Trading out of the first round (redraft) (1 Viewer)

I don't want this to turn into (or seem like an) Assistant Coach thread, so I'll keep the specifics in my current case to a minimum. Last year I had the first overall and tried to coordinate a deal to acquire the second overall pick to get a LT/LJ starting corps. I would have given up my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th for the 2nd overall, plus some mid rounders...in the 7-10 range. It had been on the table and discussed at length. I then decided I was giving up too much and pulled the offer. It ended up working well for me in the long run, but I still wonder what could have been and how much to give up.

This year I am facing a similar decision, but reversed. Clearly if I thought I was giving up too much last year it should be a no brainer, but the lure of the "high pick stud" keeps holding me back. Has anyone ever traded out of the first round entirely and if so, what did it take for you to do it?

If anyone really wants to discuss my specific current situation, PM me so this thread stays "Shark Pool" friendly.

Can't say specifically since both my leagues are keepers now, but...

The thing to do here is to get the Draft Dominator, enter your league setup, and run a mock draft. Not an auto-mock, where the DD does everything based on VBD, but an actual draft that you run yourself. Factor in what you know about your league (who takes QBs early, who's a homer, who's a guppy, etc). I did a freelance article last year if you're looking for more details, but it's pretty simple and shouldn't take more than ten or fifteen minutes.

Then take a look at who was available in each round at the picks you would be trading away. It removes the abstract thinking from the exercise. It's hard to say whether LJ is worth a second, third and fourth rounder, but it's a lot easier to figure out if LJ is worth McGahee, Owens and Peterson.

Of course, keep in mind that it's possible for this sort of trade to benefit both teams, or to hurt both teams, depending on what sort of team they can draft the rest of the way.

I have the 12th overall pick in the 1st and have just traded it away for the other teams 2nd and 5th round pick (last pick in the second round, 1st pick in the 5th round).
