Trick Knee (1 Viewer)

One of my knees has a feeling of weakness or looseness, like it could give out at any time. I've searched the web for indications of what it might be, but it seems everything refers to pain and weakness or swelling and weakness. The only symptom I have is a weakness feeling. It does not bother me when playing basketball or softball, but it seems like an injury just waiting to happen. Anyone ever experience this.

Both of my knees are like this. I don't know the exact physical cause, but it's definitely associated with aging (not with "being elderly", but with "not being in your 20s").

What's weird about it is that my knees don't feel this way all the time. I might take 100 steps, and then on step 101 one of my knees will buckle. Not enough for me to hit the deck, but enough for me to take kind of a funky step to recover. Then I'll keep walking the rest of the day with no further issues.

I've alweys considered it a sub-clinical thing ... not serious enough to see a doctor about. Just one of life's mild inconveniences. Others' mileage may vary.

Could be one thing or several things in conjunction... could be torn (or partially torn) ligaments (ACL, MCL, PCL) but you may have noticed swelling after it happened but unlike primo athletes, you can continue on without one without knowing it was torn or strained (partially town or frayed). And that could have happened years ago... Could also be worn or torn meniscus (cartilage) in your knee from your regular gait. And if that is an issue, it could lead to instability. May be muscle weakness or inequity on one side of the knee...

...or, of course, the first stages of the ball cancer...

Thanks Seadog. Wouldn't I have noticed it hurting at some point? I mean, yeah, I'm a specimen that doesn't often notice pain, but this seems odd.

I had a torn meniscus and had no knowledge of an incident that caused it. It was just swollen one day. I waited a couple of years before having it fixed and continued to play softball and other sports. It bothered me periodically and finally I had the surgery.

If I had to take a guess, I would think you probably have some meniscus damage.

You would have residual soreness...

When I tore my ligaments, that wasn't what hurt...it was the cartilage that jammed up under my knee cap so I couldn't extend my leg. Of course, I got crackbacked but it wasn't like I got Marcus Lattimore-d...

But I still eat ibuprofen like candy...but that's more for the swelling of bone on bone since they cleaned out my knee of the cartilage.

If I had to guess, I would say its a weakness in your popliteus muscle either neurological or physiological. The popliteus stabilizes your knee. PM if you want more information as I don't check this regularly.

One thing I have noticed is that if I have my foot off the ground and turn just my foot while leaving the leg straight, I can feel a bit of pain. Not overwhelming, but it's there.

How is your lower back? Often times herniated discs pinch nerves that travels to the knee and down the calf.

I don't have any pain in my body at all....even my knee, unless I purposely turn my foot like I mentioned, and even then, it isn't terrible. I really appreciate all the responses.
