One time in the Bellagio I asked this Asian guy in cowboy boots to take our picture.  Busy casino lobby, family wanted a picture.  I was looking down at the camera, telling him he needs to push this button.  

He takes the picture, and I take the camera back.  Then I saw his face.  

"J-Johnny Chan?"

"Yup."

I fell silent.  And then he walked away.

Just be sure to get the fried chicken. My buddy went and ordered all this other stuff and no chicken. But he's not too bright.

I'm not a big dessert guy so I can't really help you there. They do have a lot of gelato at the Venetian.

ETA:  So freaking good.  Started with fried green tomato BLT and did chicken and waffles (with watermelon).  Honestly I'm not a huge fried chicken fan, but this was awesome.  Highly recommend.

Super gorgeous at Lake Las Vegas this weekend. I've been a few times and lived nearby when much of the construction was done in the early 00s. This was the first time it looked as good as the pictures. Shot 36 holes, ate at Marssa, relaxed by the pool, hit a $9500 progressive royal and never saw the strip, which having lived there is okay with me.

 
OK, wife and I are taking a long weekend here early June.  Flying in to arrive local time of about 8:30 on Friday night, leaving Tuesday night on the redeye home.  Right now we are booked at the Delano section of Mandalay Bay for a room that seemed to be a reasonable price (Scenic Suite for about $235/nt after taxes and fees).  I've been reading through the thread a bit but was looking for some specific things and hoping you all can help out.  

  1. How was the hotel choice?  Another FBGer stayed here recently and had good things to say about it.  Are there any places that would be as nice or nicer for less money?  Not really looking to spend any more unless it is a little more for a big jump in quality/amenities.
  2. Wife and I already looked at the Yardbird menu and will probably hit it up for brunch one day.  Place looks perfect for us.  May also do the BLT Steak Travelzoo deal for a nice dinner one night.  Any other "nicer" places that are must-considers that won't also kill me for $300?
  3. What are the best hidden gem/cheap eats places we should make sure to hit up?  
  4. For activities, I think she wants to see the Neon Boneyard.  We probably won't do Slotzilla as we are going to Zipline in Hawaii in August.  Was considering renting a car one day to drive out to Hoover Dam.  (Is that worth it?) Saw the big happy hour/ferris wheel thing at the Linq and that looked pretty cool as well.  What other things are we missing?
  5. If we just walk around looking at Casinos as sightseeing one day, which are the ones we really want to make sure we see?
  6. What's the whole deal with the Fremont area?  
  7. Definitely want to hit up at least one show, maybe 2.  If we narrow it down to a few we are interested in, is it best to hit up one of those "same day" ticket places?  Are there some that if we really want to see them we should just book in advance to assure we can go?  What are the best ones?  Not really into concert performers - more of the Cirque or Absinthe types.  Not sure how into racy/burlesque the wife would be. :sadbanana:

1. Everything I've heard about the Delano indicates it's lovely. It is on the southern end of the Strip, though, and at your price point, you can stay pretty much anywhere. The "standard" rooms at Venetian, for example, are 700 ft2,  located mid-Strip, and probably the same price or cheaper. You might be able to get a suite at Mirage for that price, for another example.

5. How's your heat tolerance? Early June is usually just this side of bearable. You could still get blasted with 100+ degree temps, though you might not at that time of the year. Having said that, Cosmo and Bellagio are next door to each other and should be on the your must-see list.

6, Fremont has smaller casinos, closer together, and mostly united by the canopy that has shows in the evening. Possibly Neon Boneyard in the afternoon, and Fremont Street at night.

1. I may look into the Venetian - though my wife liked the description of the Mandalay Pool and the fact that Delano has a carveout section.  

5. Heat tolerance - we are going here because she wanted to go somewhere hot (it was basically here or Cancun) so I better not hear any complaining from her.  Plus it will be the earlier part of the month.

Not sure if it's new or not, but there's a zip line inside the Fremont Street experience. It takes you end to end at 40MPH, 70 feet above the street. Should be cool if you're into that type of thing.

