University bans phrases 'man up' as 'offensive'... (1 Viewer)

First they suggested that something I was saying was somewhat offensive.

Then I beat them to death for being socialists.
This can't be considered anything other than a troll. If you don't understand why I posted it here and who its referring to you can just simply ask.
No one has come for anyone. No one has banned anything. An ad campaign to make people aware that some people are offended by certain terms came out at a college.

Your thread title is inaccurate and incendiary. As is your rhetoric inside the thread.
Hey, if you want me to explain it to you, just ask, otherwise stop trolling/attempting to derail a thread you don't like.
I did.

I don't see where they banned anything. All I see is an ad campaign suggesting these terms are offensive to some people.
figure it out, http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ban?s=t
You're using it in the archaic sense of "cursing" the word?

I am referring to the quote i posted, the link I gave you is more than enough of an explanation to your question

Agreed. False and misleading thread title needs to be changed. If the OP refuses to do this, then the thread should be locked IMO.

This can still be a productive place to discuss which misogynist phrases to describe toughness and stick-to-it-ivness are currently en vogue and which are to be retired.

Joe, if you are out there, why are you locking threads yet allowing someone who consistently contributes nothing but troll threads to stick around? Save your mods the trouble and just eliminate the source.

Maybe the calls are coming from inside the house.

I think one of these threads were locked yesterday.

Idk, whats more ridiculous being offended by someone saying man up or someone using the word bossy....

I dont like where this is heading at all....

And yet you're still free to say "bossy" and "man up". Just because there are grass-roots campaigns to bring awareness doesn't prevent you from using the terms.

And yes, your thread title is misleading, bordering on fishing.

once again, learn your words before making ignorant accusations http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ban?s=t

Also, just because it isn't against the law to use those words yet doesn't mean it isn't painfully obvious that is the direction we are heading in.

What came from the study will likely surprise no one: people who like to troll are also likely to show signs of “sadism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism.”

Those three character flaws make up the ominous “Dark Tetrad of personality.” Sadism means delighting in the harm of others, psychopathy is an antisocial personality disorder, and Machiavellianism means a person’s tendency to be unemotional and deceitful. Trolls seem to have all three on lock.

Can you copy and paste the part of your linked article that uses the word "banned". TIA.

"science is a smorgasbord, and google will guide you to the study that's right for you"

Joe's moderating has never been about consistency or fairness. Or fairness.

I'm offended by those who want to stop people from exercising their First Amendment rights to criticize the use of what they see as offensive terms.

The fact you are asking me that just shows you have no clue what im talking about and you should do more research on meanings of words before attacking someone like you have done.

I'm not attacking, just asking. Banning would imply there are repercussions for using it. Please tell me what the repercussions are. I'm saying I see nothing more than grass-roots movements. Please show otherwise. From your link:

“Language is a reflection of how we think about others and view the world,” Jay Sullivan, a student leader of the campaign, tells Duke Today. “My goal is to…. help facilitate discussion about how language affects many social issues, from race to gender and sexuality.”

The campaign consists of a series of black-and-white memes with students posing behind large pledges to avoid so-called offensive language.

Can you just do a simple copy/paste? I would appreciate it.
I believe in you, I believe you will be able to figure it out on your own from the link I posted
I can't. Please copy/paste where the University forbids the use of "man up". TIA.
oh no no, I am talking about the other link I gave you http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ban?s=t so you can understand how I was using the word ban, since you seem to have no idea

So you're using the Archaic definition? Do you know what Archaic means? Here's a link.

people are free to say whatever they want, AMERICA

unless, of course, they tell me i should not say something because it is offensive, then screw them tell! them to shut up in the name of AMERICA!!!

who is saying they don't have the freedom to say that ? I have the freedom to discuss my disgust over it though , don't I ? I have the freedom to discuss where I think this is heading, don't i ?

My point is its important to react with disgust to such nonsense to try and stop it from gaining momentum and eventually becoming a law that prohibits people from saying such words

Basically I am defending freedom right now

to prohibit, forbid, or bar; interdict: to ban nuclear weapons; The dictator banned all newspapers and books that criticized his regime.
Yeah none of that is happening. Further the reason they call a usage archaic is because no uses it that way anymore.

Obviously most of these complaints are stupid, but they actually have a point using "gay" as a general pejorative. I'm not particularly gay-friendly and even I cringe a little when I hear that used in conversation.
I think it's okay in certain contexts -- e.g., "OMG, lesbians are so gay."

I think I'm more offended that people won't stop replying to obvious trolls.
I'm interpreting this thread as an acknowledgment by johnjohn that we are free to tell him to man up and quit being a ##### and a ##### in all discourse with him from here on out. For that alone, this thread is pretty awesome.

So...they didn't ban anything...and its a private university so there is really no free speech issue anyway?

Damn it that pisses me off so much that someone didn't really do anything at all.

Im going to protest the government over this starting with an off topic board on a fantasy football site. That'll learn em.

I would go straight to the Bundy ranch. That's where "it's all happening"
