University bans phrases 'man up' as 'offensive'... (1 Viewer)

“I’m a little concerned about censoring a phrase like ‘man up’… a world without manliness, like a world without femininity… would be a pretty dismal place,” Hendrickson said.

"But as the campaign has gained national popularity, its detractors have bristled at the effort, calling it a politically correct war on words that will stifle free speech and suggesting its true aim is to redefine terms to control public opinion and – ultimately – public policy."

Obviously most of these complaints are stupid, but they actually have a point using "gay" as a general pejorative. I'm not particularly gay-friendly and even I cringe a little when I hear that used in conversation.

:goodposting: A lot of those - particularly the "man up" - seem like newspeak.

I don't see where they banned anything. All I see is an ad campaign suggesting these terms are offensive to some people.

So how soon will these be added to the FBG language filter. Seems like a couple phrases have slipped through the cracks here. We need to tighten up the ship.

I'm confused by the weird "offended by ad campaigns" shtick from some people who identify as conservatives. "Drawing attention to us offending people is censorship" is something I never would have thought up.

Can the usual folks still act outraged, though?
It appears that they can.
And will
This is definitely something to be outraged about , you don't agree ?
An ad that asks people to not use certain phrases? No not really. Now if they did an outright ban with some kind of enforcement mechanism then yes that is ridiculous and I would be against it. But they aren't. And really when you look around it's already happening. Using sexual orientation as a slur is out already. I mean as IK said he isn't Mr. Gay Agenda but he cringes at gay used as a pejorative.

doing that is a process and what we are witnessing now is the first part of the process, so if you are really against that you should be outraged now before its too late.

And luckily, we have Dartmouth helping save Cinco de Mayo from becoming a drinking holiday.
Sounds like they weren't going for drinking really. The drinks were virgin right and it was for charity? Personally not seeing the problem and I likely wouldn't have cancelled. One person getting their knickers in a twist doesn't sway me much.

No I try to save my outrage for things that are actually happening not things that haven't happened. You know like children going without food because the richest empire to ever exist "can't afford" to feed them.

“There are various problematic structures and ideologies regarding a Cinco de Mayo-inspired event, and I am sure that we, as a Dartmouth community, could learn from the extensive literature written about the Americanization of Cinco de Mayo and its construction as a drinking holiday in the United States, cultural appropriation and the inappropriate usage of cultural clothing, and the exploitation of groups of people and cultures for the sake of business opportunities,” Hernandez said in an email to The Dartmouth.

Someone somewhere will be offended by something someone said...get over it. Grow a pair of whatever pair of things you think will not make you so offended easily

Well that is how it is constructed in many places. But did you read the menu that was planned?

I really don't see the problem with Cinco de Mayo.

Like on so many occasions, Americans have turned into an reason to drink and spend money. Even better is that it's not even a day that's a big deal in Mexico, so it's not like we're bastardizing an important Mexican holiday.

It's a day where Americans waltz into restaurants with bastardized Mexican food that are owned by and employee many Mexican-Americans and spend a bunch of money. The celebration is largely pushed by these restaurants and a beer brand brewed in Mexico.

Just like selling fancy queso dip that's just american pastuerized process cheese food, it's a brilliant business move.

If it's the sombrero's that are the problem, those aren't limited to Cinco de Mayo. They were around and tasteless well before Cinco de Mayo got big.

this applies to some people here

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

First they suggested that something I was saying was somewhat offensive.

Then I beat them to death for being socialists.

This can't be considered anything other than a troll. If you don't understand why I posted it here and who its referring to you can just simply ask.

When they came for me, I ran like a thief, right into Grand Central. They trapped me in a pay toilet. It cost them 4 dollars in nickels to get me out. -Corporal Klinger

No one has come for anyone. No one has banned anything. An ad campaign to make people aware that some people are offended by certain terms came out at a college.

Your thread title is inaccurate and incendiary. As is your rhetoric inside the thread.

Hey, if you want me to explain it to you, just ask, otherwise stop trolling/attempting to derail a thread you don't like.

Sorry you were victimized yet again johnjohn. The cumulative effects seem like they've really damaged you.

Maybe you should get some professional help instead of using FBGs message boards for therapy though?

Reminds me of the kid that just got trapped in the quarter toy claw machine.

What is there to explain? Your title is a lie, your suppositions are wild flights of conservative victim fantasy and the whole thing is just something WND trumpets for the yokels.
