Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (1 Viewer)

On the heels of Irrational Games shutting down, today there were layoffs at Sony Santa Monica (God of War). Pretty shocking to see this happen at two pretty high-profile studios.
I think this kind of goes back to the discussions a few months (during the discussions about cutting out used games) about how viable the current gaming model is long-term. I mean, what does it take for a game company to stay in business anymore? It seems like, unless you are spitting out Call of Duty level popular games or some form of cheap to make shovelware you're on a never ending ledge that you can fall over at any time. Previously it was one bad game, even after a string of great ones, putting companies under. Now even companies that have put out nothing but good games often don't survive. Meanwhile the console manufacturers themselves are losing billions and exploring options to sell off their gaming divisions entirely.

It seems like such a volatile industry, I don't know why anyone goes into it. Either you make a game that "only" sells millions and you go out of business or you make a game that sells 15 bajillion copies and makes ungodly amounts of money that you get screwed out of before being layed off or "restructured" anyway.

I guess House of Cards doesn't move products like they hoped.
maybe they are learning that they can do more with less people, that not all games have a shot at being AAA, and that a good game will beat a pretty game any day of the week.

Dragons Dogma isn't easy....

I think I need to backtrack a little. I keep trying different areas and I manage to kill about 8/10 of a difficult mob and inevitable something crazy happens and I get killed. So close so many times.

Catching that thief was really annoying.

The map/quest markets are a mess.

I'm soooooooo not used to saving. Now I know what you mean, TxBuckeye!

The boss fights are incredible and epically huge. I though Dark Souks had some cool bosses , DD gives them a run for the money.

I could see the dungeons becoming annoying to navigate but we shall see....

Early grade is a 7.5/10 - the game has some personality and the boss fights really take the cake but the enemy pop up and inconsistent difficulty lower the score slight. I will revisit this score later as long as this thing hold my attention.

1) do not take any "escort" quests unless you have already been to the place. Most times the escort quests force you into areas you don't belong yet

2) the theif quest was arguably the worst in the game. Don't be discouraged by it, it was awful

3) are you talking about the quest markers? If so, most times they are very accurate. You just need to get used to the shading. The shading tells you if you are on the correct floor or not. If the marker is a dark shade of red you are on the right floor, anything else you are not

4) save, save, save

5) I can't emphasize how good the bosses and creatures are at Bitterblack Island. They blow most of the regular game away, at least until you get to post game where the bosses in Everfall are fabulous

6) 7.5 is right about what I would rate it as well.

we're partially to blame for this. We need to put a bigger $$ value on video gaming.

We'll pay $30 for a boardgame that costs next to nothing to make, but not $60 on a game that took millions. But I do understand that "cost to produce" is irrelevant to the consumer.

Part of the blame has to be on the companies, too. $60 is a lot for much of their target audience (teens / kids / parents).

I would like to see them eliminate used games (because that's going to happen anyway), but bring prices down 20% (or whatever number makes sense). Win/win.

I played this a few months ago. It was one of those games I put about 10-15 hours into, then stopped for whatever reason, and traded it in. I can't remember exactly why (maybe something else came out that I was eyeing?) I do recall the pawns thing bugged me a bit, as even your one created pawn had little personality/story. They also seemed creepy (think about what a life that must be). I also could have been burned out on RPG's, as I had put eons into Skyrim, and played Two Worlds 2 before it as well.

You two talking about it has piqued my interest, though. I may buy this again w/ add-ons and give it a shot.

The pawns are a bit strange but they are easier to manage than the Dragons Age group. Plus you don't have to play with any pawns if you don't want to. You can run the whole game solo.

The Dar Arisen game is said to be significantly better than the original release which supposedly had some bugs in it.

Still Dogma is no Skyrim. But if you found Two World II fun, you will like this.

How practical is this? Would you run in to a lot of problematic encumberance issues and whatnot if you don't take at least one along? The game with the new expansion definitely piqued my interest.

The only simple way to run solo is to build a big fat male character from the beginning so you can carry stuff. My daughter made my character a tiny waif of a girl so I need the pawns.

If you choose to solo, you should consider the Assassin vocation as they have an augment that makes you stronger if solo.

Personally I would always keep one pawn, make it a mage that just heals you. You can still use as a pack mule but it won't get in the way much.

The new Diablo 3 patch finally makes Diablo 3 fun.
Are you referring to a patch for the PC game or an additional patch to the already fixed console game that came out a while ago? The console game was fantastic. Never played the PC version due to all the issues.
PC version. It's the famed "Loot 2.0" patch and it delivers big time.
if it is like the fixes to the console game, you are going to love it (assuming you enjoy the basics of a Diablo style game).

The console game itself is going to re-released later this year and will probably pick up what ever additions were made to the PC game beyond the console's original changes.

