Some major tweaks in this version.

Orginal top-ten from February

==============

1. Carolina - DT Nick Farley

2. Denver - DE Da Quan Bowers

3. Buffalo - CB Patrick Paterson

4. Cincinnati - WR A.J. Green

5. Arizona - LB Von Miller

6. **trade** Cleveland trades down with Washington**Washington - QB Cam Newton

7. San Francisco - QB Blaine Gabbert

8. Tennessee - DE/DT Marcell Dereus

9. Dallas - CB Pince Akumara

10. **trade** Cleveland w/Washington - DE Robert Quinn

Updated top-ten list on March 5th

==============

1. Carolina - DE/DT Marcell Dereus

The Combine hurt Fairley's value. Peter King swears he has fallen. On the other hand Dereus had a great combine and the raw numbers show him being 20 lbs heavier and having a quicker short-shuttle, i.e., explosion off the snap than Fairley. All signs point to him being a 'safer' pick and rising up draft boards so I moved him in to the top slot.

2. Denver - DE Da Quan Bowers

I stick with Bowers going to Denver.

3. Buffalo - LB Von Miller

I've come around on Von Miller having big time pass rush game.

4. Cincinnati - CB Patrick Paterson

No corner has ever gone with the first pick before so I don't see it.

5. Arizona - QB Blaine Gabbert

Cam raised enough questions that his stock dropped. Comparatively Gabbert's stock rose and I think if Miller is off the board that Arizona will go QB and nab Gabbert.

6. Cleveland - WR A.J. Green

Green has done nothing wrong but is nudged down due to Gabbert getting taken higher.

7. San Francisco - DE/OLB Robert Quinn

Quinn's is a pass rushing force who projects as an OLB ALA DeMarcus Ware and that could work in his favor rather than having to play up on the LOS because I think he's weak against the run and he could fit better if he doesn't have to directly take on blockers every snap.

8. Tennessee - DT Nick Farley

Fairely could go much higher, even back to #1 but if he gets passed on the top three picks then he could slide all the way down to the 8th pick.

9. Dallas - CB Pince Akumara

Prince to Dallas still seems a good fit to me.

10. Washington - QB Cam Newton

Cam is at least one year away from transfering his raw incredible athletic skills into being a legit starter. I don't feel he's ready to plug and play and that he needs a solid offensive QB guru like Shanahan to, coach, mentor, ride him into growing into his potential.

Latest update March 31st

1. Carolina – QB Cam Newton

The reasoning fits into a classic decision-box. If I’m the new Lina head coach I wouldn’t bet my NFL career on Jimmy Clausen but I don’t want to spend the first pick on a guy like Cam so I first look to NFL free agency but I can’t count on landing anyone in free agency with the NFL blocking that path. Second I look at a possible trade but once again I am blocked by the NFL labor issue. Third I would prefer to get a guy who drops into the second round and use the top pick on a sure-fire D-lineman like Dareus but the previous regime traded away that pick so I’m limited to looking at the top QB from this draft. Why Cam Netwon over Blaine Gabbert? The Panthers reportedly have been all over Newton. They would prefer to trade down and pick up extra picks but at the end of the day nobody is trading up to the top pick so they take Newton and use Clausen for as long as they can becuase its going to take Newton a good year till he's ready to perminently move under center.

2. Denver – DT Marcell Dareus

The Broncos are sure to kick the tires on Bowers and Pat Peterson but Dareus is something they haven't seen since Trevor Pryce was in his prime, a D-Lineman who can play the run and generate a pass rush from the inside. Marcell has no charector issues and he just so happens to be fill a big need and is a nice fit for either a 3-4 or a 4-3. The Broncos are making a transition so he can shift between shcemes if they backtrack and switch back to the 34. Why Dareus over Bowers? Marcell has a higher floor and the Broncos have had success in the past finding pass rushers later in the draft like Elvis Dumervill. Then Broncos take the safe route and get a big man who is also a high character guy with a consistently high reving motor.

3. Buffalo – LB Von Miller

At the Senior Bowl Chan Gailey and the rest of the Bills staff coached the squad that Von Miller was on. They got to see him up-close every day where he got rave reviews. The Bills need help at many areas and I think if Newton fell to the third pick they would take him up but they will be happy to settle for a pass rushing force at OLB to help boost one of the weakest pass rushes in the league. They should be sold on him due to the Senior Bowl exposure.

