Tsunmai Advisory, US West coast (1 Viewer)

From BBC

The US and Japan have advised people on their Pacific coastlines to get away from the shore as a precaution against tsunami waves caused by a volcano eruption in the South Pacific.

Japan has warned of waves as high as three metres, and waves of 1.2 metres hit the south of the country.

The US warned of strong currents and waves, and coastal flooding.

The huge underwater volcanic eruption caused waves of more than a metre to crash into Tonga.

The eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano was heard across the South Pacific, and eventually as far away as the US.

Many parts of Tonga, whose capital is just 65km (40 miles) south of the eruption, are covered in ash and are experiencing a near-total blackout of power, phone lines and internet services. The extent of any injuries or damage is still unclear.

Social media footage showed water washing through a church and several homes, and witnesses said ash was falling over the capital, Nuku'alofa.

One resident, Mere Taufa, said the eruption had hit as her family was preparing for dinner, and her younger brother had thought bombs were exploding nearby.

"My first instinct was to take cover under the table, I grabbed my little sister, and screamed at my parents and others in the house to do the same," New Zealand news site Stuff.co.nz quoted her as saying.

Ms Taufa said the next thing she knew, water was rushing into their home.

"You could just hear screams everywhere, people screaming for safety, for everyone to get to higher ground," she added.

The plumes of gas, smoke and ash pouring from the volcano reached 20km into the sky, Tonga Geological Services said.

In Japan, the 1.2m tsunami was recorded in the Kominato district of Amami-Oshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture at 23:55 (14:55 GMT) on Saturday.

So violent was the initial eight-minute eruption that it could be heard as "loud thunder sounds" in Fiji, more than 800km away, according to officials in the capital, Suva.

The Fijian government issued a tsunami advisory and opened evacuation centres for people in coastal areas. Vanuatu, another island nation in the Pacific, issued a similar warning.

Prof Shane Cronin, a volcanologist at the University of Auckland, said the eruption was one of the biggest in Tonga in the past 30 years.

"This is a pretty big event - it's one of the more significant eruptions of the last decade at least," he told the BBC.

"The most remarkable thing about it is how rapidly and violently it's spread. This one was larger, a much wider lateral spread, much more ash was produced. I expect there to be many centimetres of ash that have been deposited on Tonga."

A spokesperson for the Australian government said the prime minister and minister for foreign affairs were monitoring the situation and ready to provide support on request.

A tsunami warning has been issued for parts of Australia's east coast and Tasmania.

In New Zealand, which is more than 2,300km away from Tonga, the National Emergency Management Agency said coastal areas on the north and east coast of the North Island could see "strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore".

Local forecaster Weather Watch tweeted about the eruption: "The energy release is simply astonishing", adding: "Reports of people hearing the sonic booms across New Zealand."

Minor flooding in low lying areas around here but not as bad as the surge during the King tide a couple of weeks ago.  The beaches have still been closed.

I just came back from a walk and it seemed like a normal day for sail boats on the Bay.  I guess the Golden Gate is narrow enough to break up the wave front.

Just saw video from Santa Cruz from two hours ago...Marina with parking lot underwater, water rushing back out to sea.

This makes me angry. Lives risked and treasury lost to save a moron who knew better.

I feel like this behavior should require a hefty fine after rescue, as if to say “We rescued you for your idiocy, and now you get to foot the bill. Turns out stupidity is expensive.”

Is it a wrong assumption to say that this surfer was extremely lucky to be located? Or do surfers and such regularly have waterproof electronic devices on their person while out in the water? I assume an iPhone sealed in a Ziploc bag and jammed into a pocket of your board shorts ... that that wouldn't cut it when you take leave of your board.

UPDATE: Surfer rescued by our rescue swimmers and Rescue Boat 1 #SFFDRB1-- Victim being taken from Ocean Beach to China Beach for safe offload and will be okay per our Paramedics on #SFFDRB1 -- Rescue closed

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Despite desperate warnings from officials to stay away from the beaches, rescue crews pulled five people to safety after they ventured too close to the ocean waters churned up by the surge from Saturday’s tsunami.

San Francisco firefighters deployed rescue swimmers Saturday afternoon when a group of surfers were spotted in distress at Kelly’s Cove near the Cliff House on Ocean Beach.

“At 2:40 PM today a female adult surfer was rescued at Ocean Beach by #SFFD and did not require medical care. In total, we had 25 safety contacts and 3 rescues today,” the fire department tweeted.

But the rescue wasn’t easy even for the experienced SFFD swimmers.

“SURFER SAFE ON @USCG VESSELL CONDITIONS SO SEVERE WE ARE NOW WORKING ON GETTING OUR RESCUE SWIMMERS SAFELY ONBOARD,” the department tweeted during the rescue.

The woman was taken to China Beach where she was treated by paramedics. Her condition was not released.

While some surfers ventured into the waters, other chosen to just watch the crashing waves from the beach. Among them was Vanessa Marlin.

“It really doesn’t look much different than it normally would on a Saturday or any given day at this end of the beach,” she said. “It’s definitely messy, but there are some peaks that could be surf able, but we’re not going out today because it seems like it would be a bad idea with the tsunami advisory in effect. We’re just appreciating the waves and the beauty that we see in front of us.”

NWS forecaster Brian Garcia said the surf was even more dangerous because of the pulsating nature of the tsunami surge.

“All of the amplitudes we’ve seen so far have generally been in that [one to three foot] range. I think one site along the California coast has gone above that,” he said.

Meanwhile on the San Mateo County coast, two fishermen were in stable condition after being swept into the water at San Gregorio State Beach.
One fisherman was pulled from the water unconscious. They had to be airlifted to awaiting ambulances.

My kids watch "North Wood Law" which follows Game Warden officers in the northeast states.  In one episode they helped in a rescue of of a group of hikers.  Turns out that one of the hikers had a pot brownie during or before the hike and was also on other medicine.  Those reacted with each other and she went into a deep nap that the other hikers could not wake her up from.   Once the rescuers got her back to the parking lot she was issued a bill from the county for the rescue because it was a preventable situation.

did you see the ones pulled back- so you can see more of the globe? those are the ones that really blow me away... as much as the "close" up does too.
yep. there's one that shows what appears to be a pretty sizable hurricane/cyclone to the west of the volcano.. which just gets dwarfed by the size of the explosion.

incredible

The Grand Canyon has signs saying if they have to rescue you, you’re getting billed. At least they did ~20 years ago when I was there.
