The wife got me a used one for Christmas a few years ago and I have been collecting a little bit here and there. I’m really only into the Christmas stuff to put below the tree for now. They make a single Christmas themed box car every year for Christmas so I have each of the corresponding years for our kids and after four years of searching I picked this 1977 seasons greetings (Star Wars)  up yesterday.  Like it seems for everything in my life, the item I want tends to be the most expensive and hardest one to find!

I’m am thinking about getting a large scale model for the new house. (I want a train that goes from the kitchen to the family room to send food/drinks)

Anybody else have any interest or collections?

We aren't deep into it at this point, but my 6 and 4 year old boys are into model trains and we got them a Pennsylvania Railroad set; O-Gauge for Christmas 2 years ago.  We (and my parents) have added to it via village pieces or additional cars.  They also have the Lionel Fast Track Polar Express and North Pole Central.  I think eventually they will want to build a real layout.  They love watching stuff on YouTube and Amazon Prime (I Love Toy Trains).

I have a 5 year old that is pretty obsessed with trains.  We got him the Lionel Polar Express for Christmas, but that is first Lionel.  He has a fairly extensive collection of the wooden Thomas & Friends trains, tracks, and accessories.

@Don Quixote& @Leeroy Jenkins

They also make different scents for the engines that blow real smoke.

Sadly, I broke my engine that smoked but it was pretty cool watching it choo choo around the tree and the smoke was “Christmas scented”.

My kids loved it

We legit have probably close to $10,000 worth of the old trains in my grandfather's attic

My dad got them appraised like 5 years ago and somebody offered him 7,500 but he just didn't want to sell then

Some of these I think are like 60 years old

I have a Lionel Wabash Cannonball from around 1972 up in my rafters, right next to my Atari 2600.  Not worth much, but just don't seem to want to sell them.

Not into this yet but just turned 50 this year and me thinks this will be what I do in retirement in 5-10 years (hopefully).

It's pretty fun. Really harkens back to the days when "toys" were durable.

Thats the beauty of these, you don't have to have a really expensive train to run. In fact, 80% of them are really inexpensive so it's easy to get carried away.

My daughter used to enjoy them so I had a couple old n- and z- scale tracks set up for a couple years in our bonus room.    She's a teenager now so they've been boxed up an relegated to the garage.  I'll probably give them to a niece or nephew in a year or two.

Yeah slowly reading about these.  Probably a few years out before I get serious but looks like a fun relaxing hobby to do, especially in the cold winter months.  There used to be a huge model train show near my house but has been shut down the past couple of years due to the pandemic.  I hope that starts up again so I can check it out and get pushed a certain direction.

Just graduated to G scale. These are much larger and more detailed. They also have the ability to run outdoors.

With the added abilities the price is much higher. I’m in for over $300 and all I have is a 6’ circle of brass track and a working train. No power source yet.

These are super dope. After I figure everything out for the Christmas tree train i plan on adding one to the wife’s garden. I can run her drinks from the bar down to the garden !