4. Cincinnati – QB Blaine Gabbert

Carson Palmer listed his house at $2.1 million. He’s serious about moving on or retiring and the Bengals have said they are operating like he’s already gone. If the Bengals take a QB Palmer could even be traded for a first round pick this year or they may understandably want Palmer to start this year while they give a rookie time to learn the offense and develop his game. The Bengals used a first round pick on a top-flight TE last year and they still might keep Ocho Cinco and go with their young wideouts. I don't see them passing on a QB if they get a chane to draft one and I think they prefer Gabbert over Newton.

5. Arizona – CB Patrick Peterson

Probably not the way that the Cards want the draft board to go. They would prefer Gabbert but if he is gone they would look at the second round for a QB. If Blaine is gone then Miller would be their next choice but in this scenario he’s also gone so they decide to shift Rolle to safety and pair Peterson with Cromarte to form possibly the best secondary in the league. The added benefit is that Peterson can bolster their special teams. This pick could provide instant production which is essential in this draft especially with a top-ten pick. The fact the Cards would get a bonus of an exta top-flight special team player cement this pick if the draft plays out as I speculate.

6. Cleveland – DE Da‘Quan Bowers

A.J. Green and Nick Fairley are also in the mix but the Browns lack any viable starting 4-3 DEs to play outside of DT Ahtyba Rubin. The Browns cross their fingers and hope Bowers' knee checks out and that they can plug him to start at DE from day one becuase they are wafer thin at DE. Browns GM Tom Heckert was in Philadelphia when the Eagles were able to grab WR DeSean Jackson in the second round but at the same the three highest draft picks used while Heckert was there were, DT Corey Simon (6th pick), DE Jerome McDougle (15th), and DT Brodrick Bunkley (14th), all defensive linemen. The Browns biggest need meshes nicely with available talent before factoring in draft history of Heckert. Da’Quan Bowers looks like the best talent left on the board and he plays a position at the area of greatest need for the Browns.

7. San Francisco – CB Prince Amukamara

The Niners saw both QB go off the board and then had Pat Peterson get snatched. Many have them plugging in DT Nick Fairley but he is tailor made for being a penetrating 3 tech DT in a 4-3. Nick is undersized for a 0 tech 3-4 NT or a 5 tech 3-4 DE so I don’t see him going to San Fran. The Niners have Crabtree so I don’t see them paying another top-ten wideout like A.J. Green or Julio Jones and DE Robert Quinn hasn’t proven he can do drops to play effective coverage so he has to be considered a project to make the conversion to a full time starting 3-4 OLB. He has excellent edge pass rush ability but the Niners can’t take a gamble on a project or a situational pass rush specialist so even though Peterson is off the board they still address CB and take Prince.

8. Tennessee – DT Nick Fairley

The Titans envisage Fairley lining up next to last year’s first round draft pick Derek Morgan for a dream team on their D-Line. The upside of Fairley supercedes any downside by the time the 8th pick is on the clock so at this point in the draft Nick Fairley is a bargain, ching-ching!

9. Dallas – DE J.J. Watt

The Boys won’t go with another top-ten WR after drafting Dez Bryant and his saggy pants so cross off A.J. Green. I don’t feel that any O-lineman rate a top-ten selection even though many have and will argue O-line with this pick. No other CB is worth this pick either and I am still high on OLB Anthony Spencer playing opposite DeMarcus Ware so I go with the highest rated 5 tech 3-4 DE to bolster the front line. The Boys new DC Rob Ryan seeks to replace Igor Olshansky, the weakest link in the Dallas front seven. Watt comes in as an immediate starter and anchors the right side for years.

10. Washington – WR A.J. Green

Steal of the draft falls into Shanahan’s lap to offset any angst of missing out on a top QB. Green is a no-brain pick if he falls this far so the Skins bypass Robert Quinn and Aldon Smith and try the difficult transition of converting a down lineman to stand-up 3-4 OLB which typically takes a solid two years if it is successful. Washington has nothing at WR and Santana Moss looks like he’ll leave in free agency once things start up again. They can’t pass on Green is he’s there not even if they get offers to trade down for more draft picks.

 I could easily see it going exactly like that! Well done.

I love how you are updating this. Very nice idea.

I still just dont see Carolina going QB.

I also think Bowers is moving down due to some injury problems and could be out of the top 10 completely.

I like your overall thoughts though.

PS that would be a steal for Washington and then maybe my Rams could get Julio

I asked, Sig, Cecil, and Matt, to post their top-ten lists and so far Sig and Cecil have chimed in and both have Carolina taking a QB in their mocks so you may very well be correct but I am not sure how they can adequately address their QB position unless they take one with the first pick. The second issue you raise is valid, Bowers knee may indeed be a huge issue. Today is Da'Quan's pro day workout so we should find out more information after the workout but you are correct raising concerns about his knee since sources are whispering that his knee is a legitimate issue that can drop him down the board in the draft.

