Victory Points vs Head to Head (1 Viewer)

So I am commish of 3 leagues and I am looking at requests to change rules now that the season is over.

All three leagues are 12 team leauges and we either have 3 or 4 divisions. A couple of the leagues, the divisions are set and dont change so that we have some rivalries that have been around for 5+ years.

The idea of victory points is interesting:

Each week you play head-to-head like normal leagues. A win awards your team with 2 League Points, A Tie 1 point, and a loss no points. Very similar to how Hockey does it's season standing.

High Score - 2 League Points

2nd - 2 League Points

3rd - 2 League Points

4th - 2 League Points

5th - 1 League Point

6th - 1 League Point

7th - 1 League Point

8th - 1 League Point

9th - 0 League Points

10th - 0 League Points

11th - 0 League Points

12th - 0 League Points

But by using victory points instead of overall record / divisional record to determine standings kind of takes away from the concept of somewhat matching NFL standings.

I do like how it rewards teams that score high one week but lose their head to head game.

What do other people do in their leagues? Do a lot of you use Victory points? or strictly head to head?

I do like that scoring method. I have only seen it used on the Antsports site. I have never been in a league on other sites that have used that scoring method.

Basically if you have a really good week you would end up with 4 victory points for that week. 2 for the win and 2 for having a top 4 score for the week. If you have the 2nd highest score of the week but lose to the top scorer at least you end up with 2 victory points for one of the top 4 scores. I think it help to get the top 6 teams into the playoffs and the matchups are better than if a team or 2 sneaks in because they have been really lucky and piled up wins over really bad or unlucky teams.

This method eliminates the need to give the top points team that didn't make the playoffs a wildcard spot like some leagues do.

I am not sure of any other sites that even offer this as an option (I really have no idea and have not checked).

Seems like it would be a really good tie breaker but not sure I would want to use it instead of H2H

I used to play in a league that awarded your entry fee back to you if you were the highest point total, but you played double headers every week with the standing being head to head with total points as the tie breaker. I liked this best of all. I am currently playing in a league with a BCS ranking system with the team with the best head to head record getting its entry fee back. thats pretty cool so far.

I have one league that uses them, used to be more. Really, at the end of the year its rare that that it matters for who makes the playoffs* instead of just using H2H record. Mostly it just re-seeds one or two teams.

*based on 12 teams with 6 making the playoffs. Maybe once every three or four years the sixth team is different.

I love using the Victory Points. I play in one league that plays 2 games each week & also uses Victory Points. Total of 6 possible points each week. It is by far the fairest system I play in.

As a comparison, one league I am in I have by far the most points in the league but am sitting at 3-3 & currently out of the playoffs. Using the above system would offset the weeks where you are the #2 scoring team & lose to the top scoring team. It's happened twice so far to me & it's pissin me off.

I play in one dynasty that uses them. It is only in the 2nd year so I can't say for sure the effects of it but I don't mind it.

Also play in another dynasty that plays doubleheaders each week. Seems to take a bit more of the the luck factor out as well.

My league does both 3 divisions, 4 teams. You play H2H each week plus you do VP each week from 0-11, 1 VP per team you outscore.

At season's end the 3 division winners based on H2H record get a playoff berth.

The 3 wild card spots go to the 3 remaining teams with the highest VP.

All teams are seeded based on VP 1-6 so you could be unlucky with H2H schedule and go 6-7 but still be the #1 or #2 seed and get a bye.

Best of both worlds you have your fun of H2H but the real strength of teams are shown off using VP

My team is 2-4 but I have 44 VP (out of a possible 66). Lost 1 week 203.65 to 203.25 but got 10 VP out of possible 11.

One league I am in gives 20 points for the Win, 10 points for beating the weekly average and 2 points for every team in your division that you beat in total points scored, thus giving you a max score of 40 in any given week. ( 2, 6 team divisions) First year with this system. It is nice when you lose to still get points if you had a decent week. The upshot is that the league is quickly becoming the haves v. the havenots and the havenots are already looking like they have little hope of making a playoff run

Victory Points is far better than Head to Head. It gets tiring having a very good week only to lose to the high points scorer. It still awards points for the head to head win though, which appeases most of the people that somehow feel your team shouldn't be rewarded for doing well.

I'd like to see my league add a simple Victory Points system...one point for a win and one point for being in the top half of scoring that week.

It rewards the teams who have a high score but get unlucky and face the top scoring team that week and, better yet, it punishes the teams who put up a lousy score but still get a lucky win because they faced an even worse team that week.

I play in a league that uses VPs exactly as mentioned by OP. It's sort of a way to even the vagaries of scheduling. We've had two instance where a team with a better H2H record was beat to the playoffs by the team with more VP. But the team with VP had clearly better teams with tons more total points. The other teams really were beneficiaries of match-ups rather than having a better team. Plus, it gives you one more thing to root for during the games. This last Monday, I had a victory well in hand, but needed 15 points to get the extra VP which made it that much more interesting.

I've always enjoyed it to negate some of the schedule imbalances. (Division member getting to feast on 2 fellow division members that completely stink twice/year all the while I don't get to play them a single time. VP negates that advantage somewhat)

I try and only play in Victory Point leagues. Takes more of the luck out of it and awards the highest scoring teams.

How in the heck (and why) did a 4 and half year old post get bumped?
I searched "Victory Points" and this was the first thread that popped up. I guess that shows how popular it is, eh?Also, I figured the OP could explain it better than I could, so why waste my time regurgitating on my own?Well, I just wasted time explaining why I bumped a 4.5 year old post, so I guess it doesn't matter.
