Value drafting (1 Viewer)

I am big on using VBD every year thanks to Joe's secret formula. Maybe i am not thinking this through hard enough but...

I am in a league that has a lot of crazy point categories. One is that QB's get more base points for a TD then a rb or wr and you get even more depending how long a TD is.

Now I understand QB's in itself changing in rankings because maybe Vick or McNabb will get more points for rushing and rushing TD's rather the just a pocket passer around the same rank.

What I dont understand is if the Overall Section slots the different positions based on value among all positionst... why would this change when i put my personal scoring into it? Brady is now the #2 overall pick where the generic has him later on. I understand QB's are more valuable but the value doesnt change amongst the Qb's compared to the other positions. There are still less Rb's in the world. etc... Just not sure why in an overall picture when you are drafting based on value compared to other positions it would change so much.

Thoughts?

Brady is more valuable compared to a QB lower in the ranking at that position (usually someone around last starter).

To put numbers to it, If Brady has 300 points in a regular scoring system and QBx (the baseline QB) has 150, Brady's value is 150. In your system he may have 450 points and QBx may have 200 giving him a value of 250. For the RB's, if the change in values over the baseline RB don't change as much, then Brady has become more valuable.

Becuase VBD is primarily based on scarcity given a baseline. Scoring system and starting postional requirements are integral to determining that scarcity. Take for example Wes Welker in a PPR league vs tradition TD only.... Obv 1k yds and 8tds are nothing special, but if you are getting a pt/112 catches, that vaults him up the list. (finished top 10 in PPR in my league, would presume somewhere in the late teens in traditional league)A 2QB starting league will create more scarcity for the position, which in turn makes it more valuable, and equatable to the RB position... Yes within the individual QB category Tom Brady will hold the same value over Peyton, but the overall positional scarcity is what defines VBD...Hope that helps....

Got it. thanks guys, makes sense now. None of the other knucleheads use this in my league so it's Brady #6! Thanks

Just be aware, VBD does a good job of illustrating the value BASED ON THE POOL OF PLAYERS. If you are doing an auction, that's mostly all you need.

In a draft, however, there is also value to be had in the way in which your league selects players. To give the simplest example, let's say that VBD says that Moss is the most valuable player available at pick 1.10. If you are pretty certain he will still be there at your 2.03 pick, he is obviously not the player that gives you the strongest team you can make with your picks, even though VBD may be correct in saying that he's the most valuable player available.

To really maximize your team, you need to not just know the VBD value of players, but you need to understand how your league drafts, and what the implications are on later rounds of the decisions you make now. Dodd's annual Perfect Draft article is an example of the kind of draft prep you want to do... where you figure out where the spots are that players can be had for more value than others picked in the same area, and how to combine those value players together into a complete starting lineup.

nice post... part art, part science... understanding draft texture is an artform. Its like determining an opponents poker hand, you put them on likely ranges and act accordingly.
