Trading Ethic Question (1 Viewer)

14 year Dynasty League, we got a new owner this year after the Super Bowl. He inherited a crappy team with the #1 pick and has done an admirable job churning the roster. After our rookie draft, I offered him Martavis Bryant for his Josh Rosen. He declined. Seemed even to me but that's not the debate.

Now I mentioned he inherited a crappy team with the exception of Leveon and now Saquon. Arguably his 2nd best WR was Marqise Lee who just tore his ACL. So, needing WR addressed, on Thursday he offered me the deal I originally offered, Josh Rosen for Martavis. Hearing the luke warm reports about Martavis out of camp, I was interested for sure, but rarely ever react immediately to a trade offer.

So, after a very busy night at work on Saturday, on my drive home I decided I would accept the deal and did when I got home then fell asleep. I woke up the next morning to see that the commissioner had processed the trade and I was now the indifferent new owner of Josh Rosen. About an hour later I start doing some reading and realize that at some point on Saturday, Martavis had been released and is quite possibly looking at a long suspension.

Now I have not heard anything from the new Martavis owner, nor can I tell if he is aware of what has happened. I let our Commissioner know what I had learned about Martavis after I read the story. My first instinct was to say, look if this guy puts up a stink about a trade being processed after this news broke, maybe we should just reverse it. I don't want this dude that only one other person in the league knows to have a bad taste in his mouth. But as time has passed I am wondering what my true responsibility here is. I know that if i was in his shoes and learned that a player  I had sent an offer for was just cut, it would be my responsibility to retract that offer and would do so as soon as I learned the news. If this deal was consummated on Thursday when he offered it to me, we wouldn't be having this conversation, but since the timing of the cut and the acceptance is somewhat questionable, we are.

So I am putting this out there to hear what you all have to say. Please share your opinions and I will tag the commissioner as well.

Thank you!

IMO, You are good to go...buyer beware is definitely applicable in FF.  I understand your concern about not getting the new owner disgruntled but that is not on you.

You don't have any responsibility here, I think.  As a long-time commissioner, though, if a trade offer is made, the status of a player involved in the trade changes substantially, and then the trade offer is accepted - I reverse the trade and give the owners an opportunity to reevaluate.  Fantasy football isn't meant to be a game of gotcha where whoever has the fastest trigger finger wins.  We all have lives here, no one should be punished for failing to retract an offer immediately upon breaking news.  In my league if a trade is accepted under circumstances that are obviously different than when it was proposed, it doesn't go through unless both owners re-establish that they still want to do the deal.

Trade should be reversed. Whether you saw the news or not, the owner would not have made the offer under the existing circumstances. I think its bush league for your league to let that stand. People can't stay glued to their fantasy football teams 24/7. Thus, its very easy for the owner to miss the Martavis news.

You've done nothing wrong and everything right, now act upon what you, deep down, know is the right thing to do and reverse the trade out of sportsmanship.

You didn’t do anything wrong.  You can walk away with no regrets or second thoughts.  However, as a gesture of goodwill and knowing he ended up on the raw end of this, plus knowing that he is new, maybe you could offer up a player that you consider fairly expendable as a substitute for Bryant - run it past the commish first, of course.  It may serve you well in future dealings and it will help take the sting out of it for them (they may even refuse the offer, but at least it would be out there).

If you want to be nice to the newbie go ahead and reverse it but do it for being a good guy and not because you are obligated to do so. It's not like the news of Bryant facing a suspension wasn't out there. It has been known for a month or so that he was facing a suspension.

potentially, but once they didn't suspend him in July, most people thought it was just a scare

I do realize in the grand scheme of things this is a pretty minimal trade involving backups at best also. This won’t bury either one of our teams.

I get your point but Martavis is not new news...suspension talk has been buzzing for awhile so for this owner to not understand this risk is not a reason to reverse.  If the OP wants to make a gesture of good faith to keep the "new" owner happy that's fine but part of the risk / reward with M. Bryant is the fact of his talent vs his 2 cent brain.

Agree with the above.  If I were you, I would put it on him.  Email the owners in the league (or post to the message board) and say that you did the deal in good faith and found out later about the suspension, but you're fine if the other owner wants to reverse the trade.

Shows the new owner that you're not a jerk, and allows both of you a chance to "be the bigger man" (so long as he lets the trade happen).

I agree with both of these. you did nothing wrong but if it were me I'd offer something else for Rosen. If he offered the trade after the player was cut then hes an idiot and I'd do nothing

Yeah, I'm assuming the decision to suspend/cut Bryant hadn't been made.

I agree with this.  Sounds like you will be in the same league for years.
