Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (11 Viewers)

Does Mass Effect get that much better? I've stopped and started it 3x - get to the hearing/trial early in the game, get bored, turn it off.

Do I need to make attempt #4?
No. Again, just Youtube the Vigil conversation on Ilos and move on to ME2.

Playing through Knights of the Old Republic for the first time. No, really. I am. Anyway, I just finally saved Bastila and am trying to get off the first planet that we're on due to the quarantine.

Well, I sort of lied earlier. I rented the game when it first came out and I think I played through it for a couple of hours and gave up because I couldn't get into it. Now that I'm more into this sort of RPG, I decided to give it a shot, but I'm still having a hard time getting into it. Even as far as I am, I feel like I'm just hanging in for it to get better.

I was the same way with Mass Effect and Fallout 3. With Mass Effect, I feel the game drags so much until the half-way mark of the first Citadel visit (or after the Citadel and you're on your first real mission). I almost put down Mass Effect and gave up on it the same way I did with KOTOR the first time. I really don't want to make that mistake again.

Anyway, I know we have a lot of fans of the game here. How long should I expect until the game starts hitting on all cylinders?
I would be interested in hearing about this too. KOTOR is a very highly rated game but I didn't get more than a few hours into it before I moved onto something else. I would also compare it to the original ME because I almost lost interest in that too (I'm so glad I didn't because it may be my favorite series of games ever). Will KOTOR end up being that good?
Well I'm biased as I love KOTOR and was into it from the beginning. With that said it has to be looked at now for what it is. An older game with what today are just OK graphics. Still it has a pretty good story and lots to do even though you are kind of on a rail. And the Force stuff is fun although to me this one is a bit more about using the light sabers than the force. Also when it came out the interactions determining how characters react to you was pretty new as well and still gets interesting further in as decisions pile up.
:goodposting: At this point, KOTOR should be played for the story. If you've played a significant number of modern games then the gameplay in KOTOR isn't going to do it for you.

But the story....Ohh the story.
I agree. I have played it so many times I have most of it memorized but I still enjoy running through it.
Has anyone taken a look at the ipad version of KOTOR? Supposedly the port worked out pretty well. If it had an ipad i think i'd have to buy this, it would be great to just have it around all the time. Last i checked i can't get my pc to run it anymore. F'n video drivers...

Borderlands 2 for $10 or Far Cry 3 for $20?

Never played BL1
BL2 gets a lot of love here. I wouldn't mind trying it out for 10.00, where is the sale?
Xbox live - today only I think.
I think it's an all week sale.
I played it for an hour last night - I don't find it very fun so far.
Played which?

I finished Far Cry 3 and found it one of the best games I'd played in years.

Ahhh, haven't played either Borderlands, but will probably pick it up for $10.

You should get Far Cry 3. I'd easily pay $40 for it, so $20 is a steal.

Still waiting for them to drop FIFA 13.

I have it. I never played the original since I wasn't into RPGs back then, but I'm really enjoying it. The movement can be slightly problematic on the touch screen, but nothing distracting.

I can't wait for GTAV, and they're not planning on a next gen version so I don't have to worry about a better version later.

If they're not making a next-gen version, I'll probably just skip this installment. I'm starting to think that I've already purchased my last current-gen game.

(Basically I'm still playing The Last of Us. Thanks to PS+, I've got Deus Ex, Saints Row 3, and Battlefield 3 sitting on my HD untouched. That should be plenty to hold me over until November.

Missed out on Deus Ex. I have it on PC but I feel like I would have played it more on PS3. Oh well.

For fans of TellTale's The Walking Dead, the new DLC chapter, "400 Days", released today on Steam for $4.99.

I'll probably get a PS4 a year after release. So I'm looking forward to cheap copies of God of War and Last of Us.

What's gonna be tough for me is waiting so long to play Watch Dogs and the Division on PS4. By the time I get my console and games, no one will be playing those on multiplayer. :(

Man there's so many games from this generation I still want to play that I haven't, I don't know if I'll ever get something from PS4/XB1 generation. Maybe 2-3+ years down the road when they release a new model and drop the price, but then again maybe not.

