It (republic) will use a proprietary (?) android phone that uses voip when wifi is available, otherwise the Sprint network. But its allegedly seamless autoswitching.

I'm shocked this is going to fly. Since carriers insist that you need to have a hard tower connection for a call, and not just a data pipe for all comms why would sprint open this pandoras box here?

You can do basically the same thing with ipod touches but only on wifi.

Only wifi is not close to the same thing. Its the same as half of it, but its the cheap half. Whether/why it would fly? I remember when long distance calls from Austin to Dallas were over $2 a minute on a landline. Now its hard not to get it for free or pennies a minute on virtually any phone. The only thing that changed was that the infrastructure was paid for and the monopolies were displaced and competition kept lowering the price. I do not know if that paradigm works here or not.

Because it sounds like broadband.com, or whatever they're called, has the patent on the wifi call technology and if Sprint doesn't get onboard somebody else will. I wish this was a publicly traded company.

I've always wanted internet on my phone. Me and the ol' lady will be switching from tracfone and net10.

i got my invite today. $99 for the phone on the new sign-up special, they say it will be $199 for those that did not sign up early.

Either way, that's much cheaper than I had anticipated.

How do you sign up? There's nothing on their weird website.

"Although a special phone is needed to join the network now, Dally didn't rule out the possibility of creating apps in the future that would allow any smartphone to access the system.

There are no contracts, termination fees or overage charges for usage.

Subscribers get unlimited voice, data and text on the WiFi portion of the service. The wireless portion of the service, though, is limited by a "fair use policy."

Those limits are calculated based on a ratio of WiFi to cellular usage. If zero percent of your usage was WiFi, for example, your monthly cellular usage would be limited to 400 minutes of talk, 600 MB of data and 200 texts. Those numbers would increase, however, as your WiFi usage increases."

Let me know how accurate the AutoSwitching statement is.If you initiate a call on your WIFI. I would like you to shut off the WIFI during the call (or walk out of range of the signal) and see if the call stays up on the IMS Platform. I would highly doubt that because the HLR has no idea of that established call so I don't understand how it can move over to the Cell Network seamlessly. I know for a FACT T-Mobile with its WI-FI calling feature if you lose wifi connectivity or go out of range the call drops.

charging for texts is the biggest scam going today
pretty much
not really a scam, but more like carriers not advancing with technology fast enough and charging you for it.text messages (SMS) don't act like a regular data send, they are built into the 1X network as a separate protocol. that has been changing to be more like any other data but it's a slow transition. kind of how voice is moving to VoIP (voice transmitted as data packets). carriers are charging for your texts because they use the legacy network.

Been trying and even got invitation, but unsuccessful signing up. They have been open twice and both times sold out before I got in.

Got an email telling me to reserve a wireless number, although I believe anyone can do this, but for some reason part of the number I requested was grayed out and part was red and when I hit "reserve now" nothing happened. Anyone know about this?

"Yesterday afternoon, Republic Wireless announced the elimination of all usage thresholds, effectively removing the quotations marks from 'unlimited.'"

Good for them! I've never been able to figure out how the major telcos get away with using the word "unlimited" to mean "limited". How is that not false advertising? It seems to me that people should be able to get out of their two year contracts if they signed up for an unlimited service that actually has data caps or even throttles the people that dare to use too much of the "unlimited" service they are paying for.
