Top 20 regular season QB's - all time (1 Viewer)

Any ranking that doesn't have Fran Tarkington in the top 20 is flawed. This idea of counting any scores by the offense is just plain wrong. And this system ignores the quality of the players surrounding the QB. It's an interesting experiment, but it fails.

I like your scientific answer. You start from the postulate that Fran Tarkington is a top twenty QB, and then build your case. After all, it took Bertrand Russell around 547 pages to prove that 2+2=4.

Shouldn't turnovers, particularly interceptions, be considered when measuring the top QBs? Turnovers usually lead to an increase in opponent's points, and would that not be a negative for the QB?

Maybe. I could also say that not all turnovers are equal. If a QB get's picked off on a hail-mary pass at the end of the half, is that really a big deal? What about throwing a pick on 3rd down, deep out route, where if it were incomplete, the O would be punting anyways? compare these to red-zone turnovers or pick-sixes, which are absolutely devastating.I'd be curious to know if offensive turnovers correlate better with offensive scoring or defensive points allowed.

I would think red zone turnovers are obviously damaging to points for, but I doubt they have a huge affect on points against...unless the turnover is returned pretty far.

Interesting study with a lot of issues like any of these trying to look at GOAT or HOF caliber players. I know you are looking across eras but that inherently causes a few issues, like the turnover question being brought up. Go back and look at the int totals for the "HOF" QBs from before the mid 80's. Ints were not considered the death knell they are now and were more acceptable. Close to a 1:1 TD to Int ratio was not uncommon for a top QB.
