Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (12 Viewers)

I might have to check out Dead Space 1 now. I've never been into horror/action games, but playing The Last of Us with the lights off at night was an incredible experience. It may have converted me. Hell, I'm even thinking of that Denver high might be in order, and I haven't touched that stuff in a long, long time.

Dead Space 1 was great, Dead Space 2 was amazing, Dead Space 3 was good but a completely different game. Id recommend playing all 3.

System Shock 2 was pretty creepy. Add to that ammo wasn't plentiful, and your gun kept breaking...

Plus, SHODAN
Hells yea. Seeing Shodan reveal herself for the first time back before Bioshock. Back before all the modern game twists of today just freaked me the #### out. The game starts glitching and the music chills your spine until she reveals herself in the creepiest manner possible.

I keep waiting for an E3 where someone is introducing a game and then the lights begin to dim and the walls starting peeling away. A screeching metallic voice breaks through and then it speaks. "I am SHODAN." The screen fades up to a modern version of a fully talking SHODAN. System Shock 3 then fades in. People then proceed to lose their ####.
I would love to see a System Shock remake. I tried to play the original on an emulator a couple years ago and didn't get very far.

Yeah, see I have no desire at all to play a video game that is that stressful. I'm not going to lie, if I play FO3 in the dark I jump on occaison when something comes out of nowhere. I don't enjoy that. I play video games to turn my brain off and just relax. IT was mostly sports and GTA but this thread has made me branch out to Red Dead Redemption which was awesome and is due for a replay (but FO3 is just too much fun right now) and Arkham City which was fun but I lost interest at the Mr. Freeze part of the quest and haven't gone back into it yet - I don't think Batman games are my thing. Great game and I can see the love but just not me. And then FO3 thanks to NC's updates. And I've been hooked on this game almost from the start.

They're a little bit different - have you ever seen the movie event horizon? If so, dead space is that in interactive form.

That's a pretty fair comparison of course you have to add mutants to the mix.

My eyes have gotten worse, and my TV isn't the greatest, so this happens to me a bit while playing games. Especially at night in FO3, or when I am running around in the sewers. Last night I did the Those! mission, and I jumped at least once when an ant shot fire at me. Hell, even the molerats have jumped at me and given me a start. It is once in awhile for the Fallout games, but Silent Hill and Dead Space felt like constant dread to me. Loved them being a horror movie fan, but they still effected me a bit.

I want to cry every time redhead with no eyeballs shows up.

I tried playing Batman and Dead Space a couple times. I think what tripped me up was the controls. I have gotten too used to FO/Bioshock first person controls, that I am not really good when I have to try 3rd person. Really liked the games and how they looked, but couldn't get very far.

You will love Dead Space IMO. Then you will want to play 2 and 3. A great series, great story, awesome lead antagonist (Issac) as well.

Another great part of Dead Space is the weapon options, Stasis ability and the ability to use parts of the necromorphs to throw at other necro's and impale them. The enemy variety is very cool, graphics and sound are top notch. Just a really top notch Sci-Fi survival/action/horror series.

I have been playing through DS1 (on hard) and am going to replay DS2 (on hard) as well. I got the itch as I recently finished DS3 (after getting side tracked with other games for what seemed a long time). Cool thing is you can replay a new game plus with your current arsenal or just start fresh (which is what I did to try out different weapon combo's).

Another thing is the weapon customization/controls got better with each subsequent release.

I also truly hope a Dead Space 4 is in the works....maybe a back story on how it all began etc.

Anything new he should look at? He loves Minecraft, Zelda, Mario type games. Maybe the new Mario Cart?

So funny. I cant play Skyrim in first person, only 3rd cuz of the controls.

How about the Fear series? Anything there?

Also The Evil Within is coming out in October from our good friends at Bethesda studios. That looks like it has all kinds of great potential at being a true survival horror classic in the making.

I mentioned FEAR earlier. I have only played the first one though.

If you get Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U, there's a free download code where you can snag one of these games:

New Super Mario Bros. U

Pikmin 3
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
Wii Party U

UC2 was one of my favorite games last gen, but UC3 just bored me to tears for some reason. I guess it was just too much of the same. I agree that the games would've benefited from fewer grind it out gun-fights and just gotten on with the story instead of trying to pander to the reviewers who could then say it was a 12 hour game.
I agree with this completely. The last Tomb Raider also falls into the UC3 category for me as well.

