Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (5 Viewers)

My biggest problem with sports games today is that everything is balanced for online play. As someone who hates playing sports games against other people (mostly because I think that the person who is willing to play the cheapest generally wins) I this really irritates me. I think it's a combination of wanting to appeal to the casual fan and the fact that the 13 year olds that love playing cheese online and calling their opponents gay are their largest and easiest audience to please. This happens in other genres as well (sawed off shotgun in gears of war 3 absolutely ruined that game for me) but sports games are the worst

Anyone playing The Walking Dead? Tapped into my buddy's PS+ account to get the first couple of episodes free (hopefully you guys know how to share downloads between your buddies on the PS3 network?). Just finished the first episode. This usually is not my type of game, but I am enjoying it quite a bit.

It's really good. No replay value, obviously, so it's best to think of each episode as the equivalent of a movie rental. Definitely worth it for $5 an episode.

Waiting to buy it during the Steam Holiday Sale at the end of the year. I could've gotten it for around $14 during the Summer Sale, but I thought it would be best to wait and buy it when all 5 episodes are available, so I can play them straight through. Maybe the sale will be better then too, but we'll see.

Dear god, they have ruined Madden. I mean holy cow. The game isn't bad, it's actually quote good so far but they have removed the entire franchise from the game.

You are essentially stuck in the Superstar mode or Ultimate team. There is no more setting up an online franchise for you and your buddies to play. Drafting a team from scratch and going at it. None of that exits anymore.

For now, they do allow you to play your friends online head to head, but there is no more season of playing as anybody on the team. As a guy who has played 20+ online franchise seasons with 4 RL friends over the past three Maddens - it's a little deflating.

In Madden 13, a coach career is the new Franchise mode.“The primary motivation [when we were designing Connected Careers] was to create a new, innovative career mode that allowed you to play as any coach or player in the same universe,” Madden NFL 13 senior producer Josh Looman told GamesBeat in an e-mail interview. “We couldn’t do that with the old features, so we built a brand new engine and plan to keep Connected Careers as our career mode foundation for a long time to come.”

Here’s what is and isn’t included in Madden NFL 13′s Connected Careers:

[*]Connected Careers puts players in control of any real NFL player or coach.

[*]Users can create their own player or coach.

[*]Players can create a league with up to 32 members.

[*]In each league, the game imposes a limit of one team per gamertag.

[*]It features salary caps and real contracts.

[*]It simulates the full off-season, the draft, and free agency.

[*]The fantasy draft (which is a fan-favorite mode from previous games) is not a part of Connected Careers.

[*]This mode will allow fans to control their team or player for up to 30 years.

[*]Players are not editable in Connected Careers.

[*]Madden 13 no longer allows NCAA players to import their draft classes from that game.
Both dealbreakers. Madden 12 was unplayable.

It looks like Madden 13 is playable, but axed the best part of the larger game.

The Shark Move here is to go to your local Gamestop and pick up a used copy of Madden 11 or 10 before everyone else gets wise to the total ruination of the franchise.
I did this today. Walked into my local Gamestop, traded in Madden 12 for a used copy of Madden 11. The guys looked at me like I was nuts. :lmao: "Madden 12 was awful. Madden 13 sucks too. This is the last year the game was any good."

I don't have a Steam account. Can someone tell me what the original Mass Effect sells for? I'm thinking of buying it if it's cheap enough and playing it on my laptop. I could sign up for Steam if it is worth it.

The original is $19.99 on Steam.

Also, for those of us waiting for Torchlight 2 to launch, Torchlight II launches on September 20th.

Was Madden 11 even that good? I used to be a total Madden fanboy and even played in some local tournaments back in the early 00s, but I haven't bought a game since Madden 08. Every year, I ask for opinions on whether the game is markedly better, and it always seems that the opinions are mixed. I can't imagine how awful Madden 12 must be.