Bowers knee an issue ... concerns about the Clemson defensive end's right knee won't go away. An impressive pro day workout on Friday may help recoup Bowers some support. We hear, however, that some NFL teams won't take a chance on Bowers even if he works out well. Those teams feel the knee has more severe problems that will resurface in the future, irrespective of his torn meniscus surgery.

More concerns on Bowers knee ... Da'Quan Bowers has reportedly failed two physicals so far this spring and injury concerns are beginning to cause the former top 10 prospects' draft stock to fall considerably.

... According to Peter King of Sports Illustrated and Todd McShay of ESPN, Bowers is completely off of two different NFL teams' boards as he failed two physicals and failed to show adequate progress in the healing process.

Titans passing on A.J. Green for Nick Fairley would make me a sad panda.

Of all the guys in the top 10, other than Newton, there is no one I want less than Fairley.

I mentioned that Sig and Cecil posted their top-ten mocks in response to me asking and they both had a QB going to Carolina, this is what they posted. First my updated list and then Cecil's and then Bloom's top ten.

==============================================

NFL draft is coming up so, Sig, Cecil, Matt, give us your top-ten.

Here's my latest update March 31st1. Carolina – QB Cam Newton

2. Denver – DT Marcell Dareus

3. Buffalo – LB Von Miller

4. Cincinnati – QB Blaine Gabbert

5. Arizona – CB Patrick Peterson

6. Cleveland – DE Da‘Quan Bowers

7. San Francisco – CB Prince Amukamara

8. Tennessee – DT Nick Fairley

9. Dallas – DE J.J. Watt

Cecil's top-ten

Here's my top 10 from my first 'What if?' Mock Draft, set to release next week on the NYTimes 5th down blog...

1. Carolina – QB Blaine Gabbert

2. Denver – DE Da'Quan Bowers

3. Buffalo – QB Cam Newton

4. Cincinnati – WR A.J. Green

5. Arizona – LB Von Miller

6. Cleveland – DE Robert Quinn

7. San Francisco – CB Patrick Peterson

8. Tennessee – DT Marcell Dareus

9. Dallas – OT - Tyron Smith

10. Washington – QB Christian Ponder

my first 'What if?' deals with 3 QBs going in the top ten of the first-round....Locker doesn't go to Washington because Shanny already had an athletic QB with accuracy problems (McNabb) and told me at the Combine that Locker played more like Jake Plummer than Jay Cutler.

2. Denver – DT Marcell Dareus

3. Buffalo – QB Cam Newton

4. Cincinnati – WR A.J. Green

6. Cleveland – WR Julio Jones

7. San Francisco – CB Patrick Peterson

8. Tennessee – DT Nick Fairley

9. Dallas – OT Tyron Smith

10. Washington – QB Jake Locker

==============================================

I have Cam going to Lina based off of many points but the one that tipped the scales for me was video I saw of the Carolina coaching staff at Auburn's pro day. Watching them evaluate Cam I picked up that they were operating on a higher level of evaluation. If Cam isn't the pick I am convinced he is on a very short list but my gut tells me they have already made a decision.

Here's a story that came out yesterday evaluating the top QBs and it points out a negative on Gabbert that I hadn't heard before.

Top QB story

... Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn is lashing out at critics of Cam Newton, saying that the Heisman Trophy winner has what it takes to be a great NFL quarterback.

Responding in particular to draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki’s harsh assessment of Newton, Malzahn said this morning on ESPN Radio that Newton has a great work ethic and is a tremendous team leader.

“He was a joy to coach,” Malzahn said. “You know what he did on the field, but off the field he’s an even better person.”

Malzahn praised Newton’s leadership abilities as well.

“He’s a great leader,” Malzahn said. “He’s the best I’ve ever seen in the locker room.”

“I hear stuff about our offense being spread,” Malzahn said. “A lot of our concepts are the same concepts that he’s going to run at the next level. . . . He can make every throw, he’s a great decision maker, he sees the field very well.”

... … Blaine Gabbert? He could be good. He's bright. He understands the fundamentals of how to manipulate safeties. He's been coached in a very quarterback friendly system that made Chase Daniel, an ordinary QB talent, into a stud in college.