Picked up an XBox One. I'm debating between Watch Dogs or Titanfall, mostly an online gamer considering I play Call of Duty and Halo.

The stealthy play of WD intrigues me quite a bit whereas the gimmicky play of TF turns me off, but since I play COD so much maybe TF would be a good option.

Opinions?
Like the others mentioned, after playing Titanfall there's no way I can ever play Call of Duty again.
RDizzle, titanfall is your choice. It ##### slaps COD and there game is very fluid and non gimicky once you play a bit.
Played TF last night, I must say...I didn't enjoy it. It seems like a well polished game but I feel like I'm playing transformers and not to mention the aiming is very loose, which is fine. I'm just not accustomed to it.

I probably haven't played enough for a solid opinion but it doesn't seem as competitive as I would like, as in skill matching, strategy and every win matters. Although COD is similar to this, I guess I was expecting something else. I usually only enjoy COD so much because I have many friends to play with, otherwise I wouldn't play that either.

I do agree it's probably better than COD, which isn't saying much. I think I'd rather play Watch Dogs.
The FPS genre has gotten a bit stale to me. When COD4 came out, I thoroughly enjoyed the single-player campaign and I subsequently logged 10+ hours a week online for months after. TF has been the most innovative game since then, but not enough to really lure me back in on even a semi-regular basis.

I'm assuming you have a Wii or Wii U but if you have a 360 then the Fable series is pretty good.

Destiny, IMO, is going to start the next branch off. More coop/MMO aspects. I think that the FPS genre got stale me because it was the same thing over and over with no sense of accomplishment. I don't think Destiny will be the end point but it think it will be the bud of a new branch. I think Dust514 tried to make the battles meaningful but missed the mark. Going forward I think there will be some type of global map that different factions will fight for and every game/match will influence it.

System Shock 2 was pretty creepy. Add to that ammo wasn't plentiful, and your gun kept breaking...

Plus,

The original definitely takes a hardcore ability. I played SS2 first and when I tried the original years later it was rough. Its one of thos games where the graphics and controls were not advanced enough for the concept at the time.

I tried playing Batman and Dead Space a couple times. I think what tripped me up was the controls. I have gotten too used to FO/Bioshock first person controls, that I am not really good when I have to try 3rd person. Really liked the games and how they looked, but couldn't get very far.

Batman isn't bad, but Dead Space seems like a console port when playing on PC. All of the controls felt weird, to the point I gave up really quickly. It just wasn't fun. Just fine with Bioshock, and like I said, even Batman the controls were fine, so it isn't just the 3rd person view.

Dead Space PC is broken. You cant play it with a kb/m and enjoy it.

I've tried playing Dead Space three times now and I can't get into it because of the clunky controls. I'll force myself someday when I catch up on my backlog. Or at least thats what I tell myself.

You can't? It's a simple W, S, A, D movement E interact, right mouse aim, left mouse shoot interface. The problem comes in certain tight environments when the camera sometimes struggles to give a good perspective. But the actual controls are no different than any other FPS or 3rd person RPG. One of the things I needed to adjust to was not having traditional HUD, the health meter is in the characters back and there is no minimap, although I like the unique method of tracking waypoints they use instead.

There are small adjustments but I don't get the whole "I couldn't adjust to it" thing. It's not that different.

I think what he meant was the problem with the game unless you turn Vsync off. I did that and it ran much better, but I felt it was still clunky. I've tried the Xbox 360 version and it felt the same there comparing controller to controller. Metro 2033 feels similar. It's just not fluid enough and that turned me off of that game too. (Yet another I hope to play through, since I also bought Metro Last Light to play after it - from the same bundle)

Ive played both versions. Ive never experienced a game so completely different on PC than on console. Ive played on hard on the 360 and had an enjoyable experience. I cant even play on easy on the PC. The controls do not respond the same.

Capitol building. Killed everything and more to go. Walking around the mall is awesome. Mutants everywhere and a ton of good scavenging

Loved Dead Space 1 and 2. One of the first series I played when I got my PS3. I let the reviews influence me and turn me off to DS3 though. Sounds like maybe that was a mistake. Can probably be had dirt cheap now, so perhaps I'll give it a shot. Need to finish up Demon's Souls though first. Already have Metro LL and Diablo III waiting on the shelf, along with Bioshock Infinite, which I just can't seem to get motivated to start. But what's another case on the shelf? Won't hurt anything right? They don't spoil....

Add me to the list of people who couldn't get into the Batman games.