That's what it is at Gamestop too. Seems like I could find it a lot cheaper in a bargin bin somewhere.
you can get it off ebay cheaper it looks like. Much cheaper if you are ok getting a used copy but even the new ones look to be around $13 (free shipping)http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mass-Effect-PC-DVD-Game-Brand-New-Factory-Sealed-Free-US-First-Class-Ship-/221117782615?pt=Video_Games_Games&hash=item337ba59a57

The actual game play footage the end is insane. Probably the best graphics I've ever seen in a game. This game has so much potential. Could be the best of the franchise (which is obviously saying a lot)
Saw this last night. The gameplay footage was literally unbelievable, in the sense that I have a hard time believing that they'll really get that kind of performance on consoles. But if they do, wow. That makes Killzone look like Pitfall.

the metal gear team has always pushed the envelope from a graphics perspective. Snake Eater on the PS2 made pretty much ever other game of that generation look like pac man in comparison.

I love the gameplay in all of these games. Unfortunately 90% of the game is cut scenes, not unlike that trailer.

If they just did 10-12 missions of just strictly gameplay they would be unbelievable.

Agree, as cool as Metal Gear is, i hate watching all those long cut scenes. I want to play a game, not a Game/Movie. When Metal Gear Solid first came out, the Cut Scenes were so cool since no other game really had done it before, but now that all games do it, i just want to play and stop watching cinematic scenes

Be honest with me here: does anyone really understand WTF is going on with the overall MGS plot as a whole? I completely stopped trying to follow along at one point in MGS4. Great games, of course, but the plot just seems like the most complicated thing ever to me.

Not a damn clue. And I'm an avid MG fan. It contradicts itself a lot. MGS2 was really bad for plot. At MGS3 being a prequel had a pretty established plot from their own backstory in the first metal gears and then MGS. So it was better. MGS4 had #### all going on as far as I could tell. So know, I have no clue WTF is going on in Metal Gear to this point based on the story.

Impossible to follow. There are little bits and pieces that I "get" but I get confused quite a bit.

I've beaten MGS 4 at least 10 times, and I even watched all the cutscenes recently on one of my playthroughs after the trophy patch, and I still have only a foggy notion of what this franchise is about. It's an over-written mess. Good thing the gameplay is awesome, because you're sure as hell not playing it for the story and the self-indulgent cutscenes.

The first Metal Gear Solid probably makes the most sense storywise and that's not saying a lot. Wonderful action games but Kojima seems to write himself in loops when it comes to his conspiracies.

After further review....

Madden has a few hiccups but so far it's PHENOMENAL!!!!!

After finely finding the franchise that they hid so well they even added a small pop/patch forcing a screen that tells you how to find it, I couldn't be happier.

No more super LB's. The touch passing is ridiculously good/precise. The new physics engine is both great and unintentionally hilarious at times. The stats are now saved from year to year in the online franchises which was one of my friends and mine's major complaints.

I haven't played it enough to notice the inevitable miss/glitch but so far I am really, really impressed.

FTR - I hated Madden for years and years. I thought Madden10 was the best in more then a decade. I thought both 11 & 12 were major steps back.

Thanks for the post, SM. I remember our league from All Pro Football, so I respect your judgment in football games. (FTR, I also though Madden '10 was pretty good and the 'll and '12 versions sucked.)I might dust off the 360 and give the '13 edition a try.

I am a pretty tough critic of games, especially Madden but I'm impressed. They certainly didn't just push out another roster update.

But how the #### do they manage to screw up the menu system every year? It's the least complicated aspect to programming the game! A franchise option that's hidden? :lmao:

Been playing MLB The Show 12 over the weekend. Hadn't played since 07. Solid as always. I don't get into the nuance of managing a franchise in baseball games (unlike Madden) but I really enjoy the RTTS/career mode. Have a young lefty throwing fireballs who just got finished serving time as a middle reliever and is about to get his first Major League start. The only issue with this game (as always) is that baseball is such a grind. I don't want to sim games but playing every appearance can get old - especially with the slow load times.

