Vincent Brown (1 Viewer)

Vincent Brown is likely the most pro-ready WR entering the league as a rookie this season and from the way Philip Rivers is talking he's expecting him to contribute this season. With Floyd likely moving on from San Diego, can Brown be an unlikely fantasy sleeper?

What's his upside this season? WR#3 if he starts?

At best he'd be a third option in the passing game behind Gates and Jackson and SD also has guys like Patrick Crayton and Seyi Arojotito in the mix who both had some success last season. I'm not syaing he isn't worth a later round flier - but it's hard to see a huge rookie year from him.

I dont see a signafacent role in fantasy and is at best the 3rd option in SD. I still think Floyd will stay and Aijirututo, Crayton, and Davis will be competition if Floyd leaves for that #2 wide out for the explosive San Diego offesnse

If Floyd moves on and SD doesn't bring in a guy like Steve Smith, then I like V. Brown as a bit of a sleeper. Like you detailed in the OP, he seems to be a bit more pro-ready than most WRs in this rookie class. He might not have the upside as some of the top few WRs in this class, but I think his floor is higher than most (long-term) and his situation could be more favorable.

If he starts, I think he could be a FF WR3/WR4 type. It's a big if though. I don't like him a ton for redraft leagues right now (as a few things have to break just right for him to produce as a rookie), but his dynasty value is solid.

I love Vincent Brown, but realize in a best case scenario he's the third or fourth option in the passing game.

He has the best hands in this draft class of guys not named A.J. Green (it's close) and should become a trusted target of Philip Rivers very soon. I like him as a slot guy this year with upside to move into the starting lineup.

Brown impressed me on film, and in person at the Senior Bowl with his quickness, route running ability, and (of course) his hands. The guy can get open easily against one on one coverage and gains separation easily. Very rarely do we see a rookie WR who is so adept at running routes.

Fantasy value is low this year - WR5/WR6 most likely, but I love his upside in dynasty leagues.

As others have noted, Naanee will be gone. No one has mentioned Buster Davis; I suspect he'll be gone or a non-factor.

Assuming both are gone/non-factors, this year Brown stands to be behind Jackson, Floyd, Ajirotutu, and Crayton on the depth chart at WR. And behind Gates and the RBs in terms of targets. The only way I could see him having fantasy value is if both Jackson and Floyd go to other teams.

Long term I would expect him to have the potential to be a starter for San Diego, but in a #2, possession role. He does not have the speed or size San Diego prefers in its #1 WRs. While Gates will eventually decline, it is also true that Norv's offenses have traditionally not produced much fantasy value in its #2 WRs. There have been exceptions, and it's also true that Rivers is better than the other QBs Norv had previously, but I suspect Brown's long term fantasy potential is limited to a top 40ish WR.

Sounds like Floyd will not be re-signed by the Bolts according to several news sources- this is definitely an interesting development.
They might not sign VJax, Floyd OR Nannee.....will be interesting to see who they get. Even behind Gates it would be nice to have a WR1 fall into your lap. Crayton have any value in dynasties?

Here's my reading of the tea leaves:

782 - Gates

717 - Floyd - gone

520 - Sproles - gone

514 - Crayton

371 - Naanee - gone

262 - Ajirotutu

259 - Buster Davis - gone

248 - VJ

Steve Smith (Carolina) - not coming

with all those subtractions and no additions, Brown will be given every opportunity to make significant contributions and eventually take over Floyd's spot. Obviously VJ and Gates remain the top targets, but Ajirotutu is no threat to Brown.

On the other hand, Rivers spreads the ball so much that SD isn't great for producing fantasy-relevant WRs. Last year Rivers threw for 4710 yards and their leading receiver only had 782 and was actually a TE

They had loads of injuries at WR so that may just be a reason that SD didn't have a 1,000 yd WR.

Wasn't Brian Robiskie the most NFL ready rookie WR a couple of years ago?
People were saying that, but often with a weird qualifier - that Robiskie had no upside (which. IMO, made little sense for someone who hadn't played a down in the NFL, but there obviously was some truth to it). For what it's worth, the same limitations are not being given to Brown and some of the staff here are high on him (Andrew Garda has him at #8 overall in the rookie rankings).

An article from the SD Union Tribune over the weekend mentioned Brown is currently #3 on the WR depth chart behind Jackson and Crayton. The article was focusing on how the Chargers will be looking closely at LB and WR that get released over the next week or so, so that could change. For those interested, Kelly Washington was listed as 4 and Ajirotutu as 5 in the pecking order.

I didn't realize Washington was still on the team. Did they resign him?I'm surprised Ajiortutu is below Washington on the depth chart. Any word on why that is?

Washington's listed on their active roster. Looks like he signed for 1yr on July 28. No clue why they put Washington ahead of Ajirotutu. I'd imagine things will be pretty fluid behind Jackson and Crayton until someone stands out, with Brown the favorite for #3 heading into camp.
