Beta Waves FAQ

Getting in a Beta Wave... and what's next

What is a Beta Wave?

republic wireless launched back in November in "Beta Phase" (meaning we're still working with our users to continue testing many aspects of our service, phones and technology). Given the overwhelming demand to join republic, we've organized the invitation process into "Waves." We'll open the Waves in phases, starting this summer. When your Wave opens, you'll have the opportunity to purchase a republic phone.

How do I know if I'm on the list?

If you tried to purchase unsuccessfully back in November at launch or you signed up for an email list prior to April 13, you should have received an email from us letting you know that an invitation to join a Beta Wave would be coming soon. If you received an email (or if you signed up for an email list between April 13th and April 20th at 5 pm) you'll receive an invitation to join an upcoming Beta Wave.

What if I don't receive an email to join an upcoming Beta Wave?

If you're sure you haven't received an invitation from us (check your spam folder!), then you aren't on our list. To get on it, you need to visitrepublicwireless.com/join and sign up to receive email notifications from us. From time to time, we will invite people on our email lists to join a Beta Wave.

When and how do I need to respond?

When you receive the invitation by email, you'll visit our online reservation system and provide some basic info. You'll have a week to do this. If you don't reply in that period, we'll assume that you aren't interested in joining republic wireless and don't want your spot. If you miss the chance to claim the spot we saved for you, you can always sign up for a new one (in a later Wave, though).

How will I find out which Wave I'll be placed in?

Once you receive your invitation by email, you can visit our online reservation system. After providing a bit of basic info, we'll let you know which Beta Wave you're in, designated by a letter of the alphabet ("Wave B," for example). You'll receive a confirmation email to remind you of which Wave you're in.

Will I be able to purchase more than one phone? If so, how many?

Yes, each reservation invitation is good for ordering up to two phones. If you're a current member and you're interested in adding another line, see our "Info for current members" section below.

After I confirm my spot in a Wave, when can I purchase?

You'll receive an email with a private invitation to the store when it's time for your Wave to order. We'll publish the purchase dates for each Beta Wave, along with the date you can expect to receive your phone.

How are Waves assigned?

If you tried to place an order at launch and were unsuccessful, you'll be part of the very next Wave. If you signed up for an email newsletter, your Wave assignment will be based on the timestamp of when you signed up.

I haven't signed up yet--can I still get in a Wave?

You can register for email updates, but you won't be assigned to a Wave immediately. Visit republicwireless.com/join and sign up to receive email notifications from us. When a spot becomes available, you'll be assigned to a Beta Wave and invited by email to claim your spot in it.

Can I give my place in line to someone else?

No. The best way to make sure someone else gets a spot in one of the upcoming Beta Waves is by telling them to come and sign up for email notifications.

Phones and features

Will new phones be available for the next Wave?

Yes. We are planning for more than one phone option to be available this summer. All Beta Waves will have the same opportunity to choose between them. If you choose to order a phone that is out of stock at the time, we'll let you know and will ship your order as soon as stock is available.

How much will the phones cost?

Your phone and first month of service are both included in your startup fee. It's our goal to keep your Startup Fee as low as possible. When we launched in November, it was $199 and we plan to offer the same or a comparable price this summer for at least one phone option.

Which flavors of Android will be offered?

We'll be launching with Gingerbread. And of course, being Android geeks ourselves, we're playing with other flavors in the lab already.

Can I purchase a refurbished phone?

At launch or soon after, we plan to offer refurbished inventory for those interested as a way to keep your Startup Fee as low as possible. When we do offer refurbs, inventory will be limited.

Which apps come pre-installed?

The only pre-installed app we include is the Wi-Fi Wizard. Your phone will come with standard Android apps like Gmail, Calendar, etc. We don't include bloatware--it's your phone, so you decide what goes on it.

Will I be able to transfer an existing number to republic? When do I have to do that?

This is called porting, and you'll be able to do it when you place your order or any time after that. You'll be able to check to see if you can port your number when you're invited to join republic and pay your startup fee (we realize you might want to know this before you order). If you want to try republic before transferring your number, you can simply sign in to the My Account portal anytime to place your request to port whenever you're ready.

Service

Do I have to have Wi-Fi to use this phone?

Yes. Hybrid Calling relies on you being connected to Wi-Fi. We require that you sign into at least one Wi-Fi network when you first turn on your phone.

Will MMS be fixed for the upcoming Waves?

We know it is important for some people to be able to send picture messages directly to other phone numbers instead of sending them via email. Our ability to offer MMS functionality depends on a few key industry partners and we're working on it with them now.

