US Men's National Team (9 Viewers)

This is one of the great age old debates in coaching for all sports.

Do you find players that fit a system, or do you find a system that fits the players?

Berhalter seems, at least so far, to believe in a system first and I bet he wants to mold his players into it.
Agreed, a system first approach is great when you have marginal MLS talent that truly requires that structure...it gets a bit more complicated when you add 4 or 5 world class players into the mix.

I’d argue the system was built for the A team and the B team is just trying to fit that system.  There’s a natural place at their natural positions for the top 6-7 guys.

This is an interesting point.  I had assumed the system was very similar to what he used in Columbus.

Your comment made me think of Twellman's insistence that the RB position seems tailored made for Adams.

so safe to say we won't have any complications this cycle....   lol

hey, if we can't laugh we have to cry :)
So true...that was more about me hoping/wishing than where we're currently at...definitely trending the right direction after several almost non-existent years at the Champions League level.

every one has their own definition of what a world class player is.   Mine is limited to considering players who are roughly in the top 5-10 in the world at their given position.

This actually goes against my point, but I’d highly doubt he plays RB in 2022 as I doubt a “weighted” 4-3-3 works against good teams (too predictable).  I do think we end up with a 4-3-3, just not one where the RB locks with the DM.

The ironic thing about this B team camp was that Berhalter had so much time to teach his philosophies and tactics to the team.  But with the A squad he won't have any where near as much time since the international window in March is very small.   I wonder if the team is going to look more confused than anything in the beginning?

Even with the extended time in January, Berhalter said the reason Lletget did not start either game is that he was struggling to fully understand many of the concepts during training.   Yedlin is the biggest concern since he is going to be asked to do things the most different with very little training time.
depending on personnel, he could also use the LB in that Lima role instead.

get it... I said "LB instead"

Here is a good question.  If Robinson is not healthy yet, who plays in that LB spot in the March friendlies?  I saw next to nothing from Lovitz that deserved another chance......
garza still injured?

eta: Bello! or Brek!

I guess I had my LB blinders on- I didn't mind Lovitz the all of you guys did. had some nice quick decisions on the ball... even though he was mostly not doing much that made me aware he was there- which I took away (rosy LB glasses) as a good thing.

I don't know.  He was sent home from camp a few weeks ago.  I have not been paying any attention to Cincy's preseason.

Do you think he would have started the January friendlies if healthy?
he was playing great for ATL through the playoffs... I don't see why not.

I added an edit to my previous post.

like everyone else, I am ignoring the Panama scrimmage due to the team Panama brought.

But the CR team was different.  It was built fairly the same as the US with a lot of established pro's who had not yet broken into the full national team.  And with CR being one of the top countries every cycle in the region, this was a fair and equitable match up.  As such, the tepid first half was kind of what I expected/feared out of the US for the whole game.

The second half was eye opening.  The US created two goals, two hit posts, one goal line clearance and one muffed sitter all in just 45 minutes.  And the best part of those 6 great chances is that they were all separate plays and build ups.

The bold was my biggest concern.  As CR tired in the second half, there was acres of space on the left side of the field.  From one of the sideline reporters we learned that Berhalter was begging Lovitz to get forward but he never got involved in the attack much at all over the two games.

During the after game press conference Berhalter was asked what tactical changes he made at half time that resulted in the 180 in the second half.

He surprisingly said he made none.  Paraphrasing, he said he believed in the game plan and just needed to convince the players to take more chances, specifically in how they played the ball in the back line (which is something I think @El Flopponoticed with some of the scary passes in the back).  Berhalter said he believed if the US moved the ball quicker every where, CR would tire and space would open up (which is what really did happen).

No.  Pulisic has been second choice behind Sancho since October.  The only reason he hasn't been getting much time is that Dortmund has only had one game a week since December started.  Starting tomorrow, the DFB Pokal and Champions League fixtures will start popping up midweek and they'll have to rotate more.  I would expect Pulisic to start either tomorrow or this weekend's game.  If he wants more playing time he'll need to start getting goals and assists and force it to happen.  Dortmund is in the middle of a possible multiple title season.  They're not gonna sit guys just because they don't figure into their long term plan.  They're trying to bring home hardware NOW.

Those scary passes are sort of a tenet of the 4-3-3 as the CBs go out wide, the outside backs push up, and at a minimum the 6 drops between the two CBs.  Good oppositions high press this and try to force you to play long out of the back.  It’s also one of the reasons Steffen is sort of critical to its success since he’s so calm with the ball at his feet (contrast him to Johnson the next time you see NYCFC play).

This is what I was worried about with Lewis...NYCFC is going after Carlos Lopez for a TAM contract (Legia forward whose nickname is Carlitos).  That would push Mitrita out wide and push Lewis down the pecking order.

A note about our northern neighbors.  Alphonso Davies was added to Bayern's Champions League roster.

With Thomas Muller suspended for BOTH legs against Liverpool, Davies may see some time as a sub.

USA planning to play 2 home friendlies before Gold Cup begins. Opponents tba, but Venezuela now seems like a possible foe.

This tweet is based on the announcement that Mexico will be playing Venezuela on June 5th in Atlanta.

Hope he can find a way to stay healthy

[Stejskal] Some details on Toronto signing Terrence Boyd: Told his base salary is around $200k. Deal is guaranteed for 2019 with multiple option years. Low-cost flyer for a solid talent.

Very promising development for Julian Araujo. The 17 year old defender was on the U.S. U-20 World Cup qualifying/CONCACAF-winning team back in November and is eligible for the 2021 U-20 team as well. He earns the start today with the Galaxy's first team

90 year old Pizzaro ties it up for Bremen.  Great game.
And then Dortmund scores and then Werder answers again.  This is nuts.  3-3, coming close to pk's now.

edit: Werder could have won it at the last kick!  pk's now.  4 Goals in extra time.

Werder Bremen advance on pk's.  Dortmund missed the first two kicks and only had 4 kickers.  Pulisic was not in the first 4.

I noticed that during the pk's, even though Sargent was not in the 18 it looked like he was wearing his normal soccer gear on the bench....