I played an entire season of a fantasy drafted team. It was a grind but fun. Now in the second year and I chose one up-and-coming #5 starter and only play his games. It's still a lot of fun.

For the show guys, how deep do the minors go? Single A or double AA?

I'm enjoying it also. Haven't played in 3 or 4 years. Still confused with a lot of the CCM crap. Not sure what skill level or the best quarter length is etc :bag:And HOW DO YOU TURN THE KINECT OFFFFF in CCM. I can't find the ####### option. I have it off for play now...

lol It's crazy. They new physics engine while a welcome edition, it isn't exactly fined tuned. You'll often see guys tripping, falling, and bouncing all over the place with near rag doll physics. It's such a glaring "we didn't have time to perfect it before the deadline" but it's forgiven only because it's sometimes hilarious and imo, will be missed in next years (non-beta) game. As far as how this stuff happens, I think it's because EA is #### to work for. I think they are just a revolving door for cheap labor looking for experience. Add on that Madden is just shipped ready or not by a deadline and you get what you get. The "best" game they can manage within a 1 year time frame. (If only they had guys working on versions a few years ahead of time and stagger them- you can only imagine what could be done.)

 No, you literally have absolutely none of the things I mentioned. Madden 11 & 12 feature the worst game physics and ball flight ever put into a game since 10 yard fight. Go get Madden 10 for even less. 10 was by far the best game from a gameplay standpoint in a decade.

I had 12, and agree with you 100% there. The physics and gameplay (and just about everything else) was awful. But Madden 11 has been great so far. I really like it.

I had an RB "fall on the pile" just laying there, with guys flopping all around but since his nothing hit the ground he stands up as 20 guys are rag dolling on the pile and he runs for another 30 yards

Oh yea. You can get sandwiched, but land on top of a player, get back up and throw the ball. On one hand it can be viewed as being ridiculous, but it's just the physics working, just not showing an accurate frame of animation. I like it.

I concede Madden 11 is better then 12. 10 just had the most balance and such a lower percentage of cheap/cpu cheating.ON on a side note about 13 - The cpu QBs actually read the field and consistently throw to open receivers.

Just wrapped up AC Brotherhood. Normally I don't go back to back with my AC games but the ending has me hooked. I may go right into Revelations or go into ME3. Not sure yet. Figure I can't go wrong either way.

On a tangent, has anyone played Risen?

I've been interested but from what I gather Risen is a train wreck and Risen 2 is only slightly better.

I didn't like Risen all that much, but Risen 2 is a lot of fun. However, there's a caveat here - if you don't truly appreciate RPG's, or if you need a game to have a lot of polish and really smooth combat, Risen 2 will disappoint. It's a little "rough", combat starts off bad, it's limiting in that you can't build a super-character, and it doesn't "radar" you to quest destinations (like Skyrim does, etc). Sometimes, you just have to figure it out for yourself (for example, you need to actually find/buy a map for each location before you can see a birdseye view of anything). Combat *does* get better, but it's no Dark Souls (or even Dragon Age). Shooting guns is fun, though. Loot is well done, character builds / skills are interesting, etc.I would say if you enjoyed PnP role playing, you'll like this game. Personally, I had a blast with it.

booted up the Planetside 2 beta for about 20 minutes. Spawned at some base in the middle of nowhere and drove around aimlessly in a tank until i got bored and figured out how to spawn directly into combat. Ended up in some super confusing base with 100 of my teammates shooting at guys behind a forcefield (we couldn't hit them but they could shoot us)

Then I gave up. This game is absurdly complicated and it really seems like they bit off more than they can chew. Combine that with the mediocre graphics and animations (not surprising considering its F2P) and the probability that you'll eventually have to spend real money to keep up with people and be competitive, and I'm pretty sure I won't be playing this.