I love Batman. Love the Nolan movies. Dig the character.

But the games just seemed too much like pointless button mashing of underpowered thugs until you reach a ridiculously powerful boss. So unimaginative.

I tried both Asylum and Arkham City and couldn't play neither 10% into the game.

Do you regularly game on a PC? I can see that it isn't as fluid as some other games but the notion that it is entirely unplayable because the controls don't respond the same is mind boggling to me.

Definitely can be button mashy. You really need to make quite a bit of effort to time your attacks to make it more elegant, but since you can get by with button mashing there is really no incentive to do so. But I didn't find the bosses to be overpowered.

Come on man. I've been playing PC FPS and TPS well before console. OF course I do. I'm telling you I've never had a game be so completely dysfunctional compared to it's console counterpart. You can't turn properly with the mouse despite numerous adjustments to sensitivity. You can't aim properly. I get taken down on easy by the simplest of enemies because I can't turn fast enough to see where they are coming from. I've never had that happen before.

Just came to post something similar, only I don't agree that it's a button masher at all.

You time your attacks. I'm a REALLY picky gamer these days and Batman AA is a REALLY good game. I think you should give it another go and try timing your attacks rather then smash the buttons.

Batman Arkham games use the old-school boss fight techniques that have been used since the NES days. They may seem overpowered, but there's a pattern that you exploit and once you find it, you can defeat them flawlessly. I like to compare the Arkham games to Metroid with some beat 'em up sauce topped on. The two hardest bosses in the series are Fries and Deathstroke - at least in my opinion. (Note: Freeze isn't really hard, but he makes you think out your attacks and you have to use stealth. It took a few tries to find his weaknesses, as he will adjust to your previous attacks.)

You can't turn properly with the mouse despite numerous adjustments to sensitivity. You can't aim properly. I get taken down on easy by the simplest of enemies because I can't turn fast enough to see where they are coming from. I've never had that happen before.
I find that interesting because I didn't have those problems. I presume you turned the v-sync off? Mind you I agree that it was far from perfect and DS2 & 3 improved vastly on the controls I just didn't think DS1 was completely unplayable. If IIRC I did have to increase the mouse sensitivity to near max during the asteroid shooting sequence to get the gun did not respond fast enough but I didn't have that problem controlling Clarke.

Definitely can be button mashy. You really need to make quite a bit of effort to time your attacks to make it more elegant, but since you can get by with button mashing there is really no incentive to do so. But I didn't find the bosses to be overpowered.
Just came to post something similar, only I don't agree that it's a button masher at all.

You time your attacks. I'm a REALLY picky gamer these days and Batman AA is a REALLY good game. I think you should give it another go and try timing your attacks rather then smash the buttons.
Timing your attacks precisely does work great if you put the patience into getting it down, along with all the combo options, however the problem lies in the fact that you don't have to do that to defeat hordes of enemies. Button mashing will get you through that just fine.

Yeah I pretty much agree with that but I still found many of those fights to be unique and challenging.

Definitely agree. I wasn't saying that it was a rinse and repeat type of game. Each boss is unique and does take some time to know exactly how to attack effectively. I also forgot to mention that I love the stealth elements in the game as well. I almost never feel like I have to take on a big group of thugs in a button masher. And it's suicide to try once they start arming themselves. Batman's armor isn't tremendously overpowered and you have to approach those fights carefully sometimes.

I really enjoyed Arkham Asylum. Arkham City was fine, but I was pretty tired of the gameplay by the time I finished it. I just thought Asylum was cooler with the scarecrow sequences and it was still new.

I've got an unopened copy of Arkham Origins since it came with my ps3 bundle, but I doubt I get to it anytime soon.

I understand this. I got Origins free with my video card and began to play it. I still haven't finished but 20% of it because I played through the first two games twice each and was burned out. I plan on going back to it after I finish the game I'm working on now. I'll undoubtedly wait out the next Arkham game too.

If you like Megaman, or Castlevania I highly recommend you pick up Shovel Knight, released on the 26th.

Game is virtually Megaman x Castlevania and is beautiful. Plays like Megaman, but instead of gaining powers for defeating bosses you obtain sub-weapons like in Castlevania.

Deathstroke is kicking my freaking ### at Peguins hideout right now. I am playing on Normal and every time I get him down to a quarter health..I am getting made.

ARRRR!!!! Gotta beat him tonight. I am only 7% into the game for crying out loud!!
