Top 5 Reasons why Football should be an Olympic sport (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
1) The best athletes in the world come to play in the NFL because of the glamor, prestige, respect and wealth that being a NFL player brings. The talent pool that the NFL has is the biggest of any sport in quantity and quality and the Olympics is missing out on great athleticism being displayed.

2) The Olympics needs some star power, it got it with basketball and NBA players, but it would be even better for the Olympics if it has world famous athletes like Payton Manning and Reggie Bush participating.

3) Adds some macho appeal for the average red-blooded male. Olympics have too many "girl" sports like volleyball, gymnastics...etc.

4) If that irrelevant handball game is in the Olympics, football should be. Who cares about handball?

5) Lots of countries play football, so that's not an excuse. Currently, more than 50 associations in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Oceania are organized within IFAF (International Federation of American Football), representing 23 million athletes world wide.

I don't know if you're serious so I don't know hot to respond.

Edit to add: ... in case you are serious

To qualify as an Olympic sport, an activity must be "widely practiced by men in at least 75 countries and on four continents, and by women in at least 40 countries and on three continents," according to Olympics officials.

I'm pretty sure he is serious and I still don't know how to respond.
Choose your own adventure style...1. "Football is an Olympic sport, American football is not" - turn to page 22. "You're on crack rock" - turn to page 433. "nuh uh" - turn to page 234. "The best athletes in the world are NOT in the NFL; Star power - seriously? Macho/girly? WTF? I care about handball!" - Turn to page 54

Is the original poster serious? How many international players actually play in the NFL? The USA would win their games like 300-0.

Top 5 Reasons why Football should NOT be an Olympic sport

1. John Madden

2. "watch his feet"

3. 18 penalties

4. 6 turnovers

5. Tony Siragusa

Well, it would lead to another event during the U.S. azerbaijan games: The paramedilympics.

23 million athletes world wide? Hmmm. And I'll bet that 22.9 million of them are in the United States.
Nope, only about 5.3 million football players are in America. The 24.6 million are worldwide, we just dominate because Americans are bigger, stronger, faster, tougher than non-Americans in sports. There will be plenty of competition, yes we will destroy ever country just like we would destroy them in war with our power and brute force. But there will still be competition because they whole world wants to be good in the sport that matters to the most important country in the world and eventually they may reach the level of basketball they reached where they can at least challenge us even if we dominate them whenever we want.

Serious question. How old are you?

Not poking fun, not making a joke. I'm just curious.

Whats to elaborate? Foreigners don't have the physical and mental attributes needed for the NFL, the best athletes in other countries can't hang with out athletes in the NFL because they are bigger, stronger, tougher, faster. If foreigners could be NFL players, they would be because of all the money, worldwide fame and glamor and women. But the reality is that foreigners are simply not good enough to go up against Brian Urlacher or Ray Lewis because their mascunline power is way to great for some eurosmurf.

One reason it shouldn't: We're the only ones who play. Kinda defeats the purpose of making it an Olympic sport, huh?

"Football" (soccer) players have way more money, worldwide fame, glamour and women than American football players.

Ok jerkoff, I'll bite. Watch, actually no, play a game of Australian Rules football and tell me that. As brilliant as Ray Lewis is as a linebacker in the NFL, he wouldn't last ten minutes in an Aussie Rules game. Sure, some guys are bigger and some are stronger, but none have the overall package and endurance to be able to last 100 minutes on the field. As for money, glamour & women - err, I think guys like Christiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi & Ronaldinho might be just receive a smidge more of all. Trust me fella, save for a few of us, the rest of the world don't really care too much about NFL. More people actually watch cricket.

A person gears their body to fit the sport they are playing. Enough, no need to wast time typing for this one.I think the Mods should do a courtesy and out this alias that goes by tatamaster. Seriously. This poster is in the realm of the anti-Obama posters that post a thread and never return to reply to anything. Reminds me of a few FFT posters that would come here and cause trouble. Maybe tata is a FFT doing just that.