Xbox Live sales are continuing. Today they have Witcher 2 Enhanced Version for 9.99, downloading it right now. They have Orange Box Half Life 2 for 4.99, already downloaded it. And they have Crysis 3 for 19.99. I hear great things about it and I want to play it but I am being greedy and waiting for perhaps a bigger discount, although 19.99 is a bargain from what I have heard. BTW these are all one day sales.

Well there was more on sale than I thought. I also picked up the original Mass Effect for 4.99, I think most have played that but I haven't. They have original Crysis for 4.99, I am thinking about getting that as well. By the time sales season is done I won't be looking for a new game for a while it looks like. Adding the 250 gig hard drive was definitely a good idea.

Thanks. I'd been looking at getting this anyway, just picked it up.

Grabbed Mass Effect for $5. Having a digital copy is nice especially since my last few playthroughs have had disc read errors at times.

Dark Souls 2 is only coming out on the current generation systems in case that makes a difference.

Picked up the orange box for $5. Don't have my physical copy anymore, so might as well run through the Half Life 2 and eps for the 4th time.

I'm looking forward to it as I never really got all the way through everything. And it's been a long time since I played the parts I did. At this point it will be close to like a first time. Been playing a lot of swords and sorcery lately so between this and Mass Effect I am looking forward to the change.

Game I was really wanting and hoping to get for a good price, thanks for posting!

So my $25 The Show 13 should arrive soon. I've never played any games in the series. Advise?
Batting is either stupid hard or stupid easy. No middle ground. As such, I've gotten most of my enjoyment from the game doing career mode as a pitcher.
Based on who is pitching or your settings?
Haven't player '13 yet but have played '10 and '12 extensively. For batting, you have to be very patient. If you go up swinging at every pitch, you're done. Sit on a pitch and a location (you can guess before each pitch). If you get it, crush it w/ a power swing. If you don't guess right, take the pitch until you're at 2 strikes. I always guess inside fastball to start an AB cause IMO it is the easiest pitch to hit and to hit hard. Once you're down to your last strike, either stop guessing and just use a contact swing or sit on a pitch based on velocity ie if the pitcher throws a 4SF, 2SF, Sinker and Changeup, sit on the changeup. Or if he throws 3 slow pitches and 1 fast one, sit on the fast one.

I always play the Road to the Show mode if that makes a difference. Building your hitter/pitcher is pretty straight forward. For a hitter, ignore everything but contact, power and speed. Stuff like discipline, vision and clutch don't matter unless you're simulating games. Same thing with a pitcher. Ignore K/9, BB/9 and H/9 and just build the pitches and stamina. (Note: can't say if these things changed in '13)

Where did you hear this? Back at E3 they said any game that came out on Games for Windows Live would likely come out for XB1, and Dark Souls 2 is coming out on PC for GFWL.

Been playing Walking Dead that I picked up dirt cheap on a humble indie bundle. Interesting game play. It's literally all about the story.

Right from the wiki.

Dark Souls II (ダークソウルツー Dāku Souru Tsū?) is an upcoming action role-playing open world video game, developed for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 by From Software in Japan. Dark Souls II is the sequel to Dark Souls.

The DLC is pretty good, but it's short. They do a great job with the story telling here. I still think the game is better than the TV show.

Any word on more chapters? If/When are they coming?I still have chapter 5 to play. Each chapter takes ~2 hours to play through. Definitely a game to play two or three times to walk through it differently. I have the disc as I don't have an Internet connection. So, curious if they will have a disc ready at some point.

You played the Back to the Future game as well, right? It came in the same bundle, wondering about those as well.

They mentioned it in that long demo video I posted a few weeks back.

Also their main site lists all the platforms at the bottom of the page and no XB1 or PS4 is mentioned. They also have adds with the three boxes being shown (one for PC, one for XB360 and one for PS3). They are also taking pre orders for the current generation now.

