Had mine done nearly 20 years ago. I actually had them do an epidural rather than general anesthesia, so I was more or less awake during the whole thing. They kept a screen between me and what they were doing, and I made the mistake of asking them how it was going at one point. Let me know if you want to hear the rest of the story. :X
I was in a solid cast for six weeks. That wasn't so bad, other than the itching (get a coat hanger). Expect to puke at first - the pain wasn't that bad after the first day, but those pills were awful; I quit them right away.
Rehab wasn't bad - I had a gym available at work, so after the doctor-prescribed sessions were complete, I started working it out on my own. I recommend keeping a chart of how much weight you're able to handle. That way you can see progress, which is encouraging. Mine was the right knee as well, and within a couple months it had caught up and passed the left.
Today, I trust the right much more than the left, and live in fear that the other one will go at any time (the first one gave out just walking across the living room - years of abuse finally added up).
Not sure what the procedure is these days, but on mine all they did was stretch the tendon back out and staple it to the kneecap. You only notice it when you're trying to put your shoes on - the right doesn't have as much flexibility as the left.
Leaves a helluva scar - good conversation piece.
Best of luck.