PLease, tell me what could a soccer player possibly do to stop Ray Lewis from dominating soccer when Ray Lewis is bigger, faster and tougher than any soccer player that has ever existed? The sad reality is that the best athletes in the world come to the NFL because of the money, not much money in soccer and even those few who do get money playing in the world cup simply are much much less athletic than any NFL players, just compare their size. The average soccer player is what 5'11, 170lb? The average NFL player is 6'3 250lb. There's no comparison, the NFL player would simply dominate because nobody could get the ball of him and he'd kick harder than any soccer player. And people outside America care about football just like they care about our movies and our music and our culture in general. America is the #1 country and what we do is seen as glamorous and cool by the rest of the world, so is our football. They may not understand it because they are used to simplistic, childish sports like soccer, but they all understand a big hit and watch the NFL because its exciting, while soccer is more of a traditional, ethnic-tie type of sport just like cricket. Nobody finds soccer exciting, its just that foreigners have ethnic ties to their countries soccer team, they'd much rather watch the NFL and the fact that both england NFL games sold out proves that.

I agree personally that soccer is is a stupid sport, but your over generalizations are staggering. Have you ever seen some of these fans at soccer games played in Europe? Talk about fanatical. I would fear for my life at certain spots in the stadium at soccer matches played outside the US.

Let's do it.

I can't wait to get killed in the Canada-U.S.A Gold Medal Game by a score of 160-6 (all two pointers by US).

This is why people all over the world hate us Americans. Your posts are poorly thought out and waaaaaaaaay off base to start with, but your tone is brutish and crude.American football is terrible as a pure sport. Look at the lineman. Great hulks of men who would be considered obese by virtually every known measurement for health. They may be stronger, but they are NOT faster and their endurance is a joke compared to a world class football soccer (since you're obviously VERY misinformed) player. Would you seriously rather have your kid grow into a 340 lb. O-lineman with serious heart problems by 50 or a sleek, quick 210 lb. world class soccer player? Sign me up for world cup tickets! (Think that lineman would crush the soccer player? I doubt it...he'd NEVER catch him.)

Football is the perfect American sport because it's one of the few team sports where a fat kid can do well, and Americans are among the fattest people in the world. There...I said it. I'm fat too, and proud to be an American, but I'm not going to delude myself about it.

I'm not knocking American football...I love the game! I think soccer pales in comparison as a spectator sport. But you're still not only wrong, but embarassing to your Country.

WOW are you stupid (since that would be rude and possibly get me a timeout) obtuse and blind. The average world cup soccer player would run circles around Ray Lewis. There's a heck of a lot more finesse in controlling a soccer ball then in grabbing and mauling a man trying to run past you. Lewis would be red-carded and tossed within the first 3 minutes of a soccer match. (Do you know what a red-card is? Somehow, I doubt it)

1) The best athletes in the world come to play in the NFL because of the glamor, prestige, respect and wealth that being a NFL player brings. The talent pool that the NFL has is the biggest of any sport in quantity and quality and the Olympics is missing out on great athleticism being displayed.2) The Olympics needs some star power, it got it with basketball and NBA players, but it would be even better for the Olympics if it has world famous athletes like Payton Manning and Reggie Bush participating.3) Adds some macho appeal for the average red-blooded male. Olympics have too many "girl" sports like volleyball, gymnastics...etc.4) If that irrelevant handball game is in the Olympics, football should be. Who cares about handball? 5) Lots of countries play football, so that's not an excuse. Currently, more than 50 associations in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Oceania are organized within IFAF (International Federation of American Football), representing 23 million athletes world wide.
They have strict drug testing in the Olympics, most of the NFL would fail.

"PLease, tell me what could a soccer player possibly do to stop Ray Lewis from dominating soccer (see red cards, blowing by him and making him look silly, see Ray being called for handballs when his football instincts take over  , etc) when Ray Lewis is bigger (detriment to playing soccer in most cases), faster (not even close) and tougher (by what standards?) than any soccer player that has ever existed? (name us 10 pro soccer players off the top of your head)"

Can someone please send the last 2 minutes of my life back to me...I completely wasted it in here.

Ignorance is bliss

Nope, only about 5.3 million football players are in America. The 24.6 million are worldwide, we just dominate because Americans are bigger, stronger, faster, tougher than non-Americans in sports. There will be plenty of competition, yes we will destroy ever country just like we would destroy them in war with our power and brute force. But there will still be competition because they whole world wants to be good in the sport that matters to the most important country in the world and eventually they may reach the level of basketball they reached where they can at least challenge us even if we dominate them whenever we want.

You pretty much nailed one of the things I love about the game, it takes a more diverse team. Your elite WR will not be able to play DT, your LBs probably won't be able to play corner, it's the rare athlete that can play QB and another position and almost no elite QB would make a team at another position. OTOH, most elite forwards could play defense in futbol, an elite C could probably play the other positions in basketball, although maybe not well.

