trading multiple picks, players, etc. (1 Viewer)

This is going to be our first year of a keeper leage (keeping guys from last year). We are using cbssportsline.com to run the league... Our keepers are due tomorrow and then i will be dropping the rest of the rosters. My question is in relation to trades between then and the draft. For example, how does it work if someone trades 3 of their picks for 1 or 2 of another owners? Seems like it would throw off the roster size requirements wouldnt it. THe guy getting the 3 picks would obviously have another pick?? Or do the deals need to be even (3 players/picks for 3 players/picks)??? Also, does CBS support this kind of trading prior to the draft??? Thanks a lot guys.

Generally speaking, it's just a matter of preference for your league.

If allowed, the guy acquiring the extra pick would have to cut an extra player to get down to your roster limit before the season begins and the other guy would have to find a free agent post-draft to get up to the correct roster total if you have a roster minimum. Personally, I like the same number of players/picks going each way in a trade as a simple way of maintaining roster sizes at all times, but on the other hand, it does limit some of the trading flexibility.

Since it's a new situation for your league, I would discuss it with your owners and get something put in place regarding a roster minimum/maximum, cut-down date, etc. prior to the draft. Good luck with it.

As for how CBS would handle it, I don't know, haven't ever used them for a league.

Thanks... So in a situation like you mentioned the one owner would actually draft more than the max size is..and then gut right down after the draft?? Just want to make sure that is accurate... I guess we really dont have a minumum total roster size...my mistake. What is the typical timeframe between the draft and when the roster would need to get cut?

We have a rule in our league that all draft pick trades be even in number of picks.

If a guy want to trade his 1st and 2nd pick for someone elses 1st then just have the guy who is getting the two picks to throw in his last round pick to make it even. Should be pretty easy to work out.

Yep, just select a cut-down date after your draft and prior to the first NFL game - whatever time frame seems good to you guys, it could be right after the draft or right before the season opens, etc. Consider your post-draft waiver period when deciding on the cut-down date. Allowing an owner to draft more than the max roster size should also open things to allow owners to gather players through post-draft waivers in excess of the roster max.

So, it would go like this:

1. Draft day.

2. Waivers to add free agents - either in bidding sessions or in a free-for-all, depending on your league's set-up.

3. Cut down date - to get all rosters under the max.

4. Season opens.
