Barring unforeseen disaster, Brandon Weeden will line up under center when the Cleveland Browns host the Philadelphia Eagles in the season opener. Who Weeden will hand off to remains as cloudy as ever.
Rookie running back Trent Richardson hasn't practiced in weeks or played in either of the team's two preseason games after having his knee scoped earlier this month.
Browns president Mike Holmgren told SportsTime Ohio, via The Plain Dealer, that "there's a chance" Richardson will be ready for the Sept. 9 tilt, but the team is reluctant to rush him back.
Richardson will run in a pool Wednesday and might do the same out of water next week. The team's first-round pick "should be back on the field doing something next week," Holmgren told the site.
Even if he's healthy for Week 1, this isn't what the Browns had in mind.
Richardson will need to be eased into action upon his return, meaning you're going to see a heavy dose of Montario Hardesty early in the year. Hardesty works -- in theory -- spelling a premier back, but he's never proven he can stay healthy or manage a lead role. Weeden, as much as anyone, needs Richardson back in the lineup. Until he returns, we're not going to see this offense bloom
lis francI am waiting for Moderated to review the tape and post his report. It is reassuring to know that hes had the same surgeon since HS. can you post this lis franc(foot injury?) or any link about questionable (much better thn doubtful) but still any links? If Richardson is now truly questionable for week 1, how worried should we be? It was just within the last week or two where everyone was saying that the second medical procedure on his knee was "no big deal" and that he would be playing in a few preseason games.
Sorry I was joking because I think it was moderated who posted lis francs for a couple players over the past couple years and got flamed. Pardon if I'm mistaken. Why you post foot injury? Bone tissue can be shaved to remove calcium deposits or bone spurs.
Soft tissues (such as ligaments, tendons, or cartilage) can be repaired or trimmed.
Ligaments can be cut, repaired, or reconstructed.
Cutting or releasing a tight ligament may allow increased range of motion for a stiff joint.
A sample of joint tissue or joint fluid (synovial fluid) may be collected for laboratory analysis (biopsy).
Scar tissue or an area of joint lining (synovium) that is inflamed can be removed.
I believe he will be rdy to burn it up 1st game (smart to listen to Jene though)

I would be surprised if he does startI would be really surprised if he doesn't start week 1.
Cleveland Browns first-round pick Trent Richardson is expected to play in the team's regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, a team source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
The Browns are likely to limit Richardson's workload until he has more time to heal from his most recent knee surgery, the source told Schefter.
Richardson had what the team termed "routine arthroscopic" surgery by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla., on Aug. 9.
Andrews did a similar procedure on Richardson on Feb. 3 to repair a torn meniscus the running back suffered in the same knee while playing for Alabama during its BCS national championship victory over LSU.
A team source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that the Browns will play Trent Richardson in the season opener, but they will limit the workload of the rookie running back until he has more time to heal from his most recent knee surgery.
That's the right move by the Browns. In fact, that's the only move they can make.
The Browns' current brain trust -- team president Mike Holmgren, general manager Tom Heckert and coach Pat Shurmur -- might be tempted to play Richardson more. After all, their jobs are essentially on the line this year after the recent change in ownership. But, with as many as seven rookies or second-year players starting this year on offense, the franchise has to make every decision while thinking of the future.
Richardson, the third overall pick of the 2012 draft, hasn't practiced since getting his right knee scoped Aug. 9. He is scheduled to do some work on the field next week, according to Holmgren. What everyone should remember is Holmgren saying the Browns are going to be "smart" with Richardson.
That indicates the team isn't going to rush Richardson back. Jimmy Haslam just bought the team and he doesn't want to hurt the future of the Browns' biggest investment of the year. Richardson has already had two surgeries on this knee this offseason. The Browns don't want to do anything that would lead to a third.
The regular-season opener has to be treated like a preseason opener for Richardson. That's why it would be surprising to see Richardson get more than 10 carries Sept. 9 against Philadelphia. There's really no pressure to give him more playing time than that, either. Browns backup Montario Hardesty has played well this preseason (except for a fumble against Green Bay), and more importantly, he hasn't gone down with an injury as in the past two years.
Brandon Weeden has the unenviable task of facing the Philadelphia Eagles again in two short weeks. The Cleveland Browns quarterback struggled with rookie mistakes in Friday night's loss. Part of the problem was a running game that stalled out of the gate.
Rookie running back Trent Richardson remains out of commission, but there's "a pretty good chance" he'll be on the field when the Eagles return for the season opener on Sept. 9, general manager Tom Heckert said during Friday's game broadcast.
Heckert's timetable falls in line with what we've heard for weeks. Richardson underwent a knee scope earlier this month and hasn't practiced since. The team will need to ease him into action, meaning a heavy dose of Montario Hardesty might be on tap for much of September. Hardesty has fumbled twice in the past two games. He isn't the type of runner who builds rhythm or improves with a larger workload.
The Eagles ignored Cleveland's running game on Friday. Scared of nothing in that backfield, Philly zoned in on Weeden, who hasn't shown an ability to escape pressure or work his way out of a collapsing pocket. This team needs Richardson -- or someone -- to appear in that backfield if the Browns are to bloom into anything other than a minor disaster.
Obviously...from a week-one-only fantasy perspective this is the worst case:you'll be forced to start Hardesty and he'll get vultured at an unknown rate by Richardson. Ugh...Heckert: 'Pretty good chance' Richardson plays Week 1

FYI Jackson moved ahead of Hardesty on depth chart after Friday due to fumbling and missed blocks.I still expect TRich to get bulk of work in week 1 and certainly beyond.Obviously...from a week-one-only fantasy perspective this is the worst case:you'll be forced to start Hardesty and he'll get vultured at an unknown rate by Richardson. Good point on Bjax...but could we honestly set TRich's week 1 touches over/under at >10 if he got nothing all preseason long?FYI Jackson moved ahead of Hardesty on depth chart after Friday due to fumbling and missed blocks.I still expect TRich to get bulk of work in week 1 and certainly beyond.Obviously...from a week-one-only fantasy perspective this is the worst case:you'll be forced to start Hardesty and he'll get vultured at an unknown rate by Richardson. If he fully practices in the week leading up to the game then yes. Otherwise he's an avoid for week 1.Good point on Bjax...but could we honestly set TRich's week 1 touches over/under at >10 if he got nothing all preseason long?FYI Jackson moved ahead of Hardesty on depth chart after Friday due to fumbling and missed blocks.I still expect TRich to get bulk of work in week 1 and certainly beyond.Obviously...from a week-one-only fantasy perspective this is the worst case:you'll be forced to start Hardesty and he'll get vultured at an unknown rate by Richardson. I added one key piece of the equation in bold above that would push me to agree with you on this.If he fully practices and takes >80% of the reps with the 1's in the week leading up to the game then yes.
