UK to get another NFL game in 2008 (1 Viewer)

LONDON (Reuters) - The National Football League announced on Thursday it would stage another regular season game in Britain this year following the success of last October's inaugural game in London.

More than 81,000 fans saw the New York Giants beat the Miami Dolphins 13-10 at Wembley Stadium in the first ever regular season game played outside North America.

The NFL received requests for more than half a million tickets within 72 hours of announcing the event.

"The game in London was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the entire 2007 season," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement on Thursday.

"The fan interest was tremendous. The passion they demonstrated for our sport that day continued throughout the season, as television viewership in the UK has grown by 40 percent since the game.

"We had an overwhelmingly positive response to the event from all involved -- the teams, our sponsors and business partners and of course the fans themselves. We look forward to another spectacular event in 2008."

The only drawback to the day was the weather as it rained heavily.

The Wembley pitch had not fully recovered by the time England played their final Euro 2008 qualifying match against Croatia three weeks later.

Details about this year's game, including the venue and the competing teams, are expected to be announced before Super Bowl XLII in Phoenix, Arizona on Feb 3.

Bracing myself for the outcry already. I know most fans will be livid if their team has to come over and play a "home" game over here. For the fans over here, it's just fantastic though., and those US fans who came over last time seemed to have a blast.

Well none of the fans here thought that way. Maybe he should move the whole league over there and see where it gets him

They moved the game to Phoenix? :D Where are they going to play, Chase Field? :lmao: I hope they announce this more widely, as a lot of fans are going to be upset when they show up at Cardinal Stadium in Glendale and there's no game going on. :lmao:

Smart business move on Goodell's part IMO. Seeing the viewership grow 40% can only mean good things for the NFL as a business and while most fantasy players and American fans won't be happy, Goodell seems to understand the concept of growing globally too.

Seems odd that they're only saying the game will be in Britain and not speficially London or Wembley again.

Wonder if they'll play this year's game in Scotland or maybe Old Trafford

ETA - The Millenium Stadium in Cardiff is possible too

Yeah, yeah, and the Cowboys don't play in Dallas, and the Jets and Giants don't play in NY. I believe Lambeau is not in GB either. I am sure there are more.

Don't the Redskins play in Maryland?

:lmao: American fans won't be happy, but they're not going to do anything besides complain. You're not going to lose fans because one game per year is played overseas. What's surprising to me though is that they aren't playing a game in Germany. NFL Europe ended up moving most of its teams there. Seems like that would be the hotter market to strike.

I like having games overseas since it's good for the game. At least send decent teams though - maybe even the SB champ.

I'm pretty sure that their stadium is in New England.

I don't get why people have such a problem with this.
Because your favorite team has a chance to lose a home game which ultimately could cost a playoff spot.
 Not a good enough reason.
It is a good enough reason! What if all the games were played in Europe would you still follow the game. I wouldn't, I may be in the minority but I like going to the games.
But all the games AREN'T gonna be played in Europe. It's smart marketing; something the NFL is very good at. It's a business, first and foremost (like it or not). Not everyone's gonna be happy with every move they make.

This is not going away guys...in fact, it is only going to expand.

The NFL's goals are:

- To have 1 home game PER TEAM per year outside the US

- To get approval from NFLPA for the above by agreeing to expand rosters

They are thinking big...

I enjoy watching the games in high def in the comfort of my home rather than being at the game. The NFL playing outside the US is fine by me. Also a smart business move by the NFL since Euro currencies are worth more than the once almighty dollar.

The NFL, if they are serious about this, just needs to go all out. Shorten the pre-season to 3 games. Add one regular season interconference neutral-site game for every team to be played week one. Then scatter these 16 games all over the globe week one and start the regular season as we know it week 2.

The counter-argument is that it hasn't seemed to hurt the Giants.

Yeah, but it sure ruined the Dolphins' season!

I just love this strategy. Its so low risk for them. They hardly invest anything; make money and work to expand the market. Much better then diving in full tilt and throwing money at NFL Europe. They need to generate interest in the game and get Europeans to play the game for fun if its ever going to get a foothold over there. Seeing it played at a high level is a good way to accomplish that, all they need is to get lucky with the good game part.

Goodell just doesn't get it. People don't want to see the game internationalized.
Why wouldn't they? If you think there’s ever going to be an NFL team in Europe I think you’re mistaken. The logistics would be to difficult to overcome. A new NFL Europe after they've been softened up to the idea is more likely the plan. Why wouldn't you want to try and take advantage of the wealth of athletic ability of a whole other continent?

Only the ones who don't understand the concept of a suburb.

If the UK or Europe had enough interest then they would have a team, logistics or not. Why not just have them play two or three home games in a row before traveling to the U.S. Somehow they've figured out international logistics in soccer.
