Ultimate Survivor - Leg 1 - League 3 (1 Viewer)

Chaos Commish

Footballguy
League 3 - Tuesday, July 22nd - 8:30 PM Eastern (league is full)

Staff entrants: David Dodds, Maurile Tremblay

Message Board Entrants: Worm, Shipshewana Psychos, Denver90, footballman_696969, renesauz, Unlucky, eric rymer, Sweeper, Chaos Commish, wikkidpissah

Auction/Perf (4 pt pass TDs, 6 pt rush/receive TDs, 1/20, 1/10)

Start 1 QB, 2RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 flex (RB/WR/TE), 1 PK, 1 Def

Best Ball
I'd like to claim a spot in league 3 before it fills. If it's too late then the other auction is my preference.
Whew, that's a tough league.
You can't run with the big dogs if you pee like a puppy. :goodposting: We still need need one more, but I wanted to get this thread started. In PMs I asked Clayton how the auction was going to be set up because I have had bad luck with Fantasy Auctioneer, yet I suspect that's how we're going to go. I was hesitant to join if so, but then I saw the available spots falling before I got an answer, so I jumped in before it filled. Clayton emailed Dodds for the info but I joined without hearing back and still haven't.

So... how are we going to do this?

To be clear, "I" have had very minor issues, personally, with Fantasy Auctioneer. Other members of leagues have struggled terribly during every "serious" auction I have done there (5), and even in a few mocks (Radballs and few FBGs I'm sure will recall the issues). These issues hurt the integrity of the league, stir up a bit of controversy and even create some unfortunate anger . So, if I'm right and this auction is going to be there, a week from today :goodposting: , then I figured we better get started fixing anyone with little issues. I have done several mocks with people familiar with the site that were smooth.

Though he'll probably whoop us all anyway, I know renesauz is a little new to auctions. Anyone else?

Jason Wood says the auction setup at ESPN is the way to go, but I have never tried it. Can someone take a look at it and see if this can run there?

Looking at the names in this league, this thing is going to be brutal to try and advance.

Interesting. This is undecided. I will check out espn tonight. I wonder why Jason says it's the way to go. A testimony would be comforting considering I didn't even know they supported live auctions. Just to be clear, Fantasy Auctioneer can support this if everyone spends a little time there and makes sure the site is working properly for them. Iirc, Firefox was much more stable than IE there. Most of the many mocks I've done there have been great fun and glitch free.

My understanding is the auction app at ESPN is new this year, but Jason raved about how well it worked. If no one looks at this before the weekend, I will test it out then. I like Auctioneer too, but it definitely hangs for a lot of people (usually can run well if you turn off other apps, close firewalls and virus protection, etc). But if ESPN has something better, I think that would likely make more sense.

I've been trying to join an espn mock or live auction since last night, but they haven't had one. I haven't found a way to test the system, but I will keep trying. I suspect I am going to have to create a mock or a league and try to fill it just to see how it works.

I took a year off auctions and now I'm back with a vengeance. I love the fact that ANY player can be had in an auction.Good luck boys.... You will need it. :X

I've used Fantasy Auctioneer with plenty of success over the past few years, but also a few problems when the site gets overloaded late in the pre-season.

One thing I like about FA is that you can adjust the values of the players, so if you do get booted, the computer will do a good job getting the players you want for you.

When it's working, it's a great auction application.

I'm OK with whatever we do, but I'm a bit pinched for time. I just had to sign up for this league.

I would like to start earlier if possible, but I totally understand if we can't. An extra hour earlier would be great for me.

Sorry CC, I won't be available tomorrow night to help with this.

I did check out a mock today with some random people and it seemed to run pretty smooth.

One of the guys that was drafting was complaining that his connection kept dropping. I'm assuming that was on his end.

Take this comment for what it's worth because I've never used FA before.

If I get a chance I'll try to check out a mock there too.

Everyone should do this to at least be familiar with the two interfaces. I don't know exactly what happened to the league I created, but somebody found it and joined. I also jumped in one of the many mocks. There were only two of us and the computer but it worked okay. I'm more familiar with Auctioneer and would need to see a larger group of real bidders at ESPN to know which I prefer.

The ESPN doesn't seem to work with my firefox. Working good with IE. It is pretty nice, but I'll need to do FA to compare.

So do people have a preference between FantasyAuctioneer and ESPN-Auction? Note that we will just auction at one of these places and then load the league up at MyFantasyLeague.com to track it.

I wouldn't have it any other way! :kicksrock:

ESPN: worked just fine with Firefox, but I don't have Firefox 3.0. Audio gets annoying quickly, but can be turned off. The bidding times are good: 30 sec. to nominate and 30 to bid, and resets to 10 seconds if the bid is upped. The biggest downside to me is that the nomination order goes through the same direction each time, rather than serpentine like a draft. Auctions become draft-like late, so this is a major advantage to the teams nominating first. The other downside is the lack of ability to correct errors or change the bidding/nominating times. Perhaps this can be done with a league commissioner, but I'm just not sure.

I still prefer Fantasy Auctioneer. You can set prices for guys in case you get booted, the commish can roll back individual players or a group of player to be re-bid on if an error happens, etc. As long as everyone tries out FA and feels that it works, I think it's still the better product. This early in the year, we won't have any server load issues at FA.

If we go the ESPN Route, we have to start on the hour. It looks like you can't alter the length of the nominating and bid times.

I'm going to commish an auction at ESPN tonight and will try to answer all of Unlucky's questions about commish control. I suspect ESPN has most of this covered. Right now I am leaning FA mostly out of familiarity. I strongly encourage anyone unfamiliar with these sites to make a small effort to change that before Tuesday.

