The ###-for-tat between the New York Jets and New England Patriots continued on Monday, with the Pats signing one of the Jets’ free agents.

Specifically, the Pats have agreed to terms with linebacker Victor Hobson on a one-year deal, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

Hobson, a second-round pick in 2003, has spent all five of his NFL seasons with the Jets. He started 14 games in 2007, 16 games in 2006, and 16 games in 2005.
Impacts?Possible starter?

Will he play ILB or OLB?

Likely depth and insurance in case Seau doesn't return this year.

You cannot replace Roosevelt Colvin with Victor Hobson

Prolly outside for now, need see what they do in the draft. Colvin was released back in February, did they bring him back?

They are saying ILB in this article, which makes sense.

The Patriots decided they couldn't wait until the NFL draft later this month to upgrade at inside linebacker, so they waded into the free agent pool and plucked out former Jet Victor Hobson, signing him to a one-year deal.

The acquisition of the 28-year-old Hobson, who spent the first five seasons of his career with New York, is less about the latest broadside in the Border War with the Jets and their coach, Eric Mangini, and more about the Patriots bolstering their linebacking corps.

The 6-foot, 252-pound Hobson was used as a strong-side outside linebacker in the Jets' 3-4 defense the last two seasons, but was really not suited for the position. He is stout against the run and has a body type more suited to 3-4 inside linebacker, which is where the Patriots plan to use him.

Last season, Hobson played in all 16 games, starting 14, and finished with 62 tackles and two sacks. His best season came in 2006, when he had 100 tackles, six sacks, and an interception.

"Victor is a good young player with considerable playing experience," said Patriots coach Bill Belichick. "We are excited about his addition to our linebacker unit."

A teammate of Tom Brady's at the University of Michigan, Hobson was taken by the Jets in the second round of the 2003 draft. For his career, Hobson has played in 76 out of a possible 80 games, making 58 starts. He has 343 tackles, 11 sacks, 3 interceptions, 3 fumble recoveries, and 2 forced fumbles.

With Junior Seau still deciding between riding the waves and riding running backs to the ground after surgery for a torn rotator cuff, Hobson's addition, along with the return of Tedy Bruschi, gives the Patriots some security at inside linebacker.

The team also has Eric Alexander, T.J. Slaughter, and Larry Izzo as backups inside, and outside linebackers Mike Vrabel and Adalius Thomas, who spent most of his first season with the Patriots playing inside, both have experience playing inside.

The Patriots also have Pierre Woods as a reserve at outside linebacker and are expected to pick up another outside linebacker later in this month's draft.

University of Arizona cornerback Antoine Cason was in town for a predraft visit yesterday, sitting down with Belichick, among others. Also visiting was Georgia Tech defensive end/linebacker Darrell Robertson.

Troy University's Leodis McKelvin, a strong candidate to be the first cornerback taken in the draft and a possible top-10 selection, is slated to visit next week.

In addition to being a top-notch cover corner, McKelvin is a dangerous kickoff and punt returner. He had eight career return touchdowns (seven punts, one kickoff).

The Patriots will also host Auburn defensive end/linebacker Quentin Groves next week.

NFL teams are allowed up to 30 in-house visits with prospects before the draft. A visit is essentially a final interview and medical check.

Good news for Hobson owners. He may get some nickel snaps.

Draft snip from SI.com regarding Hobson. Ironically, the description would lend the reader to believe Hobson would be an ill fit as an SOLB in the Jets D, but a great fit as an ILB in the Pats 3-4.

BIO: Four-year starter awarded All-Conference honors the past three years. Led the team in tackles as a senior with 99, also accumulating 15 tackles for loss, 5 1/2 sacks, intercepting two passes and breaking up another pair. Junior totals were 80-13-5 after 58-12-3 the prior year.

POSITIVES: Compactly built outside linebacker with poor size-speed numbers. Quick thinker who immediately reads or anticipates the action, scrapes well laterally and redirects to the action. Breaks down well playing with leverage, effectively uses his hands to stay off blocks and goes sideline to sideline working to make a play. Disciplined, reads the QB and gets depth on his pass drops. Stays on his feet and finds his way through the traffic to the ball carrier.

NEGATIVES: Not overly explosive, nifty and lacks a burst of speed. Slow getting off blocks once engaged at the point and best in the box defending the run.

ANALYSIS: Has the head for his position but deficient physical skills l. Built for the weak side but best playing over tight end in college, which he won't be able to do in the NFL. Either a two deep linebacker in a four-three system, or possibly an inside linebacker in a three-four.

The Jets never used Hobson at ILB in the 3-4, and that is where I always thought he was best suited. BB is about to school Mangini again.

I had read the SI link WD posted, and ignored the ILB/3-4 part, figured if ILB was a good fit, Mangini would have played him there. I'm not much up on the Jets, Hobson and Mangini, went back and looked and, for the most part, he was projected as an ILB coming out of Michigan. Rovers, most likely, has this pegged. ;)

Just want to add that Dom Capers is now on the Pats payroll.... he of the 3-4 pressure defense. This was one of the unheralded moves of their offseason so far. Hobson can hang back while Thomas and Vrabel put the heat on.

Hobson as a potential 3-down LB?!?! This would be huge for Hobson's value, especially considering opposing teams are usually "throw-happy" in the 2nd-half of most games.

Victor Hobson, who recently signed a one-year contract with the Patriots, has spent his career playing on the outside but will likely shift inside in New England. A thickly muscled 252 pounds, Hobson should be able to withstand the every-down grind of playing in the middle, thereby allowing the Patriots to keep Adalius Thomas on the outside. Thomas started out 2007 inside but was more effective after shifting outside around midseason.

From Jene's post regarding Mayo...

5) Victor Hobson leads the huddle. In making the switch from outside linebacker in the Jets' 3-4 alignment to inside linebacker in the Patriots' 3-4 alignment, sixth-year veteran Victor Hobson will be a player to watch in the ensuing months. If he can pull off the switch, and give the Patriots some quality play at a spot that has traditionally been difficult to fill, he could be one of the NFL's best under-the-radar signings. Hobson was leading the defensive huddle throughout the practice, and there was nothing that stood out physically (e.g. footwork) that would make one think Hobson can't make the move.

Still hasn't breached the top 75 in Dynasty Linebacker rankings.
I agree he must be there. While this year's impact depends on Junior Seau (who John Clayton interestingly postulated will return b/c the 2013 HOF class is already set), Hobson is young enough that his dynasty value jumped with the move to the Pats interior. Seau will definitely be done in another year and Brushci could be too. I have a feeling Hobson will already make an impact, if not outright start, this year and be a huge sleeper.