Info for current members

Can I upgrade my phone for a newer model?

Not right away, but later this summer, yes. We have an upgrade path planned for existing members who wish to upgrade a device and will open it to you as soon as we can.

Can I purchase additional lines?

You'll be able to do this later this summer. We have a plan for adding lines and will open this as soon as we can.

I finally got my notice yesterday and bought two phones (500 dollars total) and this afternoon they arrived. I am charging them up now.

/psyched

Best of all, my current phone contract ends Tue.

The phone is a Motorola Defy XT.

I was in Beta Group (wave?) B

I'm shocked this is going to fly. Since carriers insist that you need to have a hard tower connection for a call, and not just a data pipe for all comms why would sprint open this pandoras box here? You can do basically the same thing with ipod touches but only on wifi.
Because it sounds like broadband.com, or whatever they're called, has the patent on the wifi call technology and if Sprint doesn't get onboard somebody else will. I wish this was a publicly traded company.
Since only Motorola makes compatible phones (at this point), I'm thinking I may BUY MOT

OK let me see if I got this, you'll either have to pay for a portable wi-fi device or get service only in areas where there is wi-fi? Unless I'm mistaken in that, is't that going to make it just as expensive as other services. or you wont have service when your out of the office or at your home Or say you stop at a restaurant or another hot spot. Isn't that kinda the point of a cell phone? Now I'm not one of those really tech guys that know all about this stuff so I'm probably talking out of my ###. But it seems like there could be some hidden fees here.

This is still in beta. Right now, you use Wi-fi when you are in range of a Wi-fi network you have access to. When you are not, you use Sprint, if Sprint is available. As of now, i do not believe they have put bandwidth limits in place, but you can be sure they will one day. I am thinking they are banking on growth of public Wi-fi networks. Bright House here in Orlando has them all over the place. If you are a member, you can access Wi-fi at a pretty wide area. so Republic is perfect for me, unfortunately, I am in Wave N.

As a second phone they may be okay, but the support (or complete absence) unreliable phones and dicey service make it way to unreliable for anything you can count on.For example, my service was so poor I HAD to get another provider for my business use. The catch? Once I port the number I lose my account and have to wait for another wave? They cannot issue me a number? wtf?I dropped my phone 2 feet onto carpet anf the screen cracked. Too bad enter another wave and order a phone Ridiculous. No contingency plans or backup when problems arise. basically if you have a problem, end the service and get back in line and wait another six month for that wave and hope the crap they send you this time is better than the last.Again, I do recommend it as a second phone, but take note of what it is and that is nothing you can rely on.On the other hand $19/mo for unltd voice text and internet is an unbelievable - just know what you are in for when you sign up. Do NOT port an important number. I ported my main business line that is in all my advertising, marketing, business cards, etc. and after a week, it still has not ported to the new provider. So I am using a scotch-taped up phone that people have trouble understanding me on, waiting for the number to port to a phone and provider I can rely upon.By the way- I am trying to port back to Straight Talk. $45/mo. ultd text and internet over the Verizon network (varies by ohone model), but they actually have customer service and technical support and no contract.

Thanks for the update, cosjobs. I was really interested in this but sounds like I may stick with virgin mobile until this is ready for prime time.

Joe Rogan has been hyping this cell company called Ting on his podcast. They kind of have an interesting thing going. They bill based on actual usage, not a monthly fee or any contracts. They borrow from the Sprint network.

Oh, and you can buy a Galaxy SIII to use with it. You can't port existing devices to the service yet, but that could happen in the future.

Based on my usage (450 talk, 750 text, 2.5 MB Data) I'm doing just fine with my $50/mo unlimited everything plan with Cspire. EDIT: Does look like a great deal for those who may only want 500 talk / 1000 text with no data though ($20).

Thanks for the update. Looking less incredible than it first seemed.

I guess you get what you pay for. Thanks for the review, Cosjobs.

So it's been over two years since the last post here. Has Republican Wireless gotten any better? Anybody out there happy with their phone?

Was with Republic for a few months this year. Was generally happy, though WiFi calling was a bit wonky. They are getting the latest Moto X next month. If Sprint works good in your area, it is worth it, IMO.

I switched because I love the OnePlus One and Consumer Cellular has the best customer service known to man.

I picked up a Moto G for my son and it has been great for his needs. Phone has good voice quality, unlimited texting, and restricts his data surfing until he is on WiFi. The plan we are on is $10, or $13 after taxes.

Good to hear. Moto G is what we're looking at.
