US Men's National Team (13 Viewers)

Yeah, absolutely loved how they used Jedi last night.

Poch realized you can leave him in the middle of the field on offense as basically a post-turnover presser in waiting (putting weah out on his wing as the offensive attacker)...and he STILL has enough motor and pure speed to play that role and haul *** back to his LB spot once needed.

Does that work against better teams? I'm skeptical. But it was pretty awesome last night
It won’t work against the top sides but I am going to assume Poch knows that. I am hopeful that tactics would be different when playing an inferior team, vs playing a similar team, vs playing a significantly better team.

I was very impressed that he changed the look and feel after just playing Jamaica a couple of day’s prior. I am convinced part of the reason the US looked so good in the first half was that Jamaica had no clue what was going on.

One of our biggest GGG complaints was that scouting the US was so ******** easy because we never changed our style.

I mean, he did great... But Jedi's not the guy I want handling the ball in the middle of the field. Still too dodgy with his touch for that role- even thought it's improved a ton. Dest otoh...
I agree.

Poch may not yet know the cavernous gap in offensive talent between Scally and Dest but if Dest recovers to full strength, it should open up different tactics for Poch to try.

Musah out wide is so interesting for adding strength on both sides of the ball on that side. I'm imagining some fluidity with Dest, Musah, Jedi, Weah and CP... And then Swag, Johny/Adams/Tess anchoring it all with the forward dropping in and out as well. If they can keep the workrate even close to last night :superboner:

Even though we should never really consider him, I guess there is still a very remote chance Gio returns to top form before the WC, which would add another very skilled player to the mix.

Year and a half is a long time. I'm definitely considering him in the mix.

And Adams will have time to get injured and rehab 3 or 4 more times at least in that span.

And I'm trying to make sense of the coach trying different strategies. What's all that about? You're supposed to play the same way tactically against every team without ever changing.

I am not sure what you are asking. You may be just kidding around but in case you are not:

When you are on the top of the mountain, you can dictate any tactics you want, and the opponent must adjust.

When you are a team like the US, you will be able to dictate tactics to weaker teams, vary tactics based on similar teams, and adjust tactics heavily if facing a far superior team.

And another thing.. we had to play Jamaica, but Canada has to battle vs Suriname.

I assumed this was some GGG sarcasm

Leo Messi has just played his final game for club and country in 2024… as Argentina beat Perú 1-0. Messi’s assist means he becomes the player with most assists in international football history joint with Donovan (58).

This is interesting

Luca Koleosho ('04) not in the squad for Italy's U21s AGAIN today...

That's now four out of the last five games where he hasn't been in the squad despite being called up.
So what's his status? One-time switch to US and he's ours?
he is youth cap tied to Italy.

He is also eligible for US or Canada via one time switch.

Interestingly, he left the Italian U21 camp and returned to England before camp was completed. I do not know why.

Honduras needed to get to half time up 2. That late goal by Mexico hurt.

I did not realize if Mexico loses the quarterfinals, they have to go into a preliminary set of qualifying for next years Gold Cup. The US winning put them directly into the Gold Cup.

Sounds like Cowell was smart and put in a release clause for Europe to get around the ridiculous values Liga MX places on their players

@PSV are reportedly interested in signing #USMNT winger Cade Cowell. 10 Goals & 3 assists in 36 games for Cade since arriving in Liga MX

This would be a pretty weird place for him to end up. He'd basically be replacing Lozano (who hasn't been playing and I think leaves during the winter break) or Bakayoko (who I think has been rumored to transfer). I just can't see him getting playing time for PSV, even off the bench.

Tillman has spent time this season on that left flank Chucky plays. I'd hate to see a US player keep another US player off the field.

Playing in that system, I'm confident that Tillman is like 3 levels above Cowell. Tillman is dominant at times for PSV (and is probably even better when he plays centrally than on the left). I just don't see Cowell as a suitable replacement for anyone that currently gets playing time for them.

They're different players... Cowell is more of an out and out winger, like Chucky. Tillman does best more central even if he's quality out wide.

But fwiw, I was worried about Tillman keeping Cowell on the bench not the other way around. And for it being a "like for like" with them swapping one out for the other.

I haven't seen enough of Cowell lately to know his quality, but I'd love to get more guys playing club ball together for that linkup. Holland does seem like a good spot for him to ramp his game up a level though.

I have to assume he is going to get a call for Camp Cupcake

Diego Luna:
"As of right now, I’m continuing to work with RSL, getting this award, and continuing to play well. I’ve been called into the reserve roster for the U.S. a couple times, so I’m just continuing to work and waiting for my chance to get that call up. Like I’ve been saying, to prove myself in those opportunities I get cus that’s how it is. You get that opportunity, you gotta take it. I have not had any conversations or phone calls with the U.S. I haven’t heard from either the U.S. or Mexico.

