Chiefs QB Green cleared for full contact
By ELIZABETH MERRILL
The Kansas City Star
After 10 weeks of waiting, Chiefs quarterback Trent Green has been cleared to participate in full contact.
President/general manager Carl Peterson announced Tuesday night that Green can begin game preparations today, when the Chiefs resume practice. Earlier in the day, coach Herm Edwards said he’d wait until later in the week to decide whether Green will start against the Raiders. Green was knocked unconscious in the season opener, and has watched Damon Huard lead the team to a 5-3 record as a starter.
The Chiefs’ offense was shut down Sunday at Miami, managing just 10 points and 265 yards.
“We’re very pleased to report that we received information this evening that Trent Green has been cleared to begin full practice with the team starting Wednesday," Peterson said Tuesday night. "It has always been our position to err on the side of caution and we closely followed the advice of the medical team that has examined Trent these past two months. It is their opinion that he is now ready to resume a full practice schedule. I know that our fans and his fellow players from around the NFL will be happy to welcome him back.”

Q: If Trent Green is cleared to play will he play on Sunday?
EDWARDS: “I don’t know that. I’ll wait and see. First of all he has to be cleared; he’s got to practice and then I’ve got to make a decision and I’ll make the right decision for the football team. I don’t know that right now sitting at this table.”
Q: When would you need to make that decision? Wednesday?
EDWARDS: “I don’t have to make it until Sunday and why would I. Why would I let the Raiders know what I’m going to do? That’s not very smart.”
Q: But there’s a difference between making it and announcing yet.
EDWARDS: “Oh yeah, I won’t have to announce it and I won’t. Come Sunday and find out.”
Q: But as far as making the decision…
EDWARDS: “Yeah, I’ll make a decision during the week if he’s cleared to participate and I’ll have to weigh all the options. I’ve thought about it; I’ve thought about it for 10 weeks, to be quite honest.”
Q: How much as far as his rustiness and his timing play in you being able to judge on the practice field if he plays or not?
EDWARDS: “Practice and games are different, obviously, and you see some things in practice in seven-on-seven that he does very, very well. But we get into this lull that he’s going to be rusty. Well, they’re going to be rusty. It doesn’t matter. If you haven’t participated in eight or nine games you’re going to be rusty whether it’s this week, next week, three weeks from now, next year, you’re going to be rusty.
“But that doesn’t put all the emphasis on him. What we’ve got realize is what we’re going to do offensively. Who’s going to run the offense? Right now it’s Damon Huard and Damon Huard’s done a good job.”
Q: Is there more concern putting him back in there with a banged-up line and the protection not as good as you would have liked last week?
EDWARDS: “No, I don’t worry about that. I think our line is doing a good job, but I think what you can’t allow to happen is what happened to us last week when you get in the third-and-longs and they get after you a little bit. Then you get behind in the fourth quarter and you have to throw the football. Those are known situations to any defense and they’re going to hit the quarterback. We can’t do that.
“The last couple of games we didn’t get in that situation. We were on the road against St. Louis and got some turnovers early and got some scores. You have to understand that offensively if you get behind early and you don’t score early in football games the known downs become very known if you don’t make yardage on first down. That’s what happened to us (last week in Miami).”
Q: Does two games in five days affect the decision at the quarterback position at all?
EDWARDS: “No, not really. I don’t see that being a big factor. I just think that you’ve got to make sure that when you have a short schedule like this that the players are getting the right information because everything has to be in a Reader’s Digest form. You’ve got to really clarify some things you want to do. You can’t make it real difficult for these guys because they’re playing two games in a row back to back without a lot of preparation or practice.
“Sometimes players like that because historically players don’t like practice; they really don’t. They would rather play so it kinda works in your favor a little bit because we’re only practicing once this week and they like that.”
