Troy Smith (1 Viewer)

I wonder if his pending NFL career will spur as much vitriole and bashing as Vince has on these boards?

Only if he dominates the national championship game then fails the wonderlic. I doubt he'll be as polarizing as Young, but I also doubt his supporters will be strong in number. I think he's a great prospect. I like him better than Quinn. There I said it. (Actually I said it last January)

Honestly, I agree. While both have excellent talent around them, Troy smith appears to hit his guys more in stride. Also, he appears to have that same sense of trust from his teammates that VY inspired. He will probably get knocked down unfairly because of his height (6'1 maybe), but imo he is complete in terms of accuracy, arm strength, leadership and mobility (he is not a pure runner though).

Did you guys hear his immediate post-game interview on ABC? This kid smart, or he sure comes across that way. And didn't take *one* ounce of the credit for the victory--it was all his linemen and the coaching staff. I know he has had some shadiness in the past, but he sure came across as a class act in that interview.

I'm no Buckeye fan, but I think I'm rooting for this kid.

I really liked what I saw tonight. The amount of progress he's made since last years game vs. Texas is remarkable, and very recognizable. He's calm and deliberate in the pocket but knows when to escape, and does a good job of it. He has a steady handle on the ball at all times and seems to secure it very well. Strong, accurate arm (as far as I could tell tonight) and he looks unafraid to make tough throws. I liked the audible he made on Ginn touchdown pass, recognizing the man coverage and looking off the safety before making his throw - a very encouraging thing to see from him.

The problem I have with evaluating him based on this game is that Texas was giving him wide-open throwing lanes. Their secondary was absolutely shredded, and I'd like to see what he can do against a more challenging defensive backfield. He looked remarkable on a few deep throws to Tedd Ginn (specifically the touchdown pass [again], which was a nice soft drop in over his shoulder), but I just don't know how he'd react when a corner is all over his man. I definitely like all of his intangible qualities; he seems very poised and has certainly grown up quickly since his little booster scandal, and it looks like he has a nice rapport with his receivers. The guy throws an absolute dart, too, but he seems to know when to take a little off and when to zip it in, so I’m not concerned about that.

Right now I’d put him slightly ahead of Brady Quinn because of his athleticism, and the fact that it looks like he has a bit stronger arm. I honestly expected big things from Smith this year and it looks like he’s living up to that.

I was also suprised with how calm Colt McCoy was, the guy looks great for a freshman - fearless in the pocket. He made more than his share of mistakes but that's something most young QB's will make in his position. Someone to watch for sure. Tedd Ginn looked like, well, Tedd Ginn; someone that needs more polish, but on any given play can break one deep. Jamaal Charles looked much the same.

I was a big fan of what Vince Young did on the field, but how anyone could listen to Troy Smith after tonight's game and think they're comparable from an intellect standpoint is beyond me. I had posted this in another thread tonight:
Wow...I was really impressed with Troy Smith tonight. Not just his play (which obviously was stellar), but how well spoken and mature he was in post game interviews. He said all the right things (kept deferring praise to his line and his coaches for their game planning, wouldn't take the bait on this being a revenge game, etc...). He's the kind of kid (ability, leadership, poise on and off the field) who I could see being an NFL signal caller for sure.

Totally agree--he showed *great* pocket presence tonight. Lots of side-steps. Didn't take off and run, just slid away from the pressure and then got the ball off. He was terribly impressive tonight.

No, although he did show great strides in the pocket tonight. Patience is a virtue! He's got the leadership capabilities but we've seen a Troy Smith type QB time and time again. Brad Smith, Michael Robinson, Arnez Battle, Eric Crouch, Ronald Curry, and the list goes on and on. Other than Battle, these guys had distinguished college careers as Troy will. These run/throwing QB's have been the way of success in College Football recently but at the next level you need to be extraordinary in order to stay at QB. Vince Young, Steve McNair, Steve Young, Mike Vick, etc. I am an Ohioan and Buckeye fan through and through but I just don't see him at the next level. And believe I'd love it if every Buckeye would suceed in the NFL but in reality that's a crazy dream. Go Bucks and hope to see them back out in our 2nd home..... TEMPE ARIZONA!!!!

As an NFL prospect Troy Smith isn't even close to Brady Quinn people.

To compare...

Brady Quinn ---> Eli Manning

Troy Smith ---> David Garrard

I think the more imminent comparison with him is to McNair, Young (Steve), and McNabb. Smith showed us that he can stay in the pocket and become a pure quarterback on the field, and compliment his passing abilities with the threat to scramble instead of relying on it. Crouch, Battle, Curry, Randle-El, and others never showed that capability. They were guys that would make their primary read, leave the pocket, take another glance down the field, and then bolt towards the first down marker (or option QB's). They were also cursed with relatively weak arms, or the inability to make certain throws; Smith suffers from neither. I think Smith has a very good chance to separate himself from that, and he took a nice, long step towards it tonight. I saw the same leap from him that we all saw when McNabb and Young (Steve) decided to use their arm first in the NFL, and I expect him to expand on that in the coming future. His pocket presence has grown exponentially and I'm actually very excited with how his season could end up and his pro potential.I’m also expecting a Buckeye/Fighting Irish Championship Game, so goodluck ;)

If he was 6'4", scouts would be singing his praises. At 6'1" (maybe), he'll be lucky to be taken in the 3rd round.

That said, I like him...a lot.

Big Buckeye fan here, I love the guy buy time wil tell, I'd call him a 4th round or later backup type right now, 6' 0'' QB's just don't get it done in the NFL

Vick is a below average NFL QB, who makes poor decisions, but runs fast.

Smith has a decent arm, but at this point doesn't appear to be a a sure fire prospect

Size isn't to his advantage, but to say it excludes him entirely is wrong. Drew Brees is a decent example of a shorter QB who has had success, and was also drafted around the same area I expect Troy Smith to be (early second, in this case mid-to-late second). It's something he could - and hopefully will - overcome.

I see Smith coming off the board after Quinn and Stanton for sure and maybe a few others could leap frog him. The fact is, this QB class has a ton of proto-type 6'5" pocket passers with big arms. I for one like Jordan Palmer. My best bet at this point; he's the third QB off the board to a west coast hybrid that runs a lot of motion for the QB.

:lmao: at all this troy smith talk

he should talk to michael robinson and brad smith... for that is his nfl future, if he has one at all.

He is a much better passer than Robinson, Smith or McNeal. He isn't nearly the project Vick and Young are, albeit missing their physical tools.

I still haven't got Smith pegged, but right now I think the best way to describe him would be a cross between Steve Young and Doug Flutie. He seems to keep adding different aspects to his game. For instance, that maturity that everyone talks about where he wouldn't take credit for the win didn't start until about week 3 or 4 of last year. Smith could have easily wound up like Clarrett but he's gotten a lot of great advice and he's actually listened. I'd pick him right now over Young or Vick. He's smarter more accurate and more mature and has big arm like them. He is not as good of a runner, but I don't think your QB running for 1000 yards gets you to the big game anyway and it's not a huge drop from Vick's running game to his.
