If someone told me to "turn up" the air conditioner I would assume they want it to be colder.
Me too and my wife always says this when she wants it to be turn to a warmer temperature so I always make it colder anyway to mess with her and then an argument ensues

This is a peeve of mine as well.  I know from experience that my wife means "make it colder," and that's how I voted.  With guests/others that say this, I always ask "Would you like it colder or warmer?", just to clarify.

I guess I'm in the minority.  If I have the AC set to 72 and you want me to turn it up, I move it to 73 or 74 ... warmer.

That's the thermostat, not the AC.

Turn something up means make it do more of what it does.

Air conditioning (often referred to as AC, A.C., or A/C) is the process of removing or adding heat from/to a space, thus cooling or heating the space's average temperature

Mine goes to 11.  Most guys, when they want it colder they turn it all the way up to 10.  But when you need it just a little bit cooler - where can they go?  Nowhere.

When I need it a little colder, I crank it up to 11.  One level colder.

Instead, they should ask you to turn down the heater.

Turn up the AC:

AC = make it cold.  Make more AC (turn it up) means colder.

When you live in a Democratic Republic, up means down

Clearly make it colder.

Just like turn up the heat clearly means make it it hotter.