I think the new Diablo 3 patch tips the scales in favor of D3 when comparing to PoE.
Please explain
The skill tree in PoE is the main selling point of the game over D3. The combat in D3 has always been way more interesting and better polished. D3's problems lied in its horrible loot combined with the AH and now both of those two things are fixed. PoE still has the edge on build development, but its no longer enough to sell it over D3.

I loathed D3 and love PoE. Isn't the point of these games loot and character builds? So if D3 still has the horrible character progression then I have no idea how its even on par with PoE let alone better.

D3s combat is leagues better and now its loot is on par with PoE. Before, PoE's skill tree was enough to make it the better choice. Now, not so much. Also, while PoE's skill tree is very deep and engaging, it leaves little to no room for error. There's something to be said about D3's more flexible system.

Bottom line for me was that the loot in old D3 was the main reason it wasn't fun. Now that is fixed.

Obviously its all due to personal taste. Others may disagree.

Dragons Dogma isn't easy....

I think I need to backtrack a little. I keep trying different areas and I manage to kill about 8/10 of a difficult mob and inevitable something crazy happens and I get killed. So close so many times.

The light always going out is a pain in the butt, especially on Bitterblack island where it is dark 100% of the time.

I'm approach Level 15 in Chivalry at which point I get kicked off the newbie servers. I'm a bit worried about that. I'm doing well but know that I've got zero skills compared to the people who really play the game.

is Bitterblack in the expansion? As long as they don't have the archers that shoot the arrow storm. I play a mage, and those guys suck.

Yes Bitterblack is the expansion in Dark Arisen. It is a 29 level dungeon, 3 separate bosses and loaded with creatures harder than any in the regular game pre dragon. It contains a ton of new gear and new ways to enhance your gear much more than the regular game along with adding in new secret augments that can build your character differently.

The dungeon is hard the first time through, but gets kicked up a significant notch once you beat it once. I am level 114 and struggling on my second play through. Took me roughly 20 hours the first time through.

Best way to describe it is if you remember the basic trolls in the regular game that were cannon fodder?

Chimera level creatures are the trolls in Dark Arisen second play through

It is pretty fun if you enjoy combat and no real story.

It is further complicated by the fact that your stats grow slower after level 100 each time you level up.

I can pick up a copy of Cruasder Kings II for about $17 via Amazon. Given I've liked Europa Universalis titles in the past (haven't got the new one), should I pull the trigger?

BTW is locking up a feature of Fallout 3 on Xbox? I am feeling more confident with the game and decided to start wondering the Wasteland a bit. Killed some guys, got some cool loot. Was just walking along and the game froze solid. Nothing I could do but turn it off. This isn't the first time either. Usually not a problem with older games as they are usually patched up the wazoo.

This was a constant problem in the original Fallout 3 on both xbox and ps3. It was improved on the game of the year edition but still froze from time to time.

Just save a lot.

i have that from time to time with both Fallout titles and Skyrim. So i try to remember to save.

The only time I had freezes in Skyrim was going through doors. Which really sucked. But one of the patches seems to have cleaned that up for me.

I never played the other one but Crusader Kings II is pretty good.
I pulled the trigger. Did you pick up any downloadable content? I'm thinking of getting The Old Gods add on - always fun to go a Viking.

I haven't yet. I have just been slowly working the main game. Trying to get my head around all the little rules of succession and stuff like that, A very different genre for me. I usually play FPS and large world RPG games.

I have all the DLCs except sons of abraham. The must get DLCs are Old Gods and the Rome on as it adds retinues (standing armies). I have 700 hours in CK2. Get Sword of Islam if you want to play a muslim character and the Republics if you would like to play as a republic.

I have all the DLCs except sons of abraham. The must get DLCs are Old Gods and the Rome on as it adds retinues (standing armies). I have 700 hours in CK2. Get Sword of Islam if you want to play a muslim character and the Republics if you would like to play as a republic.
Is it worth playing the base game first for a while as a newbie?

BTW is locking up a feature of Fallout 3 on Xbox? I am feeling more confident with the game and decided to start wondering the Wasteland a bit. Killed some guys, got some cool loot. Was just walking along and the game froze solid. Nothing I could do but turn it off. This isn't the first time either. Usually not a problem with older games as they are usually patched up the wazoo.
First time playing a Bethesda game?
No but as I mentioned usually by the time I get older games most of that stuff is no problem due to all the patching.

Just finished up Saints Row III - really liked it. Got a little repetitive near the end, but I really liked how there was always something to do with minimal travel filler and very short cutscenes.

Now starting Sleeping Dogs. (PS3)

this happened a lot to me on PS3 with the GOTY version. for some reason, 90% of the time I killed a GD giant scorpion, the game froze up on me. stupid scorpions. and there is one big battle later in the game that was almost unplayable. even still, I love the game.

Have killed a few scorpions without that problem thankfully.