If you're a Back to the Future fan like I am, you'll enjoy that one. This is no LJN game. It's true to the movie. The Jurassic Park game was decent for the story, but the gameplay was really buggy, so I'm not as big of a fan of that one.

"400 Days" is supposed to be a hold over until Season 2, which likely won't be out until 2014.

I recently got a PS3 with CFW on it... been curious about my limitations regarding online activity... mostly updating features of some games (mlb/nfl lineups) more than playing online. I've looked around on more gaming centric forums of the conversations of PSN bans and spoofing and online stuff but can't really get a straight response on my inquires besides a "you risk a banning going on PSN with CFW". Any of you guys know what's up on this scene? Multiman man?

Just started playing Aveyond 2 yesterday. Been on a JRPG whirl for awhile now, and needed to break outside of Final Fantasy.

I'm really liking it so far - the story is OK and the graphics are reminiscent of FF3-6... It can also be pretty tough. I've died countless times and am only 8 hours in. Definitely something folks should check out if your FF fans - $10 download at Gamefly.

Pardon my ignorance, but what are the benefits of jailbreaking a PS3?

ETA: I'd assume you can burn blu ray copies of games. So I guess that's a huge one.

So I finished up the main story line in Fable 3. Kind of weird game. Such a mix of juvenile and adult. And really they seemed to want to play politics but allow for no gray. I mean you lift the drink ban and then pretty much everyone is throwing up in the street drunk 24/7. Anyway due to my wealth I was able to save the kingdom and not be a tyrant. Still a lot I can do there and I'll probably hop back in to knock out some more accomplishments when I have a few here and there but in general I am done with it. Didn't buy the DLCs.

Well as I mentioned been all swords and sorcery lately(couple of months between Skyrim and Fable) so I moved on to Mass Effect. Initially a little frustrating as some things could have stood a better explanation. Played through a bit to get the hang of things and then restarted so I could do it right. Just arrived at Citadel. Had the first meeting with Udine. Off to do some discovery and maybe some odd jobs.

For you veterans should I worry about buying stuff? Some of these games you can find better than anything you can buy, is this one of them or do I need cash? So far it feels a bit like KOTOR and you didn't really need cash there, although if you had it you could get some cool stuff. With all the armor and weapons seems like cash might be good. But I have read people saying convert excess inventory to omni-gel so I'm not sure.

You will pick up a lot of stuff. That's pretty much where I got weapons and armor early on. Some stuff you may need to buy like if you can wear heavy medium or light armor. By mid game, money is pretty much a non factor with you being able to sell everything. Once you start maxing out inventory, converting to omni gel is useful because you use it to unlock doors and repair the mako (ground vehicle when on a planet).

Combat isnt very good compared to modern games but the story is what drives this thing. It will be getting interesting soon.

I have noticed the gun play is kind of clunky. What's with the Parkinson's sniper rifle? I have never used a weapon in a game that was so all over the place. Very hard to get on target, seems to defeat the purpose. Drove the Mako a bit before the restart. The jump feature is different and I thought it was OK to drive, I have heard some folks complain about it.

I have to say it would be nice if they gave you some kind of tutorial on the whole getting around with the ship. I picked a system, I picked a planet, nothing happened. I thought "maybe they are really working this and I have to wait a bit". But no that wasn't it. Until you happen to pick a planet you can land on you don't know you need to be looking for the land option. So that led to some frustration for a bit. But like I said I think I have the controls, the getting around in space and the hacking mini-game down now so I am ready to get into it full swing.

Not all classes can effectively use all weapons in ME1. IIRC only a soldier can use the sniper - any other class that tries won't be able to aim the thing.

Once you start maxing out inventory, converting to omni gel is useful because you use it to unlock doors and repair the mako (ground vehicle when on a planet).Combat isnt very good compared to modern games but the story is what drives this thing. It will be getting interesting soon.
Thanks.

Yeah I am playing Shepard as a soldier this time through seemed to be the most fitting way to go.
