Vince Young's Quick Progress and Leadership (1 Viewer)

Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher was simultaneously vague and specific earlier in the week when asked about rookie first-round draft choice Vince Young.

Fisher made it clear that Young will see the field this season, but he refused to provide details as to when or where that will happen.

Some Titans players and coaches recently said Young is more likely to begin playing sooner than later. They said the former University of Texas star, who was the first quarterback and the third player taken in April's draft, has impressed them with how quickly he has grasped the offense and its terminology, and with how he was unwilling to concede the starting job even when Steve McNair still was on the roster.

One Titans coach privately said Young is driven to prove wrong critics who questioned his football intellect and game. The coach said Young has been spending extra hours in his playbook, preparing each day as if he'll get the call on opening day. There is a purpose to his stride, a seriousness in his tone.

Understandly, the Titans don't want to rush Young for fear of breaking his confidence or his spirit should he struggle early. But those close to Young contend that won't happen. He is not Ryan Leaf, a guy who's going to quit at the first sign of adversity. Study his background and you'll soon find someone who feeds off challenges, be it life or athletics.

The initial feeling was that the Titans would use the same blueprint for Young that they used for McNair, the contention being their games and athletic backgrounds are almost interchangeable. Not so. McNair was reared on the small-college level at Alcorn State, where he was primarily a pocket passer. Young grew up on the highest collegiate level possible, as a multidimensional threat who could beat you with his legs or his right arm – even with his unorthodox release.

Unless Young appears to be in a permanent free-fall, the Titans should do with him as the Colts did with Peyton Manning, as the Cowboys did with Troy Aikman: Let him play early and often. Manning took every snap for the Colts his first year and set a league record for interceptions thrown by a rookie; now he's generally considered the game's pre-eminent quarterback. Aikman lost all 11 of his starts as a rookie and threw twice as many interceptions as touchdowns; later this summer he'll be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Whether Young will reach such heights is unknown, but hopefully the Titans won't wait long before allowing him to take flight.

The new "Honda" and "____ down". And worse than both.Vince Young will be a stud. Maybe not this year. But by year 3 certainly.
I agree. Of course I'm partial to VY since I drafted him. But with as much potential as he has I had to pull the trigger. I'm happy to see that it seems like he's doing all the right things and he's progressing well. I do however hope they bring him along slowly. Stick him in there for a series here and there throughout the season to get his feet wet...just not long enough to lose it. He seems like a good kid with his head on straight. I wish him luck.

I think he's mentally strong enough that even if he did get kicked around a bit this year, it wouldn't destroy him for his career.

Here are a couple more good Vince articles for those interested.

But really and truly, it's best to see things with your own two eyes in a real-life setting.

And that's why I can unequivocally say without any hesitation or doubt in my mind that Vince Young is going to be the superstar many think he's going to be.

Sports writers here at The Leaf-Chronicle are blessed with the opportunity to go to Titans' practices and games.

I went Tuesday for the team's Organized Team Activity for two reasons: The first was to do a question-and-answer session with head coach Jeff Fisher that will be in Sunday's sports section about the team coming to Clarksville and Austin Peay for training camp.

But the second reason was to watch Vince Young.

And I don't mean just simply looking and gawking at him at practice. I mean really, really taking a look a guy who was the third pick in the draft and someone the Titans hope will lead them to the Super Bowl.

The cool thing was Vince didn't wait for me to see him, and actually made me take notice with three plays.

The first was a scramble on a broken play that should have gone for a loss, but Vince turned it into at least a 10-yard gain.

The second was a similar scramble right up the middle for about 5 yards.

The third, fourth and fifth (and sixth, seventh and eighth) was every pass he completed with that unorthodox throwing style that's supposed to limit him in the NFL.

Well, let me tell you, the worries many had about Vince and his ability as a passer, leader, runner and ultimately as a quarterback are unfounded.

Titans fans, be very, very happy. Because if the glimpse I saw of Young is any indication, you folks will be in awe for years and years to come.

And just in case you're not sure what I'm getting at, here's the bottom line: Vince Young WILL BE THE MAN.

Every day, rookie quarterback Vince Young looks a little bit better.

He looks more comfortable in practices, and his teammates sure seem to like him.

Coaches have been raving about Young’s progress in recent weeks, and his willingness to learn as much as he can as fast as he can.

He’s been hanging around the office of offensive coordinator Norm Chow a lot, and throwing with receivers on the field after practices.

" am more relaxed, just being around the guys helps me," Young said. "Just laughing, joking, cracking jokes. Talking back to the defensive when they say something. It’s fun."

For now, Billy Volek is the starting quarterback. But the more they see Young, the Titans might have a harder time sitting him.

Cutler has turned into a recluse and holed himself up in a secluded cabin in the Colorado mountains and is concentrating on growing his grizzly Adams beard ala Jake the Snake. :pics:

I am extremly happy to hear this. I knew he was a class act, and would adapt to the NFL easily. I know everyone looks good right now, but we've actually seen tape of Vince on ESPN, and it has been inpressive, to say the least. It will be an interesting year for Tennessee

You ask and you shall receive. Everyone is an All-Pro in June (except ARogers)...-- Cutler Impresses --

Sat Jun 17, 2006

TSN reports Denver Broncos first round draft pick QB Jay Cutler impressed the team with his arm strength during May and June camps. He made all the throws with velocity, which prompted S Nick Ferguson to even invoke the name of QB John Elway because of that quality alone. Cutler also was a quick study in absorbing the playbook. While Cutler had a penchant for throwing off his back foot in college, there's been no rush to change his mechanics for fear of messing with what made him a first-round pick. The Broncos believe a suspect offensive line had more to do with Cutler's happy feet and that working behind Denver's veteran line will help settle him down.
