I apologize for maybe getting to close to the political line here. I’m still pretty raw over this one. I personally feel like we lost a great American, and it’s going to bring more heartache, if anything. I get that others don’t feel the same. I will try to keep emotion out of it.

This was done for the New Zealand Christchurch shooter a few years back - at least by some including the NZ Prime Minister. I think it's a fantastic concept. It reduces the "fame" angle as possible motivation...but it also severely limits how much the media can report on, so it'll never happen in the U.S.

It’s true that people are rarely all one thing or another. The way we talk about public figures often flattens them into symbols for a “side,” when in reality they’re a mix of admirable traits and flaws, just like the rest of us. What complicates it with someone like Charlie Kirk is that his public voice was amplified to such a degree that the parts people disagreed with felt louder, sharper, and harder to ignore. Maybe part of the lesson here is that the way we elevate voices in politics has as much impact as the voices themselves.

I honestly don't know and am trying to figure out if this is standard or if this is unique to Charlie, and if so, is it personal proclivity and his own risk tolerance or is it because of credible threats?

This strikes me as pretty important. Not to find the killer. I'm never going to be able to help with that. But to assess where we really are as a culture and as a polis.

I don't know if Kirk has ever addressed why he wears one, but I think the reason is fairly obvious. There are crazy people in this world and he engages in a style of debate that can be emotional and triggering to some. Steven Crowder does a man on campus thing as well and said he has been assaulted on campus before and feared for his own safety. We've become less tolerant as a society over other points of view and that's an all-sides issue.

Kirk had to hire private security for these events and I assume they highly encourage the BP vest. I think that's what makes it hard for someone in Kirk's position. He isn't a government official. If he receives a threat, who is looking into how credible that is? The police aren't going to spend much time on that. If someone threatens a government official, its more often not thoroughly investigated.

I listen to more conservative brands of podcasts and they've echo the fears. Some have been SWAT'd and received death threats. I don't want to derail the thread but I think this is an important conversation we should be having as a community.

less tolerant is an under statement. having a 2 party system worsens the situation and our sheep mentality puts the nail in the coffin. one day after remembering 9/11 and for a moment how the country finally looked at itself as 1 nation instead of the divided states of america makes me wonder if we can ever ramp down the rhetoric in the technology age. so many people, hidden behind keyboards become warriors, spreading filth and hate. you can’t even steal a baseball from a kid at a game anymore, lol. the US needs a relevant 3rd party (more would be great) where people can’t be easily labeled. i can’t explain to anyone in the states anymore that i don’t like the president, but i don’t mind some policies and i more concerned with the economics of everything. it’s almost as if you are forced to pick a side and be labeled a conservative or a liberal. i thought biden was way too old and he looked slower than rodgers in the pocket. we or i need something that meets somewhere in the middle. centric. perot was the closet thing we might have and he couldn’t generate any senate nor congressional seats. people have become more emboldened to do horrible things. ultimately, they want us divided and we are too blind to see it.

Yep. I don't have a team not sure how you can. Each side policies keep changing and creeping towards the edges and I find it hard to believe you can support everything one side does.

We as a nation need to stop the rhetoric, stop giving prominent voices to fringes of society. It's terrible the way we label each other, it's terrible people are be murdered just because of their political affiliation. It's insanity, we are hating other Americans citizens because they are team red or blue

What happened in Minnesota and what happened here should be condemned by all Americans. But depending on your team, you downplay and joke about one but are horrified by the other.

Charlie Kirk was one of the good ones. And he was loved, and cherished by A LOT of people. I would encourage those who just think he was a self promoting right wing activist to dig a little deeper.

This is why I’m so interested to find out the shooters motive. My two theories:
1) he wanted to “stir the pot”….which this will do, and then some.
2) he wanted to take out someone who is reaching the hearts, and minds of young people in a way that, in his mind had to be stopped.

There was very clearly several sides to Kirk. We'd all be wise to look at him in his entirety. It does no good to cherry pick the things we love/hate and focus just on those. People are complicated. If we want to show we have a modicum of integrity, we need to admit he's somewhere on the the scale between "saint" and "devil". These are constructs the "sides" have created. It's not either/or. It's almost always, both/and.

There are zero perfect humans.

Right. And we do society a severe injustice if we ignore the imperfections. This is what intellectually dishonest people do. So while I agree with your statement that people need to look closer at Kirk, that includes those trying to paint him in the best light possible as well as those trying to paint him in the worst light possible.

By every measure possible Charlie Kirk was an exemplary citizen. What crimes did he commit? Did he abandon his children? Did he not pay his taxes? Was he trying to undermine the united states? Did he not approach his political agenda the right way...by talking to people?

This idea of "well we need to understand he wasn't perfect" in the context of getting murdered is a terrible statement of relativity. He said mean words, or had ideas I don't agree with does not make someone "in between" or "it's complex".

He was a model citizen. There's no "understanding" to this, its black and white.

No, I'm actually not letting this go. This is smuggling in politics to this. I'm thrilled they caught him. His father turned him in. The FBI, I believe, had two separate men in custody and they were wrong about both men. I just won't let you do that. The head of the FBI took a bashing from almost everybody who had previously worked there that didn't anymore.