I am told Gabbert had very little success throwing downfield. Teams are looking at statistics about his completion percentage on passes of 5 yards or less compared to those of 5 yards or more. Obviously the shorter pass gave Gabbert a better percentage. It's that way for all QBs. But Gabbert's completion percentage on passes over 5 yards dropped so dramatically -- moreso than most other QBs -- that it is making scouts question his ability to succeed on intermediate throws.

Gabbert completed only 61 of his 301 completions for more than 15 yards. Compare that with say, Landry Jones of Oklahoma, who completed 101 of his 405 completions for more than 15 yards and you start to see Gabbert didn't stretch the field nearly often enough. Gabbert was eighth in yards per attempt in his conference.
So Sig and Cecil might be correct and Gabbert could be the top pick but my gut feeling is that they will take Newton and if that happens then I think my top-ten falls into place but Da'Quan's knee could shuffle things. Here is the top-ten by Cleveland Plain Dealer Browns wag Tony Grossi, his top-ten reflects his concern over Bowers' knee.

Grossi's top ten mockOur newest mock draft also reflects a fall from the top spot by Auburn quarterback Cam Newton and A.J. Green's return to the No. 6 spot for the Browns.

(Previous position in parentheses)

1. Carolina -- Marcell Dareus, defensive tackle, Alabama (2).

Comment: Can Rob Chudzinski make a player out of Jimmy Clausen?

2. Denver -- Patrick Peterson, cornerback, LSU (7).

Comment: John Fox always had solid CBs in Carolina.

3. Buffalo -- Blaine Gabbert, quarterback, Missouri (3).

Comment: This one will be much debated in Bills' draft room.

4. Cincinnati -- Cam Newton, quarterback, Auburn (1).

Comment: Strong personalities -- ahem -- don't faze them.

5. Arizona -- Von Miller, linebacker, Texas A&M (5).

Comment: Five out of six times, his name comes up here.

6. Browns -- A.J. Green, receiver, Georgia (4).

Comment: Mike Holmgren would be the one to tip the scales to offense.

7. San Francisco -- Prince Amukamara, cornerback, Nebraska (9).

Comment: Second-best DB still a big upgrade for them.

8. Tennessee -- Nick Fairley, defensive tackle, Auburn (8).

Comment: New DL coach Tracy Rocker, of Auburn, allays concerns.

9. Dallas -- Da'Quan Bowers, defensive end, Clemson (6).

Comment: Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan can be very persuasive.

10. Washington -- Julio Jones, receiver, Alabama (10).

Comment: Mike Shanahan may deal for a quarterback before round is up.

Carolina is not going to take Newton.

1. Too many character concerns for this franchise.

2. He's not NFL ready which means you're starting Clausen. If Clausen does well you've just wasted a pick. If Clausen fails badly, then you could be looking at 1.1 and Luck next year.

3. Clausen was rolling on a bad toe last year. He may still stink, but the toe made it a lock that he would stink last year.

4. Lock out in progress. Losing a significant portion of the off season could set Newton back an additional year.

5. No labor agreement. Newton will be a bear to sign given how much Auburn had to cough up to sign him.

Nope. Fickle transiant fanbase here. More important to put butts in $75+ seats buying $8 brews than chase one year of jersey sales. Charlotte doesn't have the history of Detriot or Chicago where the fans will give you the benefit of the doubt.

#5 is pretty lame since no team is going to sign anyone until the labor deal is done - and then it will be under the new rookie wage scale.

This is my only questions as I have been very anti drafting qb #1 overall for Carolina...

Who looked better in their last year of college (and by saying better I mean more pro ready) out of these three?

I would say Claussen in a landslide. Claussen junior year was much better than either of these guys this year so why are you drafting a guy = or less than the guy you already have?

Draft Fairley or Darius

Thats what you need

You have successfully copied Scott Wrights mock draft
I have heard Scotts name but I and had to Google his name to find his site to see what he had posted and when. Yes I'm familiar with Draft Countdown, good draft site and I have seen his site in the past but I hadn't seen his site in about a month and it appears he updated his mock less than two weeks ago so I never saw his updated mock.He has an entire two round mock that he updated on March 21st and he has the exact same names in his top-ten that I have. I re-did my list yesterday and although nearly identical we have two names shuffled as he has Gabbert and Newton swapping spots. I don't have Gabbert going first and only recently came around to having Cam going first. I also don't think the Bengals would take Cam if he fell down to their pick so I don't agree with Scott's mock. Scott's reasoning is coming from a totally different direction and he explains each pick thoroughly. His site doesn't allow cuutting and pasting or I would show a side-by-side comparison how I came to compile my mock to compare with what he says but so go to the link at the bottom of this post for his full two round mock draft because I'm not about to retype everything. To get the names on his top-ten just take the names on my top-ten and swap Gabbert and Newton.

