Today marks the day that WW1 ended so 11/11 is about giving thanks to those that served.

Memorial Day is for remembering those that died, more specifically killed in the line of duty.

i am not a vet never served frankly realized early that i just did not have what it takes sort of hard to admit to myself but it is what it is and you gotta dance with the girl that brung you but anyhow i have friends that did serve in vietnam and it is funny to me that they will just not talk to me about what they saw over there but if two vietnam vets get together they will talk to one another and you can tell that it hits them pretty deep i guess this is one of those things in life where all i can do is admit that i do not have the stones to get in on on that conversation and i am aok with that they earned that right and i am damn thankful they did

About 30 years ago while temporarily detached from my command I visited a VA long term care facility in Hampton, VA. It was Memorial Day weekend, and they had a cookout. Wheeled out a bunch of WWII vets, several others who were able to with some assistance, lots of men with empty sleeves or no legs. A few weeks before I went on emergency to attend a family funeral, and I was stuck in Norfolk waiting for my ship to come off independent Ops. There was about 20-30 other people in a similar situation so we had to report each day. They asked for volunteers, comped us a day if we went. In my 22 year old mind it was a sucker play but with no car & pitiful nightlife I figured why not.

I ended up spending the whole day talking to a couple of army vets. Suffice to say it was very humbling. It was a privilege to just sit there & listen - joy just the war or the awful stuff, but what they did after the war, their families, baseball, whatever.

That was one of the best days of my life.

I'm a OEF/OIF combat vet and every time I speak with Vietnam Vets I'm taken aback at the real mark their service left on them. Worst conflict sans WWI, mostly because we were there for little reason, and the American public treated them like crap.

My Grandpa was a WWII vet and I went to the DAV and Legion with him as a kid, I remember a lot of the stories. Those guys did it because they had to but they had no idea what they actually accomplished until many years later. They just went back to their old civilian jobs and put the war behind them, because they were amazing people.

It's all baked into the cake. You get a salary and X amount of days off for summer, that's how it works. Who gives a ####? This is thread isn't about teachers anyway.

I've never been one to get into those anti-teachers conversations, but I think I'll lend my well-known aggressive posting style to the next one.

Honestly I could never work for the VA, I think it would slowly kill me. And I'm known as an insensitive #####! I have a soft spot for animals and veterans though, imagine what happens when a military working dog dies. I'm a mess.

I appreciate that but I'm too much of a boat rocker. Military or Law Enforcement work is all I can do, I need some structure and built-in righteousness.
