unloading an elite player for draft compensation (1 Viewer)

Keeper league, so I'm seeing what I can get in exchange for a 1st round caliber player not quite as locked in as my best player. How hard a bargain should I drive?

If I insist on my competitor's 1st round pick, I risk our deal dissolving and zero chance at recouping said player -- my pick is #12. But obviously if I settle for a late round pick in swap, my competitor significantly enhances his team at minimal benefit to me.

So ... more specifically, I'm planning to keep Zeke and hope to fetch something lucrative for Kamara in trade. The competitor I've opened discussions with has no top shelf RBs or receivers to speak of.

Do you lose the round your keeper was drafted in or is it just everyone keeps one guy with no draft pick loss?   What do trades like this usually net in this league?  I would think a first round pick seems reasonable for Kamara but then that leaves this guy with no pick until the send round.  Is it a snake draft?  Maybe offer up  your 2nd rounder and Kamara for his first rounder.  You get an upgrade in pick in a premium round and still keep your 1.12 pick.  Plus you get something for Kamara which is better than letting him go for nothing.

Like you said, I don't like the late round pick swap because that is basically useless.  Better to just let Kamara go to the draft out of principle there.

Very good points all.

There's no loss of round based on which player you keep or anything like that. Two or three trades leaguewide in a given year, competitors tending to keep it simple. Most of my competitors are more of the "put your best offer forward" type, meaning that if I ask for too lofty a draft pick a trade may not materialize.

If this is the case, why not put out a league wide note that you are going to trade Kamara to the team with the best offer.  See what comes in.
