Great card, even though I was rooting for Alvarez, Thompson and Kowalkiewicz. Conor is so money. There's really no one even close to him in the UFC in terms of that superstar aura and drawing power.

Looked at the list of the next few cards, though, and it's brutal. 5 minor cards until 206 next month, and there are MAYBE 5 or 6 fights I'd really care to watch in those combined cards. I'm sure there will be some entertaining stuff there, but as far as capturing my interest, meh. That said, the 206 main card is sweet.

 
Gotta think that McGregor has to defend the FW belt next if he plans to hold on to it. I'm guessing that he stays at LW though, and I wouldn't be surprised if he fights a rubber match against Diaz while Ferguson and Khabib get to wait. Conor can pretty much call whatever shot he wants at this point.

he'd go down to 155 for that payday.   He fought at 160 in strikeforce and I don't remember exactly what the Gomi/Pride fight weight class was at (160#?)   but he's been down near there before.   For a red panty payday, he'd get there again.

I still think that it's ridiculous though. McGregor now holds two belts, including one which he hasn't defended since winning it a year ago. He needs to start defending against the top contenders whether those guys are big names / paydays or not. Fighting unranked or mid-level dudes out of division is weak sauce when it stands to hold up two entire divisions simultaneously.

I'll actually be surprised if GSP fights in the UFC again. They'd need to throw a TON of cash at him in order to make up for the difference in sponsorship money that he was making before vs. now under the crappy Reebok deal.

I think he defends his belt in Croke Park against Nate Diaz. 

It's a huge payday and he can let the others build more buzz around them.

If we go by the preliminary buy prediction for UFC 205, which is around 1.6 million buys, Conor McGregor has drawn an estimated six million buys in a 12 month period. Remember, the entire UFC roster drew 3-3.2m in 2014. Conor McGregor drew double that, on his own, in 12 months.

As much as I'd like to see the Trilogy play out, I just don't feel like it's the right time (from someone with no stake in the UFC of course).  What the UFC is doing to the belts in these two classes is very questionable.

LW belt is fine as of now, not so much if he doesn't fight Khabib or Ferguson next. FW belt is a sham at this point, obviously.

 
Two full UFC cards today, with one of them being 13 fights long, and not much I'd go out of my way to see, but I'll leave it on anyway. There's Mousasi/Hall, Thominhas, Gadelha and...I guess Nogueira/Bader 2? No idea who decided the world needed that rematch, though, much less as a main event.

And Bellator fights later tonight.

As much as I hate to say it, I think Ben Henderson is good to lose tonight. His training just hasn't looked very intense the last couple months - it looked in the gym like he wasn't taking the fight really seriously. I wound not be surprised to see him lose badly.

i'm wondering how long the shtick with Conner can last though for drawing power. for the first time in over 10 years i seem to not really care a ton about MMA. some guys i look forward to growing and getting better, and some guys looking to see how they can do, but as a whole, just seem to be losing interest. I think a good part of it is the over-saturation of McGreggor and his coach who for some reason needs to stick his face in every media outlet to talk #### about other fighters. I'm sure a break will help and the interest will grow again, so i actually think the hiatus until May from McGreggor was somewhat planned with the idea that he knows this is way overkill and can't last forever with his over the top arrogance

on that note, taking Bader inside the distance and Chandler tonight, but really kind of  :shrug: about it. I think the Jones stuff has contributed too, guy should be defending his belt, and all i have read about his ban seems like (1) he is a bit of a dope, but (2) there is zero reason to ban anybody for that

ETA: big rumour is Conner going to Wrestlemania 33 for something with the Rock. that would be good for everyone

no he doesn't.  He needs to do what's best for him and make the most money possible while he can.  Zero reason for him to fight some guy nobody knows about regardless of their ranking.

His goal is to make the most money possible in a sport where careers can be ended quickly, that's smart of him.

Realistically, he's making close to 8 figures regardless of who he's fighting -- but I really don't blame McGregor himself. It's on the UFC more than on McGregor -- they need to strip him of the FW belt at this point if he doesn't defend it. Turning the UFC into pro wrestling might make more $$$ in the short term, but it's probably a bad long term move.

I don't get this. Every single fight of his has been entertaining. Stop reading the websites if his promo shtick bothers you than much. He's the best thing the UFC has had in years; inside the octagon and outside of it.

the single most entertaining press conferences and weigh ins ive ever watched in both boxing and UFC ...pure gold ...then he tops it off with awesome fights ...no rolling around on the ground for 25 minutes ...real fighting ...blood ,guts and sweat 

 
I respect Usman's hustle, but I don't think he wants any part of Demian's grappling.

Good on him for actually calling someone out though. Perfect post-fight promo work.

i am not disagreeing that they have been entertaining, but like my original post, how long can he keep it up. I mean it is the same thing, rinse and repeat with him every time. he threw a water bottle already, and this time grabbed a chair. I enjoyed it in the beginning, but at this point it is taking away from other fighters in the UFC and has gone over the top. his fans also make me cringe constantly too. His psychological game is certainly the best i think we have ever seen. to make Eddie fight so dumb after all he has done and all the fights and venues he has been was amazing. i just think holding 2 exciting weight classes hostage until probably next summer is certainly not good for the sport, no matter how much people love his arrogance. 

but you and Cliff are right as well though, i am done checking in mmafighting. they are the worst, by far. I am not sure exactly what point they decided to go more TMZ, etc., but beside Al-Shauti there isn't really anything there of interest.

it has looked like Ben doesn't even want to be there. Chandler is just dominating every aspect of it and Benson just seems disinterested

ETA: well seems just a real slow start for him.

I've got them in my RSS feed. Rarely do I get beyond the headline. 95% is junk. Only good for announcements/injuries. Goes for Bloody Elbow as well. 

Maybe his shtick isn't as played out for me as I don't watch the conference calls/interviews/weighins. I hated Sonnen's #### but love McGregor's. When Sonnen was going strong I took in a ton more extra stuff than I do now. And I loved Silva so...

 
:lmao:  Complete crickets in the Bader main event. Looked like 10 people there. I really don't get having these meh cards ending at 3am there. New ownership appears to be putting UFC with more domestic focus as they aren't making jack internationally. Tonight's the first night it really stood out as far as why. Man that was just depressing. I'm sure they may have future dates there but not a good look for UFC at all tonight.

Didn't help that no one at all cared about Bader/Nog 2 in the first place, or that the crowd favorite got clowned nearly from start to finish.

And yeah, the fact that the fight ended around 3:15AM didn't help either, as usual. This end of the year stretch is brutal for Brazilian fans, 'cause it's a three hour time difference due to daylight savings time and all.

I've been saying that about Henderson since he came over to the UFC from the WEC. Still a fun guy to watch and obviously hard to argue with his UFC results, but he's always just been too laid back in there IMO and content to go to the scorecards.

Another fantastic knockout would've made him the most entertaining guy second only to McGregor.

 
Speaking of TUF, did anyone watch the second fight last night?

The situation was this:

Full guard, guy on bottom uses the heel of his foot to kick the lower back of guy on top in kind of a short chopping motion.  Big John was reffing the fight and immediately told the guy on the bottom to stop it.

Is there some rule (new?) that precludes this?  I seem to remember this being common, even if it always seemed a bit ineffectual.
