**UNCONFIRMED** Deion Branch Returning? (1 Viewer)

Deion Branch, WR NE

News: According to an unconfirmed source, CBS SportsLine.com has learned that WR Deion Branch, holding out of Patriots camp, is planning a return to the team within a week. The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity but does have knowledge of the situation, says Branch wants to "pull a T.O." and do whatever it takes to force the team to trade him, release him or not franchise tag him. Branch is in the final year of his contract, which pays him a little over $1 million -- a bargain considering the salaries of players around the league with a profile as high as Branch. The Patriots recently gave Branch time to seek a trade with another club, but as of now no trade is expected to happen.

Branch wants to pull a "TO" - would love to see how fast Belicheck deactivates him.

The new CBA will not allow this anymore so Branch will have to be traded or cut.

Belicheck might just not play him the entire season to make an example of him.

No chance Branch pulls a TO. He will come back to the Pats and sign the reasonable contract they offered him. He has gone through this whole process with far to much class to expect that he will start emulating the biggest horses *** in the game.

Unlike the Eagles last year where the locker room was divided by pro McNabb and pro T.O. groups the Pats have no issues between star qb and star wr. If Branch returned the leaders on the team would not allow him to be a distraction as they are unified. There is no comparison between the two situations.

You don't think that the players are pissed that nobody on the team gets paid when it comes contract time? Might not be a divide between players but I could see one between players and coach/gm.

A generalization that's false. Seymour and Brady are among the highest paid players in the NFL and both received new contracts before their current deal expired. AV was the highest paid kicker for two years. Light, Dillon, Harrison and Vrabel have all received healthy extensions and Colvin signed a preety nice deal in free agency. The Pats have let some players walk in the past (Woody, Law, Givens, Milloy and AV) but to say they have not stepped up to pay the players they feel worthy is just not true. You don't win three titles and still have a very healthy salary situation without making some tough and cold decisions...and as long as you draft well you can continue this business model and remain successful.

Does Branch really have any other choice than to return? Seems to me he has little leverage in this situation.
Oh, he's going to return. But when he returns is another question. Aside from his $66,000 game checks, what's Deion's motivation to return before week 10?This has been covered by more knowledgeable people than me in othe threads, but I will say that his leverage maybe has yet to be decided. It depends how the Pats pass game looks early in the season.

Clearly just a rumor to get Brett Favre to retire before the regular season
Another one of your jokes....getting closer to that "Ignore" list (where the next person added will be the first).
No offense, but why does anyone care who's on your ignore list?

I have a hard time believing that Branch would "pull a TO" and do that much damage his value as an unrestricted free agent after this season.

I also have a hard time believing that Branch would do something like that, just based on the relationships he has with his teammates.

Ask Terry Glenn how Bill Belichick handles problematic WRs.

Don't know what the Pats will do with Branch should he return, but if I were Coach B, I'd just sit him the entire season or just play him sparingly.

 He's the best receiver on the team, easily. And I have full confidence that once (if) he reports, he will go back to being the consummate professional. I see no reason whatsoever to use him only sparingly.

I don't think the Patriots would punish Branch like that. Coach Nolan for the 49ers said recently in regard to the Patriots letting Branch seek a trade, "They're trying to give the player a taste of reality". That reality being that nobody is going to pay him what he is asking for.

That may be true. On the other hand teams know that they will have to pay Branch AND come up with a trade proposal that NE will accept. Take away the trade aspect and there would likely be suitors for Branch.

If Branch returns, he is not going to pull a TO. But I do think he will be less willing to play through any minor injury, that risk is very real.

I think he will give a good account for himself when healthy though.

There's another thread on this, where some of us thought this could actually be a typo,, i.e. he would NOT pull a TO. He really can't afford to as he is not as good. TO's talent is the only thing that allows him to get traded despite his wreck-a-team MO.

This is not surprising, local radio said that the Pats want a #1 for Branch and Branch wants more than 6mil a year, who in their right mind would pay such a price.

I'm afraid the Vikings might. We'll make due without Branch in that scenario, but it would be better if he comes back.
