (Meeno Peluce) as the delivery boy.
Hadn’t heard that name in 30-something years. Remember that kid ... who’s now 51 years old.
He had a bunch of roles in the early ‘80s, most notably in Voyagers (alongside Jon-Erik Hexum, who accidentally shot and killer himself on the set). Meeno also played Tanner Boyle in the terrible TV remake of Bad News Bears (with Corey Feldman, the hilarious brother Buddy from Just One Of The Guys, and the hot daughter from It’s Your Move).

Glad you mentioned them. Gives me a natural segue to this factoid:

TIL that 17-year-old Tracii Guns was a backup dancer in Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” video.

’80s couch potato, guilty as charged

This can be channeled into a thread apparently

Doesn’t get more metal than that.

Ozzy N.I.B. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dio N.I.B.

i get angry anytime it comes on my playlist and it’s the Dio Version

did you mean Bang Camaro

I think what I was drunkenly trying to say was.. 80's TV rankings thread!

Music threads will go out of vogue, this is basically the Appetite of music threads

All of our top 5 acts were around for pretty much the whole time period we're talking about

4. Iron Maiden

How many people knew Iron Maiden were from Maryland

Maryland's earliest known recorded appearance is on a map of Essex published by J. Oliver in 1696, where it is marked as 'Maryland Point'. The origin of the name is uncertain. One popular theory is that it originated with a rich local merchant who bought land and built in the area having returned from the American colony of Maryland (itself named for Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I). If true, then London's Maryland would be unusual example of a place in Britain named after an American location, rather than vice versa.
Oh, popular theories you got me again.
The things we learn when reading about Iron Maiden

The birthplace of Maiden, (Steve Harris and a bunch of whodats), mid-70's

I'm a fan of the early Di'Anno work.  I'm a fan of all of it really, albums 1-7, no gaps.

Phantom of the Opera

Purgatory

Di'Anno couldn't get off the horse and was replaced by Bruce Dickinson, who had been in Samson along with drummer Clive Burr.. who was promptly replaced by Nicko McBrain, who doesn't really look like most Nicko McBrains I've met.

So they went ahead and blew the doors off, from there

Run to the Hills
The Number of the Beast

Hallowed Be Thy Name - all time plinky for best metal song

Their ideas for videos were very.. British

The Trooper
Where Eagles Dare

Aces High LIVE  you have to have the speech

2 Minutes to Midnight
Rime THIS IS A STORY ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A BIRD ####S ON YA #35YearsSameJoke

If I had to say there was a slight drop in quality, it would be this album?
Wasted Years
Stranger in a Strange Land

But 7th Son is glorious, just soak it in
The Clairvoyant Donington
The Evil That Men Do

Throughout the 1980's, these cats were the undisputed Metal Band To Beat

I wasn't a fan of the next, No Prayer Left For The Dying.  Pretty much lost my full attention at that.  I'll still check em out.  New one Senjutsu is pretty good, better than the last couple I had heard.  They've never really stopped, some turmoil at singer when Bruce left for a while in the late 90's.  I don't like the Blaze Bayley Maiden stuff very much.. but I do like other Blaze Bayley stuff!

My favorite post-7th track -- The Wicker Man

Dusty old maiden playlist

New ####

This is the band I've always tried to turn people onto the most, if they showed a taste for it ;)    Most of the tasteful, unsuspecting ladies who've come along, wised up and left, have at least pretended to muster up a grudging appreciation!

I love Maiden, as did most everyone at the time. I saw them on their Number of the Beast tour  at Madison Square Garden with Priest (Screaming for Vengeance) and it's near the top of the greatest concerts I've ever seen. Saw them again for Powerslave at Radio City. But I still have to admit that I prefer Di'Anno's Maiden to Dickenson's Maiden. Always did. No doubt that Bruce is an excellent singer but still a notch below Dio and Halford to me. His straining vocals when he hit the high notes weren't my thing. I only made it to Somewhere in Time as a big fan. I bought Seventh Son but that was the last for me. By that time thrash had enveloped me. I'll take Priest over Maiden any time but no doubt they are one of the greatest metal acts of all time and would never argue with someone who prefers them.

Up The Irons! :headbang:

One thing that I have learned from these music threads is how much of a blindspot I have with Priest.   0 clue why, but I never listened to them at all, even in heavy MS/HS metal years (judging by your concert going, I think a difference in age might have a little to do with it).   I THINK I owned Painkiller, but even that I didn't listen to much of.     Usually these countdowns and drafts will get me to dig into a band's discography, and it's probably long overdue I dig into more Priest.

Maiden was my first true metal loves and still one of my favorite bands.    Somewhere In Time was out when I was getting into drumming in band and the like (I was 11).  I remember going to a fellow drummer's house to practice something, and her older brother had posters up and was listening to some Maiden and I was hooked.

If it was strictly about who's objectively "better" I wouldn't even be comfortable participating in a thread like that

I saw Di'Anno's Battlezone at L'Amour East in Queens, I guess like 1986. He was pretty hammered and didn't finish his set. Smashed the mic stand to the ground and walked off.

Iron Maiden is #1 for me - huge fan. Have probably seen them more than any other band.

Dickenson is the only voice that can rival Dio.

Too many albums and songs to list so I’ll just throw this one out there . .

Black Bart Blues

Looking forward to seeing them again 10/19 @ UBS arena.

Up the Irons !!!

I do think DiAnno's voice has a little more character, and as with most bands love the earlier gritty sound

speaking of gritty, the NHL all star skills challenge in Vegas was some of the worst television I've ever sat and gotten drunk to

Damn - thought Maiden would be #1. Would have been my personal top choice, but they’re all titans at this stage.

ETA: and I don’t think there is a better metal album ever than Number.

Yeah, I was already a big Priest fan before Screaming came out but that album really put them over the top and into the mainstream. Sad Wings is one of my favorite albums ever. They fit right in with Sabbath, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, etc at the time but brought such an original vibe to metal that those others didn't have. It was almost classical in tone. Victim of Changes or Island of Domination were like nothing I ever heard before. It may sound a bit dated now but was completely original then. They changed quite a bit with Screaming but still amazing.

80s material, desert island, NOOOOO QUESTION I'm taking Maiden.  Maiden is my favorite old school metal band (strictly personally my favorit-er bands are Clutch and Local H) and my favorite 80s band but I think I can justify why I have each of the top 3 ranked higher in terms of greatness here in the good ol USA.. but we have a few days to discuss !
