Sources: Owens placed in 'reasonable cause' testing program

Last Tuesday, on the same day the Dallas Cowboys announced that wide receiver Terrell Owens had agreed to a contract extension with $13 million in guaranteed money, Owens earlier was in New York meeting with NFL officials after being placed in the league's "reasonable cause" testing program for performance-enhancing drugs, league, team and player sources told ESPN.

Owens was placed in the program because he missed day-of telephone calls to set up random tests, the sources said. A player that misses a test can be subject to disciplinary action, but because Owens had a "plausible" explanation, league administrators decided he would not be suspended or fined. Instead, Owens now is subject to random testing for performance enhancers up to a maximum of 24 annual screenings, and these additional screenings can be required, if the NFL chooses to do so, for the remainder of his NFL career.

An NFL spokesman said the league would have no comment because of the confidentiality restrictions of the program. Cowboys officials had no immediate comment. Owens' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, was unavailable for comment, but his partner and brother, Jason Rosenhaus, said, "We're not allowed to comment on anything pertaining to that topic."

After receiving a letter from the NFL informing him of the action, Owens met with NFL officials last Tuesday morning because he was in the New York area. Owens has since passed a test for performance enhancers, the sources said, adding that he has never had a positive test for any illegal substance.

Owens was warned that he risks a suspension if administrators experience a similar road block as when they attempted to reach him two weeks ago. On one occasion, the primary phone number Owens provided was that of Drew Rosenhaus. Subsequently, the sources said, the alternate phone number Owens provided went unanswered, except for an automated message that communicated, "The voice mailbox for this user is full." Owens told the league that his phone had not shown any record of its missed calls.

The testing program requires players to make themselves accessible and communicate their specific location when they are contacted for a test.

It was late last Tuesday afternoon when Owens and the Cowboys held a news conference at the Cowboys' headquarters at Valley Ranch to announce the receiver's new three-year, $27 million contract extension with $13 million of new guaranteed money.

He has since PASSED that test. The only thing he is guilty of is not answering his phone. Typical ESPN Hyperbole.....move on.

Let's just emphasize the most important part of the article here.

So TO has never tested positive. And he subsequently passed a test.

Maybe its me, but it seems that if this were almost any other player in the NFL, this would not be new worthy. So the guy's cell phone voice mail is full. So is my wife's. This really seems like the media is trying to make something out of probably nothing.

This shouldn't be a shocker to anyone...his body doesn't pass the "eye" test...

...and come on now...these tests are not hard to pass if you know the right people

Lets just kick this issue back under the rug where it belongs...

Wow, the NFL should hire you, save themselves alot of money on urine and blood testing. Its is certainly possible to be in the shape TO is in without steroids.

Sometimes I wonder how people graduated from elementary school. Did you actually read the article and comprehend what it actually said? The fact that this is the #1 news link on ESPN's news area on the front page, makes you realize there is nothing going on in the sports world right now.

This seems like a moral victory for TO. Guy misses a phone call, has a plausible explanation that is accepted by the league. He's tested and passess, as he has every other time in his NFL career. I don't see anything remotely troubling from this story.

:bag:
Since you have expert steroid sensing eyes, perhaps we can wager (Like the PacMan bet) about this one too Chachi?EDIT: Oh whoops...you backed out of the Pacman bet. :)
You're alright in my book Bankerguy. I backed out of the Pacman bet because Ministry of Pain is a jerk whom I don't want to associate with in any way, shape or form. I'm not sure what we could bet on the TO story, like everyone seems to say there are drugs to mask the tests.

I'm not railing on you either. I do think you are an alias, but that's not important. I just find the anti Cowboy and anti Owens sentiment funny/annoying sometimes. Clearly it's a slow news day. The media talks about something that will likely generate some attention and we leemings debate the issue. Mission accomplished ESPN. I can't wait to hear Skip Bayliss on this.We Cowboy fans are still waiting for TO to tear apart our locker room. Also, why is it that McNabb has been so quiet the past few seasons. Weird.

Besides Strahan retiring it's the top story on the front page of ESPN (Including Celtics/Lakers, Triple Crown, Baseball in general) and it's also got top billing under Strahan on the NFL page. Maybe ESPN has gotten so Enquirer-esque that their top stories are non-stories.
what is the story? that he didn't answer his phone and per NFL rules if you don't respond your subject to more tests, he explained the situation to the NFL, they were happy, he was tested and passed. If his name surfaced in relation to the steroid dealer that may be an issue but this is nothing. I know people love to hate TO but this is silly.

if he misses the next phone call (which now he'll be getting lots of them it sounds like) it won't be a non-story, what exactly is espn supposed to do here?

nothing. I'm sure this happens all the time, it just happens that TO was involved so they need to report it....

pretty sure any big name player gets placed into a different drug testing program for the rest of his career they would report it.

it's totally up to the league. They can test him up to 24 times but they may not test him one additional time, he may be subject the rest of his career or they could drop him at any time, it's up to the league. Given his explanation and their response, no fine/suspension it appears they believe him.

Hey, Chach, can we get the "Juicy" removed from the thread title. It would seem the only Juice that TO is on is Orange juice...

I read the article, I was just trying to figure out why espn is getting blasted for reporting it....he went from getting tested once an offseason to possibly every other week

shocker: a player from South Ameica's team on drugs...

oh, anyone who saw him crying like a little girl had to suspect there were other factors in play here. I'd call it reverse 'roid rage - like with a feminine twist.

never a dull moment with TO!

The only thing newsworthy is this:

Owens' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, was unavailable for comment

First time ever

He has his big contract, shouldn't be long now.
As opposed to the "little contract" at 10 mil/year he just finished up.Uh...huh.Good grief
Thanks for the input.

Yep. Perfect example of a non-story.Nothing to discuss here.Whether it be the media or the fans, everybody is just too eager and desperate for a T.O. story of bad ilk. It's a shame, and it's ridiculous.

It's only a big deal if he misses another call.

Owens was warned that he risks a suspension if administrators experience a similar roadblock as they did when they attempted to reach him two weeks ago. On one occasion, the primary phone number Owens provided was that of Drew Rosenhaus. Subsequently, the sources said, the alternate phone number Owens provided went unanswered, except for an automated message that said: "The voice mailbox for this user is full."

Is it true that if he simply misses another call he will/can be suspended for a season?

Partially correct. Yes he faces disipline for another missed call. It would NOT be the entire season to my knowledge.