Here is the link to his site but I hadn't checked his mock before compiling my list also his reasoning has no connection to what I used to make my top-ten. It might seem trivial but I don't agree with Gabbert going first or Cam Newton going to Nati and put in a link and posted the reason why a few posts up.

Here's Scott's mock at his site called Draft Countdown:

Scott Wright's entire mock

Check out his top-ten then take another look at my top-ten and check out the reasoning for each pick, we use totally different reasoning for each selection. Trust me I wouldn't go the trouble of posting just to cut and paste Scott Wright or anyone and I show my homework on how I compiled my list and so did Scott and our reasoning is unique but we came to a nearly identical top-ten. Also I show each iteration of my mocks in the first post, I'm not sure if Scott has his first renditions of his mocks posted somewhere to check how he has moved around players but you can track my mocks.

This is my only questions as I have been very anti drafting qb #1 overall for Carolina...Who looked better in their last year of college (and by saying better I mean more pro ready) out of these three?I would say Claussen in a landslide. Claussen junior year was much better than either of these guys this year so why are you drafting a guy = or less than the guy you already have?Draft Fairley or DariusThats what you need
I understand Carolina fans not wanting another rookie QB but I can't agree with your reasoning of using Causen's college production and comparing his college production to Cam Newton's rookie production sine Jimmy has played a year in the league so we have a year of watching him under center in the NFL. I liked Clausen's game coming out but I took note of Mike Holmgren's succint evaluation of Jimmy when he simply said, "I wish I liked him more." Holmgren saw something he didn't like and judging what Clausen did his rookie year and what Holmgren said and from the way the Panthers were scrutinizing Cam Newton I think they aren't sold on Clausen and know the first pick is the only way they can count on getting a viable option this year at QB since it seems they do not want to bank their jobs on Jimmy Cluasen.

Carolina is not going to take Newton.1. Too many character concerns for this franchise.2. He's not NFL ready which means you're starting Clausen. If Clausen does well you've just wasted a pick. If Clausen fails badly, then you could be looking at 1.1 and Luck next year.3. Clausen was rolling on a bad toe last year. He may still stink, but the toe made it a lock that he would stink last year.4. Lock out in progress. Losing a significant portion of the off season could set Newton back an additional year.5. No labor agreement. Newton will be a bear to sign given how much Auburn had to cough up to sign him.
#5 is pretty lame since no team is going to sign anyone until the labor deal is done - and then it will be under the new rookie wage scale.
That's exactly what I meant. No wage scale in place at this time. If the players win in court then it's free market value for the rookies and Carolina is stuck negotiating with an agent, Cam's dad, and a prospect that already went with the better offer in college.

First of all, read this http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/08/25/1641635/clausen-nursing-sore-toe-plans.html#I'm not saying that this is the reason for all of Clausen's woes, but there is a decent probability of it being the case.

Of course the Panther's are scrutinizing the top QB prospects. If they want someone else who will be availabale at 1.3 to 1.10, they want to give the impression they'll take a QB prospect in order to genarte some trade talk.

Botton line, Richardson isn't bringing Newton to Carolina.

For every Holmgren who said something negatively, there was another football expert saying something positive. I think it is completely insane for Carolina to take a QB at #1. First off, they have a highly touted QB who has 1 year of experience. Secondly, there is not top tier QB prospect this year. I am not a supporter of Clawson, but it seems worth it take the best player available and give Clausen another year.

I mentioned that Sig and Cecil posted their top-ten mocks in response to me asking and they both had a QB going to Carolina, this is what they posted. First my updated list and then Cecil's and then Bloom's top ten.So Sig and Cecil might be correct and Gabbert could be the top pick but my gut feeling is that they will take Newton and if that happens then I think my top-ten falls into place but Da'Quan's knee could shuffle things.
I'll point out that these guys have missed badly on Carolina picks in the past. They tend to ignore the franchise history and insert their personal opinions into their mocks. I recall 2-3 years ago when one of these guys thought Carolina was a lock to take a QB in the first and I pointed out several reasons why it wouldn't happen. Now that I've gone out on the limb I guess I better get ready to eat some crow.

At one point I would have been fine with Gabbert or Newton, but I really hope the Bills go defense. Their defense really needs some playmakers badly. Especially the front 7. I'm be thrilled if they take Von Miller. They could use his pass rush abilities, he his a high character guy (which they love) and he's a senior. Last year they drafted all seniors and both Nix and Gailey has made it clear that they value experience and guys that aren't one year wonders.
