Mark Cannizzaro, of the New York Post, reports Maryland TE Vernon Davis thinks the New York Jets will select him in the first round of the NFL Draft. "I think I'm going to the Jets," Davis told The Post Wednesday, April 27. "If I'd say anything, I'd say the Jets will draft me. I'm pretty sure, if nothing crazy happens, it'll be the Jets." Asked if he believes he can come in and be an immediate impact player, Davis said, "Oh, I know I can, right away."

:o

If the Jets draft him, he will be marginal. That's what happens to the Jets when they draft TE's.

He'll be great player.

But, this means he'll likely be chosen over D'Brick, and that will once again set the Jets fans off.

That is my favorite part of the draft every year.

Did he tell them that last year?

Vernon Davis on Colin Cowherd's show today.

I don't think HE even believes the Jets will take him. Basically he said they spent a lot of time with him and the ways in which they would use him. Nothing about a guarantee of taking him or anything like that. Then Cowherd said "but ehh, I don't think they're going to go with a tight end" and Davis basically agreed. He said he would like to go to a big city if possible. He mentioned SF at least a couple times as offenses where he would fit.
Davis on the Tony Bruno show this morning on FSR, and they again asked Davis where he "wants" to go. He again said the Jets, but later admitted it was only because of where they were picking. Mark Willard I think is his name, asked him specifically if he would mind SF and he said he would love to play in SF and the only reason he would prefer NY over SF was the $$ involved in where he would be chosen.

He stated that either way he would be going to what he feels are up and coming teams, and being a part of rebuilding either of the 2 great franchises excites him. He did mention he would rather not end up in GB.

April 27, 2006 -- Vernon Davis has a gut feeling, and it's one that either will excite Jets fans or horrify them as Saturday's NFL Draft approaches."I think I'm going to the Jets," the Maryland tight end told The Post yesterday. "If I'd say anything, I'd say the Jets will draft me. I'm pretty sure, if nothing crazy happens, it'll be the Jets."Davis is a 6-31/4, 254-pound physical freak of nature who runs faster than 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash and can leap over the Empire State Building without a running start. He's thought of as a can't-miss prospect, a dynamic player who can change the game for any offense.Think the moribund, pop-gun Jets' offense, devoid of a single explosive player, can use someone like Davis?Davis does."If [the Jets] know what's right for them, they'll take me, a guy that can make plays," he said at a lunchtime interview in Manhattan set up by representatives from EAS, the supplement drink he'll endorse as a pro. "I don't look at myself as a tight end; I look at myself more as a playmaker."I feel I can come in and be one of the best tight ends in the league. It seems like every goal I set for myself I tend to reach it. My philosophy is, somebody might beat me, but they're going to have to bleed to do it."Asked if he believes he can come in and be an immediate impact player, Davis said, "Oh, I know I can, right away."Told of the black hole the tight end position has been over the years for the Jets, who since 1992 have used seven draft picks on tight ends, three of them in the first round (Johnny Mitchell, Kyle Brady and Anthony Becht, where have you gone?), Davis was undaunted.Told that sports-radio callers already are ranting against the Jets taking another tight end in the first round, Davis said, "My answer to that is - and I'm not trying to knock anyone - but who do they have now?"The answer would be Chris Baker (eight starts in 52 games, 52 career catches) and journeyman Doug Jolley (118 catches in four seasons and a non-factor as a blocker).Davis was asked if he would embrace some New York competition with Giants brash TE Jeremy Shockey. Davis' eyes lit up."Oh, yeah, he'll definitely have some competition here," he said. "Oh, yeah."Davis said he's well aware of Shockey's game and those of the other top tight ends in the NFL."I can make people miss and run them over, too," Davis said. "I'm explosive. With that, you've got a Jeremy Shockey and Antonio Gates mixed in one."Davis said he visited the Jets at Weeb Ewbank Hall three weeks ago, spending time with owner Woody Johnson and head coach Eric Mangini.Davis, asked what his lasting impression was, said, "I could tell by the way they were talking, the way we bonded, that they liked me. It just seemed like it was good."Davis said he'll wait for his name to be announced in the green room at Radio City on Saturday. Told by The Post that we'd be at the Jets' complex for the draft on Saturday, Davis smiled and said, "Well, I'll see you at the complex on Saturday then."

Wow I can't remember ever hearing a prospect say he would rather go at the 6th overall pick (SF), over the 5th pick (GB)...especially after evidently saying in the same breath he wanted to go to NY due to where they were picking (4th).
How many guys want to go to GB over SF? You've got to be a little nuts to WANT to play in GB during the winter.

Where do you start with this?

Did Davis' representation prep him and lead him to say these things?

