Anyone here been to Mauritius?
(Or even heard of it? Or can find it on a map?)

Fantastic beaches with calm, crystal clear water. Rich cultural experiences and a plethora of delicious cuisine. Abundant natural beauty, and some of the most inviting people I've ever met.

Am I the only weirdo that doesn't find sight seeing enjoyable?

I mean for me I'm kind of in the middle. I book my holidays round things to do (usually sporting events), not things to see, and my time outside of the primary goal is going to be somewhat used up by essentials like eating, drinking, and meeting the locals, but I will usually have some time (typically in the mornings) where I just have hours to kill, in which I'll do the things you're seemingly not overly interested in. It's like when I was in Philly, is running up the Rocky steps and seeing the Liberty Bell high on my agenda? Not really. Does it kill some time when I'd otherwise be doing nothing else? Sure, so what the hell. Looking at it the other way, I could probably find a whole week of things to do in London while doing nothing overtly touristy, but it's not as if walking around and saying you've seen Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament etc is really going to eat into your time

I like a good hike and I like learning things. So I guess it depends on the sight and how to get there and what's the payoff.

question for the team...

it has been a long time since we have visited Europe.
our SOP was to visit the town's info center. request a room and provide specs. choose room.

we would only pre-book rooms for the nights we arrived and departed.

Is this still common practice?

danke
Was this pre-online days? I’ve never done it that way, but I usually like to know in advance what the options are, and make sure have reservations at my preferred choice. And that way I can just spend time there doing stuff with everything planned out, instead of needing to waste time trying to find a hotel room.

late 90s- early 2000s

we enjoyed the freedom of roaming. it was only an issue once... trying to check in late around lake como on easter. no occupancy anywhere and we were starting to run out of gas. finally found a cute place owned/run by a father and son.

Never been one to do a lot of sight seeing. In my younger days we went to the beach to swim and body surf or to the mountains to ride single track trails. Planned a trip to Europe but was shut down because of COVID. Now we really have no desire to travel that much. We just want to go to an all inclusive resort and relax, eat great food, sip tequila, watch the shows and maybe dance a little. Walk on the beach, do yoga and enjoy our time together.

Looks really nice, but damn that's a long flight. I think I'll stick to Costa Rica. :)

We've been dying to go, but yeah... Muy far, muy ducats.

We booked a trip to Anguilla next month, where we used to go a lot before we had our kids (and got married there). Haven't been in probably 10 years.... can't wait.

It's definitely a lot of time to spend on a plane. Flying Emirates makes it a lot more tolerable - truly the best airline in the world IMO. About 12 hours from NY to Dubai, 5 hour layover, then 8 more hours to the island. And no, it isn't cheap either. We've done it three times now (wife is an expat) and airfare has ranged from $1700 to $2200 at different times of year.

We went to Dubai and Maldives for our honeymoon... Emirates was amazing.

I remember, you helped me with a trip to S. Maarten in 2007! Never made it to Anguilla. #beachgravity
