Vikings RB depth chart (1 Viewer)

So I'm looking at the RB situtation in Minnesota, and notice Mewelde is now #5 on the depth chart :o . Last I heard he was #3 behind Fason and had some knee injury. Now they have this kid Wendell Mathis from Fresno State as the #3. I search his name and no discussion in the Shark Pool. I did see his name mentioned on the blogger in a August 29th article that gave a pretty favorable impression. Never heard of this guy. Any insight from Viking homers, or anyone else following this?

Edited to add I looked at Bob Henry's depth chart and he still has MM as the #3 man behind Taylor and Fason. Any explanation for the Vikings site having him as #5, and I would appreciate any insight on Mathis if you know.

My best guess is they have him 5th because he's not on the field practicing nor is he playing in any games. From a competition standpoint, he's not out there.

Going on talent alone - he's easily 3rd, if not 2nd...

Mathis has played well in the preseason and there's a reasonably good chance he'll make the team, but I don't think you'll get the answer you're looking for until Mewelde is healthy, practicing and even playing in games. If the later happens, then we know he's not 5th and I'm highly suspicious of that 5th myself - FWIW.

FYI Mewelde was back at practice on Monday, supposedly looked ok. Is a GTD for the final preseason game.

Mewelde has always and only just looked OK. Plus he's always aching. Even if he gets two, I wouldnt count on him actually getting the carries for the year if somthing were to happen to Taylor. IMO Moore just doesnt have the stuff.

The questions surrounding Moore have always been about durability not ability. You are fooling yourself if you think that Moore can’t get it done.

During the run up to the draft, I brought up Mathis a few times. He left UCLA for Fresno because he knew Drew would be the man there. At Fresno he had Bryson Sumlin (a nice college back just cut by SD) in front of him. They shared as juniors and put up similar numbers, but Mathis took over last year. I brought him up a few times, not because I saw nice NFL future, but because he was being listed as 5-8 and 185 all over the internet. It was a mistake on his bio at FSU's homepage, and "so called" experts *cough scottwrightmelkiper cough* were saying things like, "he's so small, he'll never make it." Arg, he was 5-11 and 210+ last season. His best game was a subplot to the Reggie Bush show against USC. Mathis scored after Bush's fumble on a kick return. He also had a drive where he just dominated SC's defense. He is a downhill runner, cut and go, and that seems to be the recipe in the NFL these days. He looked pretty good running through some arm tackles late in a preseason game, but I'm real skeptical. I would be happy for him if he sticks though.

Probably. But, you are fooling yourself even more if you think Moore can stay healthy.

Moore's best contribution to this team will be his punt returning abilities. He will likely end up being 3rd in the line of actually getting carries. The team seems to be pretty happy with Fason so far and he should be the guy to spell CT. Mathis only makes the team to play special teams or in case options 1-3 get banged up.

Thanks CC. Good stuff.

It really should come as no surprise to see Moore displace Fason as the #2 now that he is healthy again. I know he gets hurt a lot, but when he's on the field, he puts up 100 yards. It's just what he does.