Did Davis just give an all too honest answer that currently has his management scrambling and a few teams either turned on or off?

Very odd back and forth this close to signing day.

Yeah, the VD drama is almost as big a story as VY and where he goes.

Anyone else get the impression that VD is a primadona? Seems like he's getting an awfully big head considering he hasn't been drafted yet. I heard he was talking about being better than Antonio Gates.

Seriously. I REALLY hope that the Bills take a long look at this. Marv Levy has talked about character non-stop since taking over as GM. I can't imagine them signing a guy that seems to be making it clear that he's all about big money and fame. I've been one Bills fan that never has been too excited about the prospect of taking Davis, now I'm even less thrilled. If they take Vernon Davis I'll be downright upset at this point. If he's there at #8, I hope that they pass.

He might be one of the top TEs to come out in years... but 1.04 is way too early IMO. I think he's trying to lobby for a higher pick is all...

It makes sense considering how much he's been getting his a@# kissed since the combine. Ever since then his stock went through the roof, and every analyst has been talking how great he is. Haven't heard about him saying he's better than Gates. Sounds like something one of the draft "experts" may have said.

I am under the impression that Green Bay covets Davis...wondering now if this would include some type of trade with the Jets that involves one of the Packers unhappy WRs (Walker-Driver)?
Davis in GB would be fantastic for him and the team. He's in the Sterling Sharp mold of athletic, powerful playmakers (or Shannon Sharp since he's a TE). A rookie season under Favre would do wonders for him, and for Aaron Rodgers in learning how to use a stellar TE. Davis in GB would be probably the 3rd or 4th rookie drafted in my league.

Why would you hope they pass on Davis and pin their future hopes on the oft' injured Kevin Everett?I for one love his confidence, though it wont make him any friends if he doesn't ease up on his self-aggrandizing rhetoric. As long as he is committed, doesn't get stupid penalties, doesn't make himself a TO-like media circus, and produces like a beast... he can talk all he wants. If he doesn't produce, he will of course make himself look stupid.

I'll try and find a link, but it has been reported that VD said that he is one of the best TEs right now before ever playing a down in the NFL and will be better then Antonio Gates.I want my team's players to be confident, but this is a bit much. And to add that the only reason he would play somewhere else is because of the $$$.

Think it, don't say it.

Was listening to Steven A. Smith interview Davis on 1050 ESPN radio yesterday.

He compared himself to Antonio Gates often. He later said he is a combination of Antonio gates and Tony Gonzalez where he can make guys miss and has the power to run over guys.

He even mentioned that he could see the Titans taking him at #3.

One thing is for cetain after listening to him, he isn't very articulate.

He can go to the Jets as long as its with the 29th overall pick.

Leinart, Mario or D'Brick for the Jets at #4.

He only said that he was more athletic than Gates, not a better overall player.

Why would they be pinning their hopes on Everett? From what I understand, Royal is the starter right now with Euhus the #2. They're hoping that Everett develops into the #1 eventually, but they don't need him to right now.I also just don't see the TE position as being that important in the overall scheme of things. I'd much rather have an impact OT, DT, S or LB than a TE that already seems to be about the money before even stepping on the field in the NFL.

Actually on the best damn sport show yesterday Sally asked him if he was better than Gates and he said yes. So it was sort of a loaded question. Then Sally said something sarcastic like "Is there a TE that can run a 4.38 40?" and VD said "I can!". So he's not the most humble guy, but being cocky is usually good if you can back it up.

All it takes is a Polamalu, Harrison or Lynch head shot to cure the cockiness. Or he could end up like Winslow.Proceed with caution, M Davis.

I thought arrogant brash rookie Shockey was far better than the humbled(well a little bit) guy we see now.

I want my guys who play along the line to be a little nuts...maybe even a lotta nuts ;)
If you like nutty guys who like nuts then SF is the place to play.

Wow! And I thought the 'experts' were judgemental. The kid is young and arrogant. Not as bad as some, and how many of you were not more Superman at his age than you are now. Even the outspoken 'next T.O.' Shockey has calmed down a bit over the last couple years. Give this guy a year or two to mature, and a year or two to experience a 45 catch season or an injury and he'll quiet down. I didn't find him nearly as offensive as many other vets in the league "Joe Horn can't cover Joe Horn."

You mean his coach could put him in on a meaningless onside kick and end his rookie season before it starts??

Maybe they are afraid he will ignore his contract/common sense and try to do an Evil Kenevil impression.

I just loved watching that put your shoulder down and truly take on a LBer move Shockey did over and over. Aside from me, it seemed to fire up the team. An exciting somewhat ordinary play. So, if Davis has some attitude (I don't follow college ball) I'd probably like to see it on the field.