Well played...
;) Hilarious thread. Some thoughts for anyone taking the OP seriously:1) Yeah -- the NFL's biggest stars will be lining up to play in the Olympics. Kinda like the Pro Bowl.2) World's best athletes play in the NFL because of money? Did you think pro soccer players are eating out of garbage cans or something?3) And if you're a young elite American athlete, and you're thinking maximum $$$ ... the NFL takes a decided backseat to MLB and the NBA. The latter feature guaranteed contracts, much less risk of crippling injury, and a longer career.4) NFL guys get women? Of course. But do you think Ronaldinho and Beckham are spending their Saturday nights playing Halo?

No one is this dense

Ray Lewis could use all of his speed and strength for 90 minutes in a soccer game, and never touch the ball! In fact my local bush league soccer team, could face the SB champs in a soccer match and beat them easily.

I was explaining the game to a mate while we watched the Cards/Panthers game the other day and while he was amazed at the concept of three different teams within each team having to take the field at different occasions throughout the game (and bored by the lack of continuity), he came to this conclusion: "So essentially the game was invented by teachers so that all kids can be included; the fat ones, the tall ones, the strong ones, the skinny ones and the fast ones".I've been watching the game for 20+ years over here and while his statement isn't entirely true, I've never heard it put so well.

I'm not familiar with this Payton Manning fellow.
peyton manning, 3rd most famous athletes in the world after tiger woods and micheal jordan
Oh PEYTON Manning....I see...since he is so famous I would assume you could spell his name right.

I dont agree with what he says and esp how he says it. Hes going to wrong way about it. But there are some points in it. Yes, world class soccer players can outlast a football player, but i long distance runner can outlast a soccer player. Are they better athletes?? who knows. If you had to ask me, wrestlers, swimmers, gymnists, decatheletes are head and shoulders above them both. But in comparison of the 2 sports football is more diverse and comlex than soccer. If you were to hold a decathelon of events that contained smarts, strength, speed, endurance etc and got to chose a different athlete for each event there is no way soccer players would compete. YES they have more endurance...maybe better eye to foot coordination, and then what? But the fact is that it doesnt matter whos more athletic cause it all just boils down to what sport is more enjoying and i think that goes to football. Yes soccer is bigger but its been played for how many years now?? Football is fairly new in sports, its not as big of a tradition like soccer or even cricket. But just because cricket is a tradition and been around, its silly to say its a more enjoyable sport. I dont think football is world wide enough to be in the olympics yet but i can see his point of wanting something more enjoyable to watch.

You make some nice points, but your premise doesn't work out well for 80-90% of football players. Most lineman are far too slow and not agile enough to compete as you suggest. The WR/DB types are generally built much like soccer players in general. Some LB's, RB's and the ilk might fit your premise. But that's not really the point. American football is a very complicated, unique sport. Probably the most complicated (successful) sport in the world, with the most unique physical profiles (among ALL sports) being able to be successful. As much as I love the NFL, football would make a terrible Olympic sport. It's worldwide appeal and popularity is just too small.Do y'all realize they just elimanted girls softball from the Olympics because it hasn't caught on well enough in other parts of the world? And that girls softball is still far more popular world wide then American football?

The actual premise was that you could use a different player for each event, so the events that needed strength you use a lineman, speed you use a wr, intelligence you use a QB, etc. Just to show how diverse of athletes there are in football. And I have to disagree that its not big enough world wide because Id be willing to bet that the top selling jerseys worldwide probably belong to the NFL. But I think what you mean is that its isnt played enought world wide and i think thats because I dont think most cultures are diverse enough to create a whole team. Some cultures are smaller in size and couldnt compete with the size of the game and some are bigger and couldnt compete with the speed. I think thats what makes football Americas game because you have such a diverse group of people that can play and compete. As much as i think that football is the greatest sport there is with the most diverse set of athletes I just dont think it can ever spread and be competetive world wide.

XDespite what you may believe, Manchester United do not play in the NFL.

Try again guy.
You show me a list of the top 10 selling jerseys and which player from Manchester is in the top ten. And if by chance there is one jersey that sells into the top ten im still pretty sure the majority would be NFL.

You're the idiot making such a stupid assumption, you show me. For starters, go to Google and type in "perspective".

I said probably would, meaning i dont know for fact but I would think they were. You said I was wrong, as if you had facts, not that you think im wrong but as if you knew, so i say, back it up.