Hey, I took a shot.  Had a frat brother from your area that was nicked named the Polish Hammer.   Had quite a few "ski's" in our frat 20+ years ago.  We also called him Hands of Stone and he became a chiropractor.   Can't make this stuff up.

I saw that yesterday.  We're going to be ziplining in Kauai in August, so may skip it in Vegas.

You'll have to provide notes on Kauai.  Will be there in December.  Zip line is funny to watch.  Kept thinking folks would be raining change down on the Fremont gawkers.  East Fremont is cool too if you want a mix of different bars and good food.  I took Mrs. Osaurus on a Friday night for maximum impact.   :lol:

I love Mandalay Bay, and stayed at The Hotel(now Delano) a few times.  It's a great resort and I like being away from the gawkers.  Aureole was the best meal I've ever had in Vegas.  We got the tasting menu, 8 courses, and it was incredible.  We also really enjoyed RM(or RN) seafood.  Ri Ra in the Mandalay shoppes has awesome fish and chips.  I'm not going to mention how awesome Yardbird is, because I don't want to pile on.

 
Dragon Noodle Company is meh in Monte Carlo. Went there after the Death Valley day.  There's a ramen place there that I should have gone to instead.

I have a bunch of Kauai info from when I went 5 years ago but will update it before I send to you. Best piece of advice to start with is get the latest edition of Kauai Revealed from Amazon. 

 
Where's the best place to stay if your main focus is playing the WSOP tournaments? Does Rio jack up the rates? Going out there 6/3 thru 6/7 to play the colossus.

UPDATE - Looks like I can stay for damn cheap at : Harrahs, Flamingo, Ballys, PH, and Linq. Talking average per day of less than $20 (plus resort fees but that's about the same at all of these).

OF the casinos listed above, which would you recommend? I'm mostly focused on WSOP so I'm not too concerned with amenities, but are any of them far and away better than the others?

My only experience is with the "GO room" at Flamingo, which I liked.

What rate are they showing for the Rio?  I got $37 and $30 for May 30/31.

FUJB and I are playing in Colossus also.  PM if you want to drink with us.

Ive stayed at Planet Hollywood and it was fine.  Good center strip location and the Pleasure Pit Dealers are always nice to look at

I've heard the new Linq was pretty good too 

Im going late September and it looks like damn near everywhere is $250/night right now

I got those rates because I gamble somewhat big at Harras Cherokee and have a Total Rewards card. You can probably get better rates than that if you sign up for a card and use it.

Why can't you get rooms at the Rio?   And WTF, I am in Cherokee a few times a year.   Was just up for last WSOPC.   I got my Rio rooms free because of my rewards card,  diamond.

When it comes to shows, I am trying to figure out what to do.  Someone here mentioned La Reve and AbSINthe as a good 1-2 punch.  I saw Chris Rock will also be on tour at Monte Carlo while we are there.  Of the big name non-concerts (the Cirque/AbSINthe/etc types) are there some that tend to sell out more than others?  Or am I good buying same day tickets at Tix4Tonight for most things as long as I have some flexibility?  Would be for Saturday, Sunday, or Monday nights.

Tix4Tonight is a great deal but wont have tickets for the new or the hottest shows. Thats not to say the shows are bad, just not new. Great shows can be had for a decent discount there.

I think any Cirque show is a home run.   Wife and daughter seen a few a loved everyone.

What are the odds they'd have tickets for:  La Reve, AbSINthe, MJ ONE, LOVE, or Zumanity?

 
Also, are there any lesser-known shows in Vegas that are worth investing some time/$ into?  Or stick with the known entities?

Has anyone rented a car to drive to Hoover Dam?  Is it worth it?

I loved Gordy Brown, but he was recently shut down.  :kicksrock:

If you are looking for non-A list comedy, we had a good time at Brad Garrett's comedy club (MGM). He's there once a month and plays the emcee role. Pretty sure you could get Tix4Tonight for his club. 

 
I saw a David Spade + Ray Romano combo at the MGM comedy club and thought it was a great deal. Not sure if they're doing a residency or what, but it was really good.
