Unlimited Vacation time - the "new" trend? (1 Viewer)

That sucks, but my vote was for you to stay anyways.  I recently have been finally able to work for a guy I'd been trying to for 4 years, having a great manager makes such a big difference IMO.  Particularly with ambiguous vacation policies.
Having an awesome boss is priceless. It wasn't meant to be.

You can only collect on all the accrued days when you leave the company, right?

ETA: this is how the OP got the shaft from his current company IIRC.
I can cash some of them out each year at 100%. I've been doing that to manage the growth of my stockpile. I'm planning on burning a week of days off to fund my fall vegas trip

We have a "use it or loose it" vacation policy.  I wish I could cash some of it in or roll it over.  End up taking days off to do nothing.  My wife's company lets her cash in 40 hrs (at 100%) and/or you can roll 40 hrs to the next year.  That would be pretty nice.

How has this "unlimited" PTO policy worked out for your companies? Have employees been abusing the policy? Has it created drama?

My work is doing this effective 1/1 with PTO needing to be approved by your team and/or manager. We're getting paid for all accrued time as of 12/31. The time will be tracked and reviewed at year end so it doesn't sound like I can go ahead and get 50 days of PTO approved over the year but still...I guess it's cool I don't have to worry about how much I have accrued in order to plan my time off.

I have unlimited PTO and I'm sure I abuse the heck out of it. I don't have to request the time off, I just take it when needed. I mean, I tell my manager in advance if I'm taking a week of vacation but I there isn't a formal request. I took three one-week vacations this year. Actually four because I won't be working between Christmas and New Years. And then countless random half days or full days when I have something going on or a sick kid. Usually I don't even bother to even mention those to my manager. He doesn't ask so long as the work gets done.

When I worked for a company that switched to unlimited I ended up taking less time.
Before the switch I had 5 weeks with no carry over. Sometimes scrambled in November & December to use it up as I didn't have the money to go on more than 3 weeks of "real" vacation.

Once we switched to unlimited, I checked what I had used at the end of the year, and it was 3.5 weeks.
Tried to make sure I used more the next year and got up to 5. But had we stayed with use it or lose it I would have been collecting 6 weeks, so still a net loss. :kicksrock:

The company I started with in July started me with 4 weeks which is about right for what I need.
