Dudley Guice played WR for Northwestern Louisiana State at Natchitoches, LA. Bloom and Lammey had a nice write-up of him at Tx v Nation where he opened some eyes. Ironically he wouldn't have even been on the field if Dominique Edison of Steven F Austin (Nacogdoches TX) hadn't sat out with an injury.
Now his stock rose even higher (Per Gil Brandt):
The official Northwestern Louisiana State Pro Day is on March 19, but one scout (from the NO Saints) showed up on Tuesday, so the school held an impromptu workout. "WR Dudley Guice put up some impressive numbers on the outdoor FieldTurf track. He checked in at 6-foot-2 1/2, 209 pounds and ran a 4.40- and a 4.43-second 40-yard dash. That time would have ranked him among the fastest participants at last month’s combine. He also had a 39-inch vertical jump, 10-foot, 5-inch broad jump, a 4.01-second short shuttle, a 6.61-second three-cone drill and 12 bench-press reps. It is also noteworthy that he has 34-inch arms — a good measurement for a wideout." Obviously, great numbers. The last NFL player I remember from that school was QB Craig Nall.
From a write up of his last collegiate game against SFA:
"Senior receiver Dudley Guice made his last game his best game Saturday night and as a result won Southland Conference football Offensive Player of the Week honors Monday after career-high receiving totals in a 34-24 win at Stephen F. Austin.
Guice, who had 24 receptions this season entering the game, snagged 11 for 190 yards including a 74-yard touchdown on the Demons’ first play of the night. His 11 catches in the that game was third best in school history, and his 190 receiving yards ranked sixth-best in school history.
Guice finished the season leading the Demons in receptions (with only 35), yardage (a career-best 606, doubling his career total) and touchdown catches (5). The three-year starter from Fayette, Miss.-Trinity Episcopal School played this fall while taking classes in addiction studies after graduating cum laude with a 3.597 grade point average last spring in criminal justice. So Guice is extremely intelligent, but has been underproductive, especially given his level of competition. But the 'measurables' are definitely there.
A career comparison with Dominique Edison is revealing since these two schools are less than 120 miles apart and play in the same conference. SFA's Edison is almost exactly the same size (just over 6'2, 204) and similar 'measurables'. Edison WAS invited to the combine where he ran a 4.45, had a 37 in vert, and jumped 10.'
Edison plays faster than Guice, and has been much more productive. Not only did he set a new SLC record with 18 TD catches (compared to 5) during his senior year, Edison became only the fourth Lumberjack to record 1,000 yards receiving in a single season, and leaves SFA as the school's all-time leader with 182 receptions, second all-time in school history with 2,696 receiving yards and is second all-time with 28 TD receptions.
Both of these guys have great size/speed ratios and the potential to be drafted late. But one wonders why Guice lags so far behind Edison in production. I'd be interested in Matt Waldman's evaluation of these two in the RSP.