Why is it called Camp Cupcake? And is that the January camp or something else?

Yeah, the Jan camp.

Generally referred to as Cupcake because its usually filled with mediocre MLS lifers (with the occasionally younger guy with promise) who only get to go because there's literally nobody else with a pulse available. (its not a FIFA sanctioned match date, so no European based players other than the occasional rando from one of the Scandinavian leagues that take a longer winter break) Its a couple of weeks of no-pressure practice followed by a friendly that's usually against a really poor opponent (often some country's B or even C team)

There's really no reason it HAS to be so bad. It would be great for Poch to use the opportunity to begin getting familiar with some of our prospects who are still in MLS. I'm pretty sure that we can come up with an exciting 'wish list' of a roster. Include the MLS guys who have made recent USMNT rosters (Ream, Miles, Schulte, Tolkin, etc.) and then load up on young guys who we can imagine developing to where they're useful for us in the next few years (Neal, McGlynn, Luna, Miller, etc.). Bonus points for any dual Nationals we can include.

It is what it is. It's not "great" because there is no even small core of players for the starting team here... So what are we really looking at? Yes... Prospects and fringe guys who have to play in off-season MLS or scandia leagues to be available... And that's never a terrible thing. But then they're playing against other similar teams of no-regulars, developing Pochs tactics and methods for...no probable future use.

I would guess those guys probably WILL be there. I believe Miles has been there the last few years and unless Ream (in his advanced age) just wants time to rest, he'll probably be there too.

I dont see Tolkin as piece for the future. Schulte certainly could be, as the GK position is completely up in the air at the moment.

Dont get me wrong...there's usually at least a handful of viable players there. But the back end of the roster usually ends up being a ROUGH group of guys that are basically getting a "thanks for being an Ok American MLS player" participation medal.

But yeah, in theory, you could put together a lineup of all guys who MIGHT have some sort of future with the program. But then they're still playing a lousy opponent.

And it's maybe a handful, and they're developing relationships with guys who are MLS or Scandi only... And none of the other overseas regular players.

The way I see it, it's really only about the coach getting a chance to kick the tires on a bunch of available players. See how they train, how they play, recover, etc. It does next to nothing for building any kind of team element.

Gio reportedly had good days of training this week. I do not know whether that means he will dress or not.

As Floppo mentioned for another team, it is unfortunate that there is the possibility that if Gio dresses that Campbell may not.

Campbell did appear in 4 games including a UCL game but only for 34 minutes. From what I have read he did not play poorly but it is really hard to impress in that few minutes per game but at a place like Dortmund where they seemingly breed young attacking players, I hope he did not miss a window here.

Best case is obviously both players dress but considering that Gio is not on the only one coming back from injury, I don't think it bodes well for Campbell.

Yes you can argue he is too high but I don’t really care. This is kind of breath taking to even be in the conversation

“Aidan Morris twisted his knee last week and he’s going to out for a number of weeks. He’s not back with us until Monday because he’s getting some extra treatment over there and it allows him to take a deep breath really."

Oh this is sneaky big news. The only reason to sign a player like this is if they knew Tolkin was moving to Europe this winter

RBNY in talks to sign Chile int'l LB Marcelo Morales, per sources

======

PSV coach Peter Bosz is not surprised by Ricardo Pepi's recent statements. The striker recently said he struggled to remain patient as a second striker.

“With all my players I have talks, also with Pepi, I don't need to sit down with him after the international matches,” Bosz responded to Pepi's statements. “What he said about the striker position at PSV is not new to me. Pepi is a top striker and he is right when he says he is ready to be first striker at PSV. However, I have two top strikers and right now Luuk de Jong is my No. 1.”

He continued. “Pepi has definitely already played more than last season, the same goes for other players. I also said before the season that I would rotate a bit more. Nothing has changed about him and his behavior. Pepi is still very young, it is up to us to develop him and he has definitely become a better player already. But there is still plenty to improve.”

Pepi will start PSV's next game against Groningen tomorrow

I really think they're grooming him to be their starter next season. In the meantime, he's gotten plenty of playing time this season. I hope he stays at PSV unless they sign another established striker.

I can’t get a good translation but it sounds like Pulisic is either sick or slightly injured as he has not trained much the last couple of days and may not start today against Juventus

Sounds like he was sick after the international return and didn’t get any practice in this week. He’s on the bench, so must be over/getting over whatever he had. Hope they don’t need him today honestly. He could use a rest.