You can set prices at ESPN, but everything else you say is correct. The commish is very limited. Actually, he's just another league member at the mercy of the software, which works fine. I like the look and feel of the interface better than FA, but I don't like the limitations. I prefer FA and hope you and David are right about server loads being the primary problem. A Tuesday in July should solve that. Fantasy Auctioneer gets my vote, if we're voting that is. Just the ability to stop the auction and reset in case of error is enough to sway me. But I also like the ability to speed things up just a little near the end, or slow things down if someone is struggling. ESPN gives you a five minute break mid-auction and that's fine, but the ability to stop and start the auction manually is much better. AND, if I get the same team in this thing as I just got there, well... I'll be moving on up.

After checking out ESPN-Auction, I'm almost certain that we'll use Fantasy Auctioneer due to most of the issues raised by you guys. I'll get the FA site set up later tonight.

It looks like we will auction in a private chat room that I will moderate. More details via PMs.

Why?
Exactly. This is guaranteed to be slower and more of a hassle than Fantasy Auctioneer. I've read of nobody in here with negatives about FA. Additionally, everyone can adjust their prices in FA and the computer does a really good job of getting the guys you want (bump up their value) and avoiding guys you don't want (guys that you've dropped significantly in value) if your computer screws up and you can't get into the auction application.

I'm also wondering what the particular problems were with FA that made us switch to a chat room. Is there a particular requirement that we need that FA can't handle?

I am fine with FA. I do know that almost every time we have ever used it though, someone has issues. These issues are known:

Mac - Need to use Safari and not Firefox

PC - Works best with Firefox

Certain firewalls and virus protection have to be shiut down or you will experience major lag (Trend Micro for certain and others too)

Clayton made this decision as Auctioneer would never send back a password when he requested it from the system. So if anyone has used FA before, make sure you know your password. I guessed mine after 5 tries. They still have not emailed it to me.

I will let Clayton know we will use FA. Not going to tolerate any complaining though if someone has lag issues, misses a player, etc because they have not read all of their FAQs concerning the myriad of software that messes with their java-based app.

FWIW NFFC has used FA for several years - with the same problems but stayed there because there were no BETTER alternavies.

One issue is the browser as DD notes above.

The other extremely irritating feature is it accepting bids after "sold" and the clock just moves around for another time period.

The other thing that trashed an NFFC draft was that some drafters were just "frozen" and had to log out and back in - resulting in bad bidding on some players and them not being able to bid on an interim player.

All that said, I think it is the best available - if nothing else for the commish control.

Personally (and I am in League 12 and not this one) I have no problem doing it in a chat room as long as there is an Auctioneer who is not in the league....but it will also be a lot more work to track all the rosters and available funds during the auction.

Everyone should have received an e-mail from FantasyAuctioneer. Please let me know if you have not.

PS - I hate auctions.

So I have to download a new browser in order to do a draft????

Do what you want, but I have seen people using IE have huge problems with this software.

Well, you should have both browsers anyway. :wall: I just ran the test at FA with IE and it was every bit as stable as Firefox. Ymmv.

Absolutely. This is why it's so important for people to adjust the player values - if they do get booted, the computer will bid up to the values they have listed. It takes all of 5 or 10 minutes to adjust the values.

I'm in.

One more thing to add: DON'T try to open the auction app from two different computers at the same time. (logged in as the same person) That will definitely freeze it.

Agreed. No whining. Everyone has been warned for almost a week. I have had almost no issues, personally, with Fantasy Auctioneer. It's always someone else, and it's usually someone who didn't prepare. If you have big issues then that just makes advancing easier for me; so it's on you, and I don't care. :lmao:IN! :lmao:

Logged in, tested, etc.

Even tried a mock draft (although 10 teams were computer controlled), with no issues at all (That is unless you count not realizing it was a $100 cap until AFTER I spent $78 aquiring both LT and ADP!)

Running with IE.

Just a note on this since I reported IE being stable in a simple test. When I say my issues at FA have been minor, those issues all involved IE. I have completed a few auctions successfully using IE. Italics because I was booted a few times and had to jump back in, the clock did hang on me and I have missed a player or two, which is an odd experience. I even got a "partial" screen once solved by logging out and in. These were insignificant compared to what others endured. Missing a couple minutes to quickly log back in and reload the java ap, or seeing the thing freeze for several seconds a few times, has never really hurt my teams as none of the players involved were targets. However, others had much bigger issues. Switching to Firefox solved everything for me and others. I use Firefox almost exclusively now and intalled it because of Fantasy Auctioneer a few years ago. Still some using Firefox have reported problems. All I'm saying is you can download and install Firefox in a few minutes and have better insurance this will go smoothly for you, or you can risk it and hopefully have no problems.

I went in to input my cheat sheet, and then saved it. But when I went back in, my values were gone and replaced by the original ones they had in there.

Any ideas?

Bump for help on this?
Just double checking what you did. You clicked on My Auctions. You clicked on this league. You clicked on Set A.I. This opened a new window with a java applet. In that window was FA's values for all players. You clicked on the players values and adjusted them. Then you clicked Save List in that applet. Then you closed it and went back to the league page, clicked save, then clicked Set A.I again. That opened the applet back up and your new values did not take? I did that yesterday and didn't check til just now, but all is fine on my list. If you opened the applet by clicking on Input Cheatsheet, that should make no difference. But maybe you missed one of the two saves?

did the same thing last night. I had no problems at all. I was mildly surprised how fast it went last night though.

FYI - Kicker scoring

1 point for each PAT

3 points for each FG plus 0.1 point for every yard past 30

Example: a 42-yard FG would be 4.2 points
